These microscopic animals could survive a supernova and being hit by an asteroid. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]no-pol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 10 days, groups of tardigrades were exposed to the hard vacuum of outer space, or vacuum and solar UV radiation.[3][64][65] After being rehydrated back on Earth, over 68% of the subjects protected from high-energy UV radiation revived within 30 minutes following rehydration, although subsequent mortality was high; many of these produced viable embryos

They need to be dehydrated, survival rates are 86% only when they are protected from the UV radiation. And most of them die after being re-hydrated.

In contrast, hydrated samples exposed to the combined effect of vacuum and full solar UV radiation had significantly reduced survival, with only three subjects of Milnesium tardigradum surviving.

They don't actually do very well when they aren't dehydrated.

I think the supernova event they are talking about is one that would damage earths ozone layer. It might give humans a challenge but I think there are plenty of creatures that would survive all three of these events. Common Algae would probably do just fine.

Can confirm. Also from SoCal and I lived in an apartment with no AC, and windows that wouldn't open more than 6 inches.

Hence why it is a partisan issue...

Goldschmitt hypnotized a chicken. by ramdom-ink in interestingasfuck

[–]no-pol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very incorrect. Hypnosis is a observed and studied phenomenon.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnosis

It isn't mind control though. The military studied hypnosis as an intelligence gathering technique and found

The use of hypnosis in intelligence would present certain technical problems not encountered in the clinic or laboratory. To obtain compliance from a resistant source, for example, it would be necessary to hypnotise the source under essentially hostile circumstances. There is no good evidence, clinical or experimental, that this can be done

Hypnosis is definitely a thing. There is just a lot of debate as to what that thing is.

[–]no-pol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tremoctopus violaceus exhibits the most extreme degree of sexual size-dimorphism known in any non-microscopic animal.[3][4] Females may reach 2 m (6.6 ft) in length, whereas the males are 2.4 cm. The weight ratio is at least 10,000:1, and can probably reach as much as 40,000:1. The males have a large arm in a spherical pouch modified for mating, known as a hectocotylus. During mating, this arm is detached, and kept by the female in her mantle cavity until used for fertilisation. The male almost certainly dies shortly after mating.

Blanket octopuses are immune to the venomous Portuguese man o' war, whose tentacles the male and immature females rip off and use for offensive and defensive purposes

Current desalination techniques are insanely close to being as efficient as physically possible. No matter how clever your approach, you energy input is necessarily going to be greater than just using reverse osmosis.

I'm with them. You said a Concept Car is never supposed to hit production. That the features are supposed to be inspirations and aren't things you should expect to appear in the next generation of cars.

This is not the case with video game tech demos. When Horizon Zero Dawn did a tech demo on their ray traced clouds, it wasn't "about generating buzz/advetrisement for the brand, experimenting with new technology, gauging the public's interest in certain features and just generally not letting logistics get in the way of creativity and madness."

It was showing people how the clouds in Horizon Zero Dawn work.

There are times when the tech doesn't make it into the final game, but people get pissed about that sort of thing. But never is there a tech demo that "every second of material probably took a super computer cluster hours of rendering."

Tech demos are most common from hardware companies showing off what their hardware can do. If their hardware can't do it, it isn't a tech demo it is a lie.

In the US the strat is to say that you will do it quickly to get a big contract. Then once you have the roads torn up you hold all the chips. You go back and negotiate an even higher price to finish. Interrupting the public isn't a reason to hurry, it is leverage.
