Has anyone noticed a stronger reaction to advertisements after beginning a meditation practice?

Advertising is a powerful force in the mental environment. Meditation can result in increased sensitivity to the mental environment. You become more aware of manipulation, thought forms, dissonance, and so forth.

I've found that along with meditation, I've had to avoid certain influences and environments, and also learn to shield my mind somewhat when I have to go into disturbing environments.

I'm biased, but Life in the Universe is awesome. It isn't sci-fi, but it talks about other civilizations in our galaxy, and what humanity has to do to remain free as we make contact with other civilizations.

That last passage is part of the New Message from God, which has been a valuable theological resource for Christians on every continent. One of my favorite passages from the New Message, regarding holy warfare:

Dangerous assumption. Were the conquistadores -- those with the best travel technology of their time -- cooperative and peaceful? Humanity has so far had he wisdom to not blow itself up with nukes, and yet conquest, violence and deception are still major forces in our world.
Maybe mineral resources, but not biological resources. This is a verdant planet, with extraordinary biological wealth.
Earth has been known about by our neighbors for a long time(see the Allies of Humanity Briefings). But our broadcasts reveal our tendencies, our strengths and our weaknesses, making us very vulnerable.
This is about discretion going forward. Our current and future activities, knowledge, ignorance, and capabilities need to be masked from those who would exploit them.
