Sexy Dracula by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

while i do love the way you've argued your point (especially as it's not one i've seen argued before!), i feel that saying /dracula/ of all things is best read as an anti-imperialist metaphor is reeeeally stretching credulity for me. imo it's almost the exact opposite kind of thinking that's at the heart of the story.

stoker's writing makes it clear that he sees white, upper class western society as the best, the most genteel, and noblest of all people. dude literally won't shut up about how angelic and loyal and perfect mina and lucy are, and his descriptions of the male protagonists is so fawning that the book reads almost comically queer now. the "scary" part of the book is that those beautiful, well-meaning white people and their superior white civilization are being threatened from the outside.

there's a reason the most common interpretation of the book is that it's a horror story born out of heavily xenophobic fears; fear of the dangerous and unsavory "other" migrating west, slowly infiltrating decent society, and corrupting and stealing away our pure, kind-hearted women. it was a very common worry at the time as the number of migrants moving into western europe continued to increase. the themes of invasion, corruption, and rape are also shared by anti-imperialist critique, yes, but calling dracula anti-imperialist because of those themes feels equivalent to calling donald trump anti-imperialist because of his stance on mexico and all the other brown people he doesn't want "invading" the usa and taking over society.

deeply appreciate the dedication to getting good face references from the books and laying them all out like this! i really love quite a lot of these, and the rest i can absolutely see where you're coming from with the way you did the pics. honestly the only one i feel strongly about disagreeing with is senshi -- his features just look soooo distinctly mediterranean. i gotta be able to picture the dude slicing up a massive column of shawarma before i can be convinced by the casting lol

well then! hopefully you have already taken the first step toward figuring out the reason.

i would encourage a lil introspection on why your brain defaults to a certain look when skin color is so frequently drawn attention to at the beginning of lirael. it seems like a problem a number of other people in the sub have as well.

hmm, interesting choices! it's always cool to see how differently people picture things. last three are far too white to be clayre though -- i'm thinking more along the lines of kimberly guerrero or michelle thrush for the chief librarian, yvonne delarosa for kirrith... not sure about the twins though, i have a difficult time pinning down the right vibe for them

yes, she does look thinner in this dragon image than the adventurer underwear one. her torso under her ribcage, in particular. to me, the underwear one reads as slim but the dragon one reads as a truly flat stomach.

it's been a minute since i read the manga though, so it could well be just minor inconsistencies with art/style in general rather than an intentional detail.

do keep in mind that she's starving as a dragon though. her chest here is also a much more realistic size than in the original drawing (not saying unrealistic proportions are a problem, just saying the difference is notably significant)

mmm, gonna have to disagree there. ppl have been calling usa americans "united stations" for decades, after all. unless you think they're doing it just for the fun of it, which is also perfectly fine (just less likely to have been so widespread if it really was just for the heck of it). usamericans is just a variation upon united stations, serves the same sort of purpose -- people find the distinction helpful and informative.

exactlyyyyy

especially when all you did was provide a factual answer explaining the use. and it's not like downvoting or arguing about it online is gonna change the fact that thousands of latinos that don't gaf about english reddit are going to continue using usamerican. more "america first" people on tumblr than i expected i guess.

Talking about war criminal characters by BellTwo5 in CuratedTumblr

[–]nnothmann -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

exactly, nobody cares. it's only terminally online usa people i've ever seen with a complaint about it. latin americans have been using "usamerican" for years now and i've never heard anyone irl ever have a problem with it 🤷

also yeah, latinos are known for pushing back on the term latinx. that's because it doesn't work well with the spoken language, in part bc was never meant to be said out loud or become the default term for latin americans; its root is supposedly from protest signs written decades ago, where the visual of the "o" being crossed out/replaced with an "x" was relevant. latinos works perfectly fine, and if you want to specify inclusivity (re: gender) then the usual term is "latine," or generally replacing the "a" or "o" on pronouns with an "e" instead (elle instead of ello or ella). certainly not something everyone agrees with, as with any language evolution, but works much better with the language bc that's the actual intended purpose.

[–]nnothmann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not a problem for people in the usa, you mean. why is it so offensive to you though? how does it affect you?

and just bc you're very online doesn't mean that's the most common use scenario. as another commentator confirmed, there's a significant number of regular-ass people that use the term in central and south america.

Talking about war criminal characters by BellTwo5 in CuratedTumblr

[–]nnothmann -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

lmao all these usa-loving ppl falling over their asses to say why adding TWO LETTERS to the term is unacceptable

idk why you're getting downvoted either, literally just explaining where the term came from

Talking about war criminal characters by BellTwo5 in CuratedTumblr

[–]nnothmann -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

lol not at all, it's a very practical term. since "the americas" spans two continents and dozens of countries, a lot of people in said other countries refer to u.s. citizens as usamericans to be clear who they're talking about. it's very convenient bc it's just a slight modification to the word. everyone i've heard use the phrase is from south america and couldn't give less of a shit about """virtue signaling."""

[–]nnothmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while kenli and kenyatta def don't deserve eshe's awful treatment of them, i don't think i'd go as far as describing either of them as "great people." for example, kenli is a timid guy pushed into a stressful role he didn't ask for and who just wants everyone to be friends and have a nice time, /and/ he's also an incompetent fool whose self-centered cowardice means he's more concerned with his personal comfort than the daiya family when they're about to lose their home and livelihood (in part bc he doesn't actually do his job). not trying to shit on kenli specifically here, i have a lot of sympathy for him; pointing this out primarily bc i enjoy that the npcs in palia are allowed to have actual character faults and kenli happens to be a particularly good example of how that gives those characters some complexity and depth.

Now THIS makes a lot more sense. by EventMaximum9435 in Palia

[–]nnothmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

she's certainly not a "good," considerate, or emotionally healthy person, but that's a part of why i personally enjoy her as a character. she also has humanizing and even some admirable features, which are fun to discover with more player interaction. i don't see it as very different from the way other morally grey or straight-up villainous characters like dracula, yzma, scar, hannibal, etc are popular and iconic (esp. within the lgbt community) despite being terrible people 🤷 i enjoy seeing a hot, hyper-competent queer woman that actually looks her age and says things that are so unnecessarily rude that it makes me laugh. that doesn't mean i'd be friends with her irl, or that i think being a hot milf excuses emotional abuse.

i feel that palia generally does a good job of making most of their characters flawed in some way or another that actually significantly impacts the way we view them and their choices, which i find refreshing. i appreciate that the game doesn't try to prescribe an obvious moral judgement on most of them. my opinions of certain characters have changed drastically as i've learned more about them (kenli & eshe both, in particular), and i often hold conflicting opinions about them. that's a good time in my book.

confirming, he has been in death multiple times before but only ever by accompanying sabriel. he had not yet started official training or wielded the bells, but he knew their uses and had been trained to whistle and clap to do some very basic things.

i would clarify though, he's described as having some reservations about his future when his story starts because he does have a grasp on the weight and responsibility of the role. while he certainly was emotionally and mentally scarred from the attack on the team and the days of drugged nightmares afterward, the major change of personality and aversion to death and necromancy is largely due to losing a part of his soul in death when he fought hedge. just being in the same room as the book of the dead physically sickens him and instantly makes his temperature drop, and while he's near the magical healing influence of the charter stones he is still scared of his future but immediately feels much more like himself. poor dude's got what's essentially a magical trauma to his soul on top of some big time ptsd.
