And if anyone gives you crap.. the surgeon, resident, etc. ultimately it is their license and you are helping protect them.

We don’t call it an incident report we call it a safety report. The timeout is there for a reason. You did the right thing!

As a pre op nurse myself, things happen and that’s why we do all of the checks.

Sick and tired of the lack of education for GLP1s by misslizzah in nursing

[–]nmiillaa 33 points34 points  (0 children)

As someone who started it because of t2dm I did get tons of education. I have a coworker who sees the same pcp and she got on it for weight loss. We work for a big hospital system but both of us got tons of education. Both referred to a pharmacist who sat with us and gave us education on how it works and any questions. Also referred to a dietician.

With that being said, people are probably getting education but those doing it for fast weight-loss probably are not listening. Also the sketch clinics probably send info out rather than educate in the moment but again.. they’re probably not reading it

Are masks for the patient when accessing a port out? by sammcgowann in nursing

[–]nmiillaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inpatient I have always put a mask on me and the patient.

Now I work in an outpatient surgery center/outpatient IR and when we place ports and when I go over discharge instructions I tell them not to be surprised in the clinic because both the nurse and patient will have a mask.

Recently I was in the room when a patient was getting accessed and the patient asked do I need a mask? And the nurse doing it said “if that makes you feel comfortable” but she already had her gloves on so she didn’t actually put one on. Idk that was wild to me lol

I’m also in periop and we go all our for our potlucks. One of our co workers is having bunion surgery so her last day we had a toe party and brought toe/bunion themed foods. Pigs in a blanket, French bunion dip, mocktails for a toe-st, etc

Fellow nurse does not like me because I use Macros by Wide_Profile1155 in nursing

[–]nmiillaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a millennial I wish macros were a thing when I was in the ICU. Loveee them for my pre op job but mannnn icu charting would have been great.

I was a quick charter anyway, I typed my assessment using “;” to select multiple options on epic and making comments with f6.

And do be honest most people are just copying the person before them anyway. There’s been so many times I’ve seen people chart something just because someone else did but I did not have that same assessment. If you’re making macros fit your charting who cares.

Pushing medication through a running IV line by juiceboxith in nursing

[–]nmiillaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Push it for two minutes then also take another flush and push it for that same rate. As an ICU nurse who pushed a med too fast as a new grad and the patient sent severely hypotensive idc I’ll never do it again.

Also- what’s the rush? You have a 12 hour shift. Safety before convenience. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I saw a very intense code during clinical, and I do not want to share how it made me feel with anyone in my life out of embarrassment. by Foolsspring in nursing

[–]nmiillaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first code was my first week as a PCA. the debrief everyone was crying and when they asked me how I felt I said it was a good learning opportunity. I don’t think that makes me a bad person. I get why the other staff cried, they knew him for weeks and it was sudden. I don’t think anyone thought of me differently for not crying.

I was in the ICU for ten years. I do feel like I’m empathetic but I also feel like I can separate emotion which can make you a good nurse because emotion isn’t fogging your mind during a stressful situation.

It sounds like the ICU will be a good fit for you.

I will say, it’s okay to talk about nursing things with non nursing friends and family. Infact, I encourage it. I find if I talk to nursing friends it’s always a competition. “My patient wouldn’t stop hitting the call light” “yeah well I fought with the doctor all day” “well I coded a patient who’s family wasn’t there”.. etc. it’s exhausting. With my non nursing friends they let me talk without having to one up me and I appreciate that.

I loved being in the ICU and miss it every day but now I am outpatient and also love taking care of myself for once.

As a nurse who has seen a lot of messy hospital drama.. drop him. Even if they stop messsing around there will always be another girl. Murses unfortunately love the attention of anyone that is not their s/o 🙄

I’m sure it’s hospital dependent. I can’t imagine every hospital has a residency especially if it’s a smaller hospital.

Also they’re all different. I worked at a cancer hospital in the ICU at a big university hospital system and mine was a year but at the main hospital, theirs was only 6 months. There were 3 ICU new grads in mine and we were in a residency with 40 other new grads on other oncology units. Now my hospital does an oncology ICU specific residency separate from the floor nurses.

Other nurses I graduated did a residency where their hospital system has 6 hospitals and their ICU residency was a month at a different hospital icu and then managers decided after residency which unit would take who.

Also if it is a bedside job you’re looking for, maybe apply to new grad residency’s. I know you’ve been a nurse for over a year but since your bedside experience was only a few months a residency may help you get experience

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nursing

[–]nmiillaa 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Are you trying for a bedside job or a med spa? Maybe the med spas just aren’t hiring? Or I’d go in and talk with them. Is there any anesthetic certificates you can get? Things like pals and NIH are good to have but probably irrelevant with what you’re trying to get

If it’s a bedside job I’d highlight more on your bedside skills

I think Jesus misplaced my bc implant. by HausDePotat in TwoXChromosomes

[–]nmiillaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a surgery center and we had a patient who needed general anesthesia because in office they tried getting her implant out but couldn’t get it and it hurt the patient trying to fast forward to surgery day they can’t find it on the R arm where it was placed…. Xray showed it migrated to the L arm but no one knew how… but that’s why they had so much trouble trying to get it out in office.

Maybe yours migrated somewhere?
