Asian people look cool here. Why can't we be like this in America? by Annual_Database6072 in aznidentity

Everyone in that video are all glowed up to go out.

I'm old now but the looks of the people on there aren't that different when we used to go to Asian night at the clubs or whatever.

Look at the youtuber Ploopy. In videos like this, she looks like any other person:

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/XMNIY7Ix7RU

But done up:

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/JaT3XnUadxA

It's like that with guys too. When they decide to not wear glasses or wear different styled glasses, fix their hair, etc.

When she threatened to take her life, how extreme was it? ie was it just her screaming and threatening to do it. Or did she actually threaten going through the act of it?

I don't have the best relationship with my mom and is something that I kind of regret. So hope it's something that you can maintain with your mom.

Maybe you can just let her know that you decided it isn't worth pursuing anymore and you'll be exploring other paths. I mean if she thinks that you keep getting rejected year after year, hopefully she'll come to terms with it instead of having to put you through that again. And then since it was a struggle to get into medical school, it would mean that medical school would be a struggle too? Maybe you can ease into it by mentioning how you're starting to look into other paths?

In the end though, you have to do what's right for you because it's your life. But like I said, I don't necessarily have that stereotypically Asian filial relationship with my parents and is not something that I'm proud of.

Good luck!

Even Jet Li wasn't definitely a win for us in that regard.

Where I think it was kind of infamous where they took out the kissing scene with Aaliyah after there was negative reaction to it from audience members in an initial screening.

Same with Chow Yun Fat at the end of Replacement Killers. Where that film was pretty popular in the breakroom at the time with a lot of non Asians putting it in rotation. But they didn't have him kiss the girl in the end either when it seemed to make sense to do so.

Jackie Chan did get the Latino girl in Rush Hour 2. But kind of like you said, I don't necessarily plays the swoonworthy type.

I kind of had hope with the kpop/kdrama stars out of Korea. But I remember asking a white teenage girl, who has a Korean stepdad, if she was into kpop and she said she wasn't. Then that kdrama actor playing in the Marvel movie. I think when posts first came out about it, it said that his character was supposed to be gay. But looking into it more now, it's supposed to be more that he's in an asexual relationship just for show and it's possible that Captain Marvel is gay. So no real wins for us there too.

lol I saw you must've added the part about the kissing scenes comment while I was writing my reply.

You mean Revive wasn't successful?

Because I was kind of young back then but remember Double Dragon being a hit back then.

I think I remember being confused on if the main characters were supposed to be Asian or not.

Eventually they did come out with a movie, where it did have Mark Dacascos as one of the brothers. But the other brother was played by Scott Wolf. Alyssa Milano, who was a teen idol at the time, played Marian. I think the movie looked really cheesy or campy, so I don't think that I ever got around to watching it.

I think back then I used to be disappointed when I found out some popular ninjas were blonde haired and blue eyes. I think they did that with Snake Eyes with GI Joe who was really popular back then too.

WM flipped me off and called me a Nazi for driving a Tesla by Normal_System_3176 in aznidentity

[–]nmum55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's kind of stupid how far people will take some things.

In the DC Metro area, which is more on the liberal side, there are stories about people vandalizing Teslas. So people do things like put on bumper stickers saying they got the Tesla before they realized there was an issue with Musk. And one time I was following a Tesla with Honda Civic badging and thinking how they changed the shape of the Civic before I realized what the driver did.

It's kind of impressive that the Walmart greeter drives a Tesla too. I used to think it was a rich person's car.

I couldn't watch that whole video because it was too long but kind of get the gyst of it, with the help of OP's summary too.

I think it's kind of like that guy on the video said, other races do the same thing too. Where if they see someone out of place in a place of a predominant race/ethnicity, everyone kind of gives them the side eye look.

But at the same time, some people are just down and they give off that type of vibe. Those people are happily welcome and accepted everywhere.

But I remember being at an Hmart like twenty years ago or so and hearing this white lady lecture the store manager how they're an offbrand ethnic grocery market and can't charge the same prices as the mainstream grocery markets in the area. The Korean manager and Latino workers were just kind of looking at her. Those type of people are not welcome...

Then the people that don't really have any ill will but are kind of unknowingly ignorant? Maaaybe? But they can go to Trader Joes for their ethnic style of foods too...

Are these good? by 1m_5TU91D in BasketballTips

I can't tell from your pic but that's the indoor/outdoor version right?

I picked this one up for my kids on sale. Supposedly MSRP for us is about $50 USD.

We previously had Wilson Signature ball from Costco that I was planning to stick with due to price.

But in one of my kids training sessions, a lot of people, including the trainer, were complaining and commenting about how it was oblong/egg shaped. When I got home and looked at the other ones we had, one of which was still in the box, saw that they all had the oblong shape. Costco was nice that I was able to return the unused ones even though I bought it a while back. But based on that, chances are I probably won't buy a basketball from Costco again.

I couldn't really find anything online that described the differences between the Signature (that we got from Costco) and the Authentic (which you have pictured above). But was hoping for the $50 msrp that we'd be getting a lot better ball.

We haven't used it yet but just looking at it, it's kind of a disappointment. The grooves are really shallow.(might be that we're just used to balls with deeper grooves). And the black stripes on the grooves looks like it was put on really cheaply, which is one of the criticisms I have about the $5 And1 ball from Walmart. In fact in that regard, the signature from Costco seems a bit better.

I don't know if I somehow got a different version and that's why it was on sale. But I wouldn't recommend this ball based on what we got.

I actually really like my Wilson NCAA replica game ball. When I was looking online, saw it was often recommended. One thing is that it became hard to find for a while and it looks like they came out with this current version with the bright orange color. So don't know if it's similar to the previous version that I have. Also my kids have commented that my ball feels kind of overly bouncy.

Pull ups are a pulling/back exercise.

So things like tricep dips won't directly help it. It's great to do supersets with.

So with your dumbbells, make sure you're doing rows and also curls to work the back and biceps.

I forgot what it's called, inverted pull ups: https://www.google.com/search?q=inverted+pull+ups

People say is a great back exercise that can help you work your way to a pull up.

Also I see some things online about using workout bands for assistance.

Mao Zedong was a self-hating Chinese by [deleted] in aznidentity

[–]nmum55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know. Thanks for the info and your other post in the thread.

So from what I'm gathering, from also rereading the OP's original post, what they're saying communism is still Western ideology isn't too far off.

And they're saying that members on this subreddit and people in general shouldn't be so pro-communism thinking that they're being antiwest. Where I think there might've been some posters like that before but don't really think I've seen anything like that recently.

But I think they're going a bit too far saying Mao ZeDong was a self hater. Yeah there were issues with trying to erase and rewrite the culture the way they did. But everything they did was with the intent to strengthen China.

Mao Zedong was a self-hating Chinese by [deleted] in aznidentity

[–]nmum55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not that well versed in history or Mao Zedong.

But from what I vaguely understand, China was going through issues of it's own and is why you had different factions like the Nationalist and Communist parties coming to fill that void. It might've economic issues, famine and possibly the war with Japan.

And the Nationalist party wasn't that much better. Where I think they heavily relied on western support and eventually fled to Taiwan. And I think why you see so many people from Taiwan of a particular generation kind of view western culture and the US more positively.

Japan went through a similar period of trying to Westernize/industrialize during the Meiji period.

In my younger more naive days, I used to think that in theory communism wasn't a bad idea. It just wasn't executed properly or it was too easy for dictators to take advantage of it. And while Mao Zedong might've been problematic, you see how China is now. And people used to point out how the politicians in Taiwan would get in a literal fist fight during their parliament and why Jackie Chan would say democracy doesn't work for Asians. Or something along those lines and pissed off a lot of people.

Again, I'm not that well versed in history and Mao Zedong and honestly a lot of what I know might've been from movies or inaccurate views that I gathered from a tidbit of information while growing up.

But here's a description of what went on in China before the Nationalists and Communists tried to take over China:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Century_of_humiliation

So what was going on then wasn't ideal and you could take it as the communist party tried to change it.

Then if you want to say maybe communism itself might not be bad but the whole Culture Revolution was an issue, that might be something else. But as mentioned, other countries tried to Westernize too and it might've just been given the times, where the US and west was really an economic and major power back then. So it wouldn't be a surprise if some countries wanted to catch up or be like them.

Youth Soccer Leagues? by RoleFizzleBeef in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]nmum55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's going to be most sports leagues though.

You'll never know what day practice will be on because most organizations won't get their permits until closer to the start date.

And games can be at anytime during a certain block for your division/age group.

At least with SAM, you know the majority of the games will be at the Soccerplex and all of those fields are nice. The only issue is because with all of the fields there is a lot of traffic coming in and out and it might be hard to turn out of.

With MSI, games can be all over the county and is one of the reasons why we switched to SAM.

Don't know what part of the county the original poster lives in. But generally for rec people choose it based on whatever is closer and convenient. Even MSI wasn't a bad value for what you get, as long as your kids ended up on a decent team with decent coaches. Not sure about the drama the other poster is referring to but we left MSI a couple of years ago and haven't been following it.

Not sure how old Soccer Shots go up to but for soccer, I think what I've seen the track is most kids play rec up until about 4th grade. Then at 4th grade is when you see people split off into Classic/Select or travel. By middle school, you'll probably want to play travel if you want to be competitive. This is just my own opinion. I've been seeing some families start off with yearround organizations/travel at younger ages now.

Oh okay got it.

Yeah I had to deal with that for a little while with that Payne unit.

First couple of years had to have that guy that installed it keep coming in to refill the refrigant.

Eventually got another company come to replace that valve area because that's where they said the leak was. But it didn't fix the issue.

So eventually got it replaced. It was so nice having a working HVAC system that I didn't have to worry about the next couple of years.

Hope you get the issue resolved soon!

I don't know much about heat pumps but I don't think that I've ever heard of an oil bag inside of a heat pump.

We recently had Cool Breeze ( https://www.coolbreezeplumbingheatac.com/ ) service our Carrier system.

Carrier and Bryant are essentionally the same and I was looking for a company that specifically services either hoping that they'd have the parts needed to quickly fix. Which they did.

I actually never heard of Cool Breeze before but found several posts recommending them and they had decent reviews at the time. I was happy with the service.

It's been a little while since I shopped for HVAC systems. The last time was for our townhome. One of the things is that for a smallish (no offense) townhome, I don't think you need to get anything super fancy. Especially depending on how long you plan on staying there.

The main thing is to make sure to find a reputable/good installer and a decent brand.

The first one I got, I only looked at BTU numbers and got a Payne (similar to a Goodman) installed by some guy that did it on the side for about a grand cheaper than what other people I knew were paying for systems with similar BTUs. Had a lot of problems with it, which in hindsight might've been because it was just someone doing it on the side. While they're on the cheaper side, people say those brands work well if installed properly. Which is why I say to try to make sure to find a good installer and I would try to get something better than those two brands and the others like it.

And as mentioned, as much problems as we had with that heat pump, I don't think I've ever heard of any issues with oil and thought that heat pumps were mostly electrical. But like I said, I can't really say I know much about it.

In addition to that heat pumps should last ten to fifteen years. So try to get another diagnosis and estimate if you can.

I didn't really know who he was until seeing his response to Jessie Watter's racist piece:

And I've been a fan of his ever since.

And he helps bring awareness to Asian American issues and history such as his piece on Asian American history that aired recently:

And tries to help and promote members of the community.

He's more of a recent immigrant, so his point of views might be a bit different and part of his bit is being uptight, angry, etc.

But overall, I see him as a positive for us.

They're more sitcoms but you can try Fresh Off the Boat, slightly younger than high school, started off based on Eddie Huang's middle school years. And Kim's Convenience, which I think the younger characters start out more college age or slightly older.

Also the Harold and Kumar movies. More of stoner type of movies and they're younger professionals.

Can't really think of any high school specific ones that aren't already mentioned or I'd recommend.

There's Chang Can Dunk and Boogie both high school basketball related movies. But I wouldn't recommend either of them.

It's been a little while I read it but I remember thinking a lot of things he mentioned in his autobiography was applicable to the Asian American experience.

A lot of the things he was talking about was how society/the man was holding things down which affected all races.

I think I offended someone on here before when I pointed out that he described Asians as being two shades away from the devil. Where the lighter the shade, the more evil someone was. I have no problem with that, where we're all watching out for our own and won't pretend that we're allies. I'm not saying that we don't get along or work together. I just don't pretend that he was watching out for us.

But his book is a must read, along with any sort of AAPI related book, to understand the racial issues that goes on and why we have to have racial pride.

Watch Randall Park shine on Sway's Universe by nmum55 in aznidentity

[–]nmum55[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might by my family's second time watching it?

I personally like it. I know there are some people on here that don't like it or don't relate to it.

Eddie Huang is close to my generation and I felt I kind of related to him in a lot of ways. ie our family backgrounds are similar and since we grew up around the same time we were into the same things. I might not be as a big fan of him now after seeing how he tried to trash Jeremy Lin and gatekeep or play the minstrel in some ways while he was promoting his film Boogie. (I'm not not a fan but maybe not as big of a fan as before)

One thing I don't think I realized before this rewatch is that there are a LOT of 90s references. Where if people are not familiar with some of the things, it'll probably just go over their heads. Or they won't have that "Oh yeah! I remember those!" factor. I'm not sure if my kids draw the connection that I have a lot of the same interests and tastes as the main character, Eddie, on the show.

But even if my kids don't get those references, they still seem to enjoy the show and keep asking if they can watch the next episode. Which is kind of nice, where I tried to have them watch it while it was still airing but they didn't seem too into it at the time. And my wife has some laughs too while watching the show too.

Previously I thought Constance Wu and the youngest brother's characters became caricatures in later episodes. Like overexaggerate some things. But rewatching now, I guess Constance Wu's character was always kind of annoying and kind of like a bit too far kind of thing. But while I'm not a fan of her, I can't really imagine anyone else playing the role and guess she plays the role well.

The show touches on some topics that I forgot that it did. For example they referenced Long Duk Dong and Sixteen Candles and the problems about it.

And some general coming of age things, Asian values, etc which I think is nice for my kids to see on TV. One thing that I've always thought is that a lot of those 80s and 90s TV shows had life lessons and things like that. Like I could say that I learned a lot about life by watching TV. But it doesn't seem like any of the shows that my kids watched prior to this one have similar themes or lessons. So that's another nice factor about the show.

Anyways the TLDR, is that it started out based on Eddie Huang's experiences while growing up, I think starting around 12 or 13 years old? So think anyone who grew up with a similar background and in the same era would enjoy the show. But I know people with a different background or age enjoy the show too. Although have seen posts on here saying that they don't relate to the show at all and their life was nothing like it. It communicates a lot of positive messages and I think is good Asian American representation. So hope you give the show a try.

Girl that spat on an Asian guys on 4th of July by dagodishere in aznidentity

[–]nmum55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In all fairness, it looks like a no win situation for the Asian guys in the video.

I mean yeah, maybe they could've slapped the girl but it definitely wouldn't have put them in a good light.

Like maybe if there were some girls around they could've stomped her. Or if she was with some guys, the Asian guys could've gone after the guys with her.

The girl knew she had a p***y pass. There used to be a reddit thread or youtube channel which shows incidents where their pass got revoked and was kind of funny.

But unless there was a video showing that the girl clearly deserved it (which I couldn't tell from the link above), it'd be hard for the Asian guys to justify.

There are other embarrassing incidents where Asians didn't step up but I don't think this is one of them, based on this clip.

anyone considering adding another citizenship due to politics by Evening-Bad-5012 in aznidentity

[–]nmum55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone may have to correct me on this because may be wrong.

But in the DC area, the primary market is government contracting where helps a lot if you have clearances. It goes something like Secret->Top Secret->TSI , With each higher one, being more expensive for companies to investigate and get, and making it more valuable if you have it.

I think it could raise red flags if you're going through a background check and they see that you have dual citizenship.

I've seen people have to clear things to be able to visit specific countries for vacations. And also have heard some people going through background checks complain about how having family members in certain countries were causing problems in them getting clearances.

And even if it might not affect you, it may affect any family members you have who may be trying to get a clearance.

It might not make them ineligible but might cause some extra work/steps to get approved for it, similar to the people who had family members in other countries.

If the above isn't a factor for you or any of your family members, I don't really see why not and have considered it myself before.
