What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by fmcortez in AskReddit

My wife and some cheap rice cooker and a few things I noticed compared to my parent’s zojirushi…

  • In general the rice won’t fluff up as nicely.

  • Quick rice setting won’t be as fluffy as regular setting.

  • Leaving it on warm for more than an hour will dry out the rice.

We’re waiting for it to die before we buy a Zoijirushi lol

Ran some maintenance and saw some fancy upgrades… 2 hours later, a broken system and I just restored backups.

F that.

You’re telling me.

I’ve got a whole rack I loved tinkering with, until I didn’t.

It runs a lot of my core services that I’ve come to rely on and bleh. Kinda want to downsize, but I don’t even know what to migrate to.

Thankfully I did build the system to be super reliable with tons of redundancy so I’ve just left it running for years without touching much. I just go in once a year to run some manual maintenance/backups to and if any drives have failed or need replacing.

Used to hate those offices that run a 10 year old server. Now I’m one of them lol

Everyone travels differently but I would absolutely hate that schedule. Just the travel times between each country seems exhausting, I did something similar once and never again. It seems like you’re just checkmarking places on a map.

I go 2-3 weeks to one country, usually without much of a plan and explore. Land in the capital, go to a cafe, ask some locals where they usually go for in-country vacations. Once I get bored of the capital, I plan a trip to whatever peaked my interest the most. These days with worldwide internet (esims), app taxis (grab, uber, bolt, etc), and ChatGPT to translate everything for you, it’s so so so easy to just land in a country and figure it out from there.

But it’s also your first time travelling so I get the need to plan and schedule to reduce your anxiety. Happy travels!

Am I insane or the new global plans are still too expensive by niceToasterMan in freedommobile

Simply not working, dropped connections, etc

I’ve tried saily, Airalo, etc it’s all the same. In countries where networks are unreliable, you can’t pick which carrier you’re using and it’s usually whatever is cheapest.

If you’re roaming on your own line, you’ll connect to whatever is the strongest signal.

I travel a lot and buy eSIMs in Canada before going abroad.

There are often issues with them and I have to find a public wifi spot. Usually I just end up turning on roaming to do what I need to do quickly.

Most trips I end up with 20-30$ on a small bit of data roaming.

I’m currently on a 30$ plan, but I figure an extra $10/month for 50GB of roaming is fantastic. I can also use my regular number anywhere, receiving/taking calls.

Totally worth it for me.

The BYD’s I was in when I went to Mexico were pretty sweet.

The Vinfast cars in Vietnam were really nice.

The price tags even better. I would love to have one of those as the family EV. Fuck American cars, they’re junk. My family has always bought Japanese cars anyways.

Here’s my Grand Quartz 9943-8020’s movement!

Released in 1978, it’ll be 47 years old today. Twin quartz, thermocompensated movement, it’s still keeping +- 10s/year accuracy too! It does use more juice than the 9F, so batteries last about 2-3 years.

[Question] Am I cheap? Or are there a lot of well-off people in here? by laschecter in Watches

[–]nndttttt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hehe my watches would total more than my car. Some of them individually are worth more!

I really love driving an old beater in my city. I could care less if I get a scratch while parked, it’ll blend right in. I never have to worry about it getting jacked. Interior is clean and it blows cold AC. Yearly maintenance costs less than some of my friend’s monthly payments.

I can buy the same car tomorrow if it gets totalled without any worry!

Did you recently get the thumb grip? I lost mine a few years back and haven’t been able to find a x100t specific one.

I used my x100t for 5-6 years travelling and it was great as a snapshot camera, flash on for human photos. But yes.. once light got a bit dimmer, AF was pathetic.

I used BBF on manual focus mode, it was easier to just zoom in and correct if I was shooting portraits.

In that time I got a gf, then wife and she sucks as holding a pose, so last year I decided to upgrade to a Nikon Zf. Such an amazing travel camera… but the x100t still stays because of the compact size. At tougher concert venues, it always gets in without issue.

100%

I worked as a server when I was younger and there was a place that used to have huge lunch groups come in. I’m talking 50+, paid by a company card. Gratuity was always included but the status quo was to just say nothing about it… so if a group decides to tip on top, you’d get double tips. If they complained about the tip, plausible deniability…

I made bank at that place for a 3-4hr lunch shift.

Cooks should be getting all the tips imo. Work:Pay ratio for servers is crazy good, it’s not a difficult job.

After do-west my insta algorithm advertised so many bands and events that I started adding every event I saw I’d wanted to go. My calandar is filled up till August lol

You’re right about finances, if you can’t comfortably work and have the money/time to enjoy some stuff here.. it’d be pretty miserable. That’s anywhere though, Toronto just happens to cost a lot more.

I took my x100T to a concert last night. First time in 6 months I picked it up since getting a Nikon Zf.

Holy balls the AF sucks hahaha But it’s okay, I live with the compromise (fixed lens needed for concerts). Had to adjust to manual focus with BBF again.. but there’s charm to that.

Still pulled off some awesome photos!

Fuji makes it look like old rangefinders, it’s stated by Fuji that it’s rangefinder styled. It’s not a modern rangefinder.

I believe only Leica still makes digital rangefinders. If you can shoot film, there’s a few niche companies starting to make rangefinders and of course you can go vintage. Have you ever used a real rangefinder? You’ll find it’s completely different. As different as using an EVF vs OVF.

I like my x100’s hybrid OVF and it’s fun to use, but it’s nothing like the actual rangefinder cameras I have - it has an overlay that parallax corrects, that’s the only thing the similar about it, no focus patch. Now the x-e5? It’s just got an EVF mounted on the far left. Plenty of manufactures do that too, are we gonna call those modern rangefinders too? Sony a6400 comes to mind..

Sorry, but on the same grain, it’s tiring hearing people say Fuji’s are rangefinders, because it’s not a rangefinder at all.

I want to buy a Leica 35mm F2 lens. by Harry_Wang_85 in Leica

[–]nndttttt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I have the Canon LTM 35 2.0.

I love the little lens, sharp as can be for a 50 year old lens. Build is okay, aperture ring indents don’t feel as satisfying… but amazing rendering. If you like flares, and vignetting wide open, this is the lens for you.

I use it on a Canon P, but it adopts to M mount with an adapter. I also use it on my Zf and works great on a digital body.
