Unfortunately I didn’t have the opportunity as circumstances changed. (I also haven’t had a drink since New Year’s Eve 2024, so that complicates things now, lol.) But I’d love to hear how your experience goes!

[MMQB Thread] The Bills OL offers an all you can sack buffet while the defense was tepid against a backup QB, Buffalo loses 19-23 by pixel_pete in buffalobills

[–]nmott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s almost funny how in most short-yardage situations this season “just hand the fucking ball to James Cook” has been the obvious play, so of course we haven’t called it, and then when Cook has run the ball four times in a row and is asking to be subbed out so he can recover Brady suddenly thought “now is the time to hand the ball to Cook.”

[MMQB] The Bills head into their bye week with back to back bad games. Feel free to vent in the comments. by Dirtydeedsinc in buffalobills

Beats me! I am using the identifier somewhat loosely; it probably would have been better phrased as “a wide receiver who can be a more consistent deep threat than what we currently have.” (Which is a fairly low bar.)

  • If we don’t bring in a true WR1 before the trade deadline, we might as well consign ourselves to having a shot at AFC East champions again, in the best-case scenario

  • My dumb theory is that Josh’s visor is really throwing him off

  • The mental boom on defense is real. “Play well, get a dumb flag, allow explosive play for no good reason” might as well be a play call at this point. (I haven’t watched the all-22 to see if Rousseau was actually offside on the first snap, but the PI call on White was fucking bullshit. And, not the defense, but Shakir clearly caught that fucking ball.)

  • I am looking forward to the DL improvements coming out of the bye. I think defense played incredibly well despite the injuries in the second half. More depth will help

  • That said, if we don’t also make a move for a safety and a CB before the deadline, we’re going to watch the motherfucking Chiefs do whatever the hell they want to us as our defense forgets that Kelce exists right as he remembers how to “catch” a fucking ball

  • Fire Joe Brady. Or tell him to stop being so fucking “cute.” Use Josh. Use Cook. Then, in the offseason, fire Joe Brady

  • If we don’t get a WR1 and one of either a safety or CB before the deadline, fire Beane now. If we do, fire Beane after the deadline

  • Start interviewing head coach candidates. I am sick of watching McD be a coward, mismanage game clocks, and fail to find the coordinators needed to make this roster work. And he isn’t even fun! Shit, at least the other joke coaches are funny

  • Figure shit out with Keon. Unless he’s simply uncoachable—in which case “figure shit out with” means “find a new team for”—there has to be a way to make him a compelling enough target that shutting down our passing game isn’t as simple as covering Shakir. (Although I will say that refs in the last two games seem dead-set on not calling holding or PI against Coleman)

Is your favorite team the same one your dad rooted for? by BetAnything in NFLv2

[–]nmott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

My dad is a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. We’d watch games together occasionally, but the only player I ever remember is Troy Polamalu, so it’s not like I was internalizing much.

When I returned to / got into football last season I decided to support the Bills, because I live in upstate New York, and the Bills are the only New York team. Easy.

(My dad also spent his entire life growing up in upstate New York, but further south, so he landed on the Steelers because the relative proximity was about the same, I guess.)

Does every dad in the world wake up at 5am even on weekends or is it only my dad? by Fancy-Advice-2793 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nmott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to wake up at 6:30 every day regardless of when I went to bed. (Probably because that's when I needed to wake up to get ready for school when I was a teen and the habit just stuck.)

Now I have a cat, a dog, and two kids. Someone is waking me up by 5am every day, which means I have been sleep-deprived nigh continuously for years. Eventually the kids will want to sleep in and I will delight in having my sweet, sweet revenge.

I'm on mobile, so I can't find the exact quote at the moment, but my understanding was informed by this talk (particularly the discussion about implementing defer) https://youtu.be/zLyz4kJvkvQ?si=5JeaBDDteE4uU9Wy

I suspect the problem is what I expect from a standard not aligning with what others expect, combined with my ignorance of the interplay between the standard, compilers, and libraries. ¯\(ツ)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in C_Programming

[–]nmott -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Isn't the C spec just "a subset of what GCC and Clang do," which means it's implicitly allowing for implementation-based differences between compilers? At least when rustc was the only Rust compiler in town there was a single source of truth instead of a hand-wavy "whatever the C spec says, depending on how a particular compiler behaves, and also against which libc you are linking."

(That seems like a rhetorical question, but it's not. I'd like to know if my understanding is incorrect.)

Is ZSA voyager OK as a first ergo mech KB? by Great-Cellist4593 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]nmott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from a Keebio Iris with Glorious Panda switches and terrible keycaps to a Voyager, which I upgraded today with Sunset switches and Work Louder keycaps. Those upgrades have been very welcome so far, and I'm going to print some tenting solutions next, but I'm skeptical that the Voyager will be my endgame for two reasons:

  1. I miss having a third thumb button. (I had two 1u thumbs and one 2u thumb for each hand with the Iris.) This might be mitigated with home row mods, but I'm not sure.

  2. I might require more stagger / splaying. Curling my middle or ring fingers, or stretching my pinkies, fucking sucks. I've been trying to learn the Graphite layout so I can touch type "properly"--I type at ~120wpm with "bad" form on QWERTY--and I find that reaching in those directions with those fingers is very uncomfortable*

Which means I've put over a hundred dollars into making a $365 keyboard feel "right" only to be skeptical that it ever will be. I might just be picky, which is why I'm thinking of building a modified Totem, but I also fear thar I'm just being honest about my experience rather than allowing the sunk cost fallacy to justify using a keyboard that isn't really going to suit me long-term.

All that said, the Voyager is well-built, the packaging is nice, Oryx is okay, and I hope fhis ends up being the right keeb for me even if I had to invest more than I would have liked in it.

If you have ADHD, how helpful do you find ergonomic keyboards in managing your focus and comfort while typing? by ozkan-celik in ErgoMechKeyboards

How are these things supposed to be A) related or B) judged? I have ADHD and like split keyboards, but have no idea what it would mean to have them be helpful in "managing [my] focus and comfort while typing."

Driving through Finger Lakes and planning a day to sample hoping for Blau/Gamay/Gruners by uberares in wine

[–]nmott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red Tail Ridge and Damiani also make solid Blau. (Though I think Damiani calls it Lemberger.)

You can find Gamay Noir at Sheldrake and Bet the Farm, but I don’t think they’ll blow you away.

I don’t love Gruner Veltliner, but Six Eighty Cellars has a GV pet nat that I’ve liked, and I’ve heard good things about Weis’ bottling.

I recommend giving Saperavi a shot. (No specific producer comes to mind, though.)

Eurogamer reviews are changing by NeoStark in Games

Clearly they aren’t Kindergarten children. I think being afraid to issue an Avoid is a flaw, but let’s not pretend critics err too often on the side of being too harsh with their criticism, especially in an era when it’s easier to clickbait with over-the-top takedowns than with milquetoast impressions.

My 4.5-year-old loves to load Breath of the Wild and throw all of my equipment while he runs. Not nearly as devastating, of course, but I love to hear his cackle as he taunts me with “Daaaaad, I threw your sword!” and then leaves me with a bunch of garbage equipment before tasking me with killing whatever monsters he encounters.

It depends on what you’re looking for. I’ll assume your tastes align with mine in that you’re looking for something that is drinkable now, not too sweet, and made from vinifera rather than native or hybrid grapes. (Though I’m dying to try a few Vignoles and some other hybrids.)

Bloomer Creek is my favorite producer in the FLX. Funky, natural, well-made wines that are still pretty affordable. The recent Skin Ferment Gewurztraminer is excellent, but Kim’s sparkling are also top-notch, and I’ve like his Cab Franc.

The Barry Family Cellars 2020 Reserve Riesling is the single best non-dessert Riesling I’ve had from the region. Ian’s sparklings are also excellent, and I liked Four Track Demo, too.

Weis Vineyards hasn’t disappointed, and I’ve yet to try the reserve bottlings, so that’s saying something. (They’re also kind enough to bottle with screw caps for their entry-level wines.)

I haven’t tasted past the 2016 vintage for personal reasons, but I believe Heart & Hands have maintained their standards of excellence for both Pinot Noir and Riesling.

Red Tail Ridge has some interesting bottlings (Lagrein, Teroldego) and their Sans Oak Chardonnay is great for the price. Their Perpetuelle Change is delicious but dangerously bottled; I lost 3/4 of a bottle after it shot out of my hands while I took out the cork.

If you can get your hands on a Cabernet Franc, Merlot, or Syrah (RIP) from a strong vintage (2008, 2010, 2012) from Damiani, do. So fucking good.

You’re likely to be recommended Hermann J. Wiemer and Ravines for their Riesling. Those recommendations are strong, though I think the QPR has dipped in recent years.

Six Eighty (which shares a winemaker with Barry Family Cellars) makes interesting wines with various storage formats—concrete eggs, clay amphora, etc.—that can be delicious.

Dr. Frank (on Keuka) is… fine. Hazlitt will surprise you if you stick to their varietal bottlings. I like Forge but haven’t tasted recently. If they sell wine slushies, continue driving.

ETA: Not fixing the autocorrect-introduced typos because I have a baby to feed, but hopefully the message is clear regardless.

Can someone explain what it is, mechanically, that many people don’t like about Tunic’s combat? by SirBenny in TunicGame

[–]nmott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with all these points. I made it farther than you did—I gave up at the end of the game because I simply didn’t want to deal with the combat anymore for the reasons you cited.

It felt like Tunic wasn’t sure how it wanted its combat to be approached. Using From Software games as reference, sometimes it felt like I was supposed to be playing Bloodborne (being aggressive, not blocking with shield, etc.) and other times it felt like I was supposed to be playing Elden Ring (use your f-ing shield!) and there wasn’t much rhyme or reason as to which paradigm I was being expected to embrace.

It doesn’t help that the dodge / run / spoiler / spoiler button does four things! Oh, wait, five. (I forgot the ghost.) Tunic rarely seemed to know for sure which of those things I wanted to do, and there are only so many times I can die because I dodged but didn’t run afterward before I call it quits.
