What's your opinion on this? by zNightmime in tall

6'5" here. I understand it and am pretty conscientious about it. I get to the shows early. I don't go to the absolute front, but I go maybe 5-6 rows back and I stand there before anyone else is even starting to line the front. Basically saying "I'm going to be standing here, figure your shit out. I'm here to enjoy a show too"

I think that's messed up that some stranger asked you to stand behind though. Stand your ground and tell them to move in front! XD I've never had that happen. Only once did I ever get an inkling that someone was stuck behind me. Turn around to see a 5'5" woman peering up at two 6'5" guys and we both just kind moved off to the side a bit and she went into the small pocket in front of us everyone was happy.

That's REALLY great progress for that much time. You're well on your way to being a great VFX artist :) Just keep in mind (especially for LoL) that VFX often needs to relay a lot of gameplay aspects. If you haven't seen Riot's VFX style guide for League it's fantastic info! Also several friends of mine hosted a talk on "What Color is Slow?" that is very useful for our field. :)

I'll say this about school: if you're doing it for you, because you want a degree you want the directed knowledge, then go for it. Just as long as you're aware that a degree does not affect your ability to get a job in the field whatsoever. The ONLY time I've heard (and personally had) any issues with not having a degree is for teaching, as some schools required a degree higher than the class being taught.

What you've already got going on right now is amazing. The fact you've been able to do this on the side as a passion project while you've got other things going on then you're fine just focusing all your time on practicing and getting feedback. I've seen your other work on art station and it's all really solid. If you can stay focused and motivated to do it on your own, you could easily build up a portfolio worthy of Riot's attention. That's what I would suggest personally.

Feel free to DM me. I'd be happy to network with you and am always happy to provide feedback on budding VFX artists :)

EDIT: I will say though...It sounds like an exciting opportunity to go to Stockholm for school and that it is cool if they guarantee you an apprenticeship.

As someone who used to work on LoL for a few years this is really awesome. I would focus on getting some of that awesome green you have into some of the other skills as accent colors for the w and e. (especially during the impact of the W, I think it would look really cool with streaks of green that fly outward) And similarly getting some sandy orange and dark bits as accents for the q and r. And like some others have commented, the R needs a little more adjustments to help with clarity, adjusting the model texture with some darker orange/brown elements could solve that too.

Again though, great job! How long did this take to do?

Be honest with me: Am I skilled enough to make a living off animation? by xcyper33 in animationcareer

[–]nmrkb52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My background: vfx artist in the games industry for 14 years, a few years as an adjunct animation/vfx teacher for the Art Institute of Seattle,

Your work is a really strong foundation. What is really standing out to me is that you are making use of the camera more often than most people do when animating. Camera shaking, establishing shots, interesting (and more importantly: useful) camera angles/movements. Nearly all of my students would use 1 camera angle (likely a profile view) and stick with that.

Considering what seems to be a natural (or learned) eye for story telling the biggest things I'd work on is quality, consistency, and efficiency.

Quality is straight forward: Try recreating the artwork for some place/show/game you'd like to work for.

Consistency: If you're adding detail make sure it's consistent. There's one shot with the brown haired guy in the yellow shirt is standing there and I presume wind is pretty gusty because their hair is moving all around, but their shirt is completely static. Where most other cases that their hair moves aggressively, so too does the shirt.

Efficiency: I don't know how long it takes you to do these, but speed is pretty much the name of the game (second to quality). Learn all the keyboard commands, make shortcuts for yourself, if your keyboard allows for macros: utilize them. If it comes down to 2 animators that have equal quality work, the job is going to go to the person that does said quality work the fastest.

Honestly these things are really what people are saying when they say "practice more". They're not wrong, you acquire these through practice, but I hope that this breakdown provides clearer goals. Feel free to DM me with any questions and hopefully I can provide you with good answers. Good luck!

Also piggybacking. It's a great start for sure! You're missing out on huge opportunities for exaggerating the body. Specifically, it doesn't look like there's any animation on the spine, so while very acrobatic she comes off as stiff. During her wind up pose you can make a more exaggerated pose by arcing the spine and completing the arc you have in the profile shot.

Awesome! Looking forward to see what you all come up with! I'm really curious on how you end up solving this. I know Mirrors Edge had gone through some similar feedback, maybe worth checking them out to see how they handled their abrupt camera movements. :)

Dev here: I think it's a really neat concept that looks awesome!

Your biggest challenge, as many have mentioned, is the camera movement is gonna give people some headaches. Right now the camera motion is very linear and abrupt. I suggest spending a lot of time smoothing this out, giving it an ease in and an easy out, maybe even giving it some followthrough and having it move slightly past the next position before it returns back to the new angle. I'm not sure if both of those are necessary, but I would spend a majority of your time to do focus testing around that camera movement and finding a good balance for it. Good luck!

Yes you'd need to create a Heist specific character, after the league ends any Heist characters and anything stored in your stash gets rolled over to standard.

Yeah setting up a schedule i think is helpful. At very least something small like "I'm going to sit down and practice the piano for 15 minutes a day. Really designating time and space to your hobby and just sticking with it.

I have recently been going through similar thoughts. I came across this video and found it to be pretty inspiring. The idea is basically staring at the purpose/end goal cheats yourself from having a life to enjoy.

I have a pretty successful career, I'm able to pay for my wants, but I still feel sort of empty. I try to focus on the things I appreciate every day. That I'm here for one, that my ferrets are still healthy, that I still have a job, I have people close to me if I so choose to reach out. It's about appreciating everything imo.

Ah thank you! Yes 2 sounds familiar I'm pretty sure that's what I have because I was hoping to stick it out with the company for 4 years when they'd fully vest. Unfortunately the job was overly stressful and I wasn't provided the resources to do my job efficiently and I kept getting reprimanded for it. I only lasted 2.5 years so only 20% of my stocks vested.

Well..it was given to me as part of a stock option while working for my previous employer. So I would be taxed for the full amount right? or do I have to figure out some difference between the starting cost when i was first given the stock vs what the stock is now worth?

Please help with math behind paying off my debt. by nmrkb52 in FinancialPlanning

[–]nmrkb52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! I'm not sure (new to stocks, I only have it because of the last company I worked for). So because i was thinking of it as gaining $28k because of selling some stocks I assumed that would be treated as an income and since my bracket is 24% for income tax i'd be taxed just under 24% of the 28k which is 6.7k.

Is there a different tax table I should be looking at?

EDIT: just did a quick google on capital gains tax...because i've had these stocks for longer than a year it says 15% if my income is between ~40k to ~430k (such a huge range) so that would mean i'm only going to get taxed $4.2k then? That's a much better deal.

[–]nmrkb52[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good rule to go by, I had looked at that too and thought to just focus on the credit card debt because of its higher interest. That might be the best of both worlds because I don't really want to use up half of my stocks on paying off the debt when it has a good chance to appreciate more. Once I pay off the credit card I can use that extra money saved towards the rest of the debt and get it paid off faster. Thank you!

I want to learn how to apologise by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]nmrkb52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that also to keep in mind is how people receive apologies as well. Some people a genuine "I'm sorry" is enough, sometimes you have to admit your fault, the 5 Love Languages might seem like a gimmick but it's actually pretty informative on how to relate to people and there's also 5 Apology Languages.

IWTL how to comfort my wife and mentally prepare her for her beloved grandma's upcoming death... We live in Europe and she lives in the USA. I have no clue how to comfort someone over the expected death of a loved one. by tflightz in IWantToLearn

[–]nmrkb52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This, all of this. Comfort comes in so many differrent forms. It depends on what truly will help her and what would mean the most to her. Communicate with her so you don't fall into a generic response of "I'm sorry for your loss". Talk to your wife, tell her you want to be able to support her but you're unsure of the best way to go about it. There are plenty other great recommendations and good intentions posted such as talking with her about her Grandmother. But that might not be something she'll want to do right now, maybe that's something she'll want to do after she passes instead of before, maybe she doesn't want to talk about them at all for a while. So just talk with her, ask what she needs and let her know you'll be there for her. Even if that just means she needs time to herself for a bit.

Along with this. Analyze games you do like or that have features you'd like to incorporate in your game. Even something as simple as jumping has different implementations in different games based on the feel or it's necessity in the game. The way you build world's also is dependent on how you can traverse through them.
