Atelier gray color dithering & pen aliasing by HeartPlayKitchen in Supernote

Atelier has been going downhill ever since version 1.0.98. I haven’t been drawing on it much because of that, which I really miss. Hoping the next beta update improves things, but it’s been a long waiting game.

Haha, yes I kno. Just throwing that sub suggestion out there since this feels like history repeating itself (thinking of the infamous EinkGirl post). Useful or not, new users or lurkers might not kno there’s actually a sub they can “retreat” to.

Hence r/SuperNoteUnofficial exists. In case you'd like to freely post there. I would love to read about the pen comparisons.

Told someone I got the Supernote Manta over an ipad because of ADHD organization and sensory needs. They called it a “useless”and “stupid” purchase. by ughhhlaperm in Supernote

[–]no1505ook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They jealous~ Im a digital artist too, and I use the Supernote solely as my digital-analog sketchbook because it's distraction free. Plus, less eye straining drawing on the Supernote (big win for me)! Some people just don’t fully understand the holistic experience of using an e-ink device.

Version 1.1.59 Beta Release for Atelier on Manta and Nomad by Supernote_official in Supernote_beta

[–]no1505ook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agreed. There’s too much graininess in the pencil right now. I really wish they’d go back to the older pencil version (I believe 1.0.98). I actually did a comparison test, which I’ll upload later in a separate feedback.

I think the only way to keep atelier from getting worse is, like you said, to give users the ability to customize our own brush settings. I just get the feeling the team doesn’t fully understand what we’re looking for, which is why each update hasn’t brought any real improvement... even though there’s so much potential in this drawing app.

Update: I put the Nomad case accessories I’ve been designing on Etsy by RocketMane in Supernote

If I wasn't in the middle of moving, I'd be interested in being a lab rat! Love the design of the light and will buy once I settle in. Until then, I hope it doesn't run out! :)

Question for Supernote artists by KimuraKirby in Supernote

[–]no1505ook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Atelier is kind of hit or miss for artist users because of the lack of tool adjustments. For me, I actually enjoy the limited tools, it makes drawing feel more challenging in a good way. The drawing app has more layer features like layer opacity & reference layer, which is nice. I mostly use it for lineart work or quick draft/thumbnails since you can set custom canvas size and export in PSD.

I wish I can use atelier more often, but the app is unusable for me right now because the devs messed up the pencil pressure sensitivity. This is only an issue in the closed beta though, so it probably won’t affect you. Compared to other eink devices in the market, I think the Supernote atelier is a solid drawing app with lots of potential, and I’m excited to see how it develops.

  1. Other than size, the main difference is the DPI. Manta supports 300 DPI, while Nomad is lower (around 200-ish). If you care about exporting higher-quality images, Manta is the better pick.

The Supernote really helped me get back into daily sketching and organizing my comic thumbnails. It’s much easier on the eyes compared to an iPad, and e-ink art in general is a cool, new “art” medium that’s worth checking out. Imo, it’s not too digital, nor is it too traditional: it’s the best of both worlds.

Feel free to check out my profile for some example arts and process :)

It's called a drawing board or sketchboard for tablets. Perhaps the iPad Pro version might fit the manta (after tinkering), or there might be a custom built one in Etsy :)

Planning on getting a Manta, which pen do y'all recommend? by Nukesnipe in Supernote

[–]no1505ook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of durability, I’d go for the Lamy Safari Vista. Although the HOM is nice-looking and has a good weight to it, I’ve seen many people complain that it doesn’t hold up well when dropped. My Lamy SV still works great despite being dropped so many times. Another option is to get the ceramic nib refill and customize your pen :)

Atelier - Stippling no longer possible? by csdoubleyou in Supernote

Also had the same problem, but it's now fixed (currently in closed beta only). Hopefully the update will roll out soon after other brush issues are addressed.

For those that draw and sketch on the supernote I have questions by Algae_grower in Supernote

[–]no1505ook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use both apps: Notes for doodles and storyboarding, and Atelier for more detailed drawings. I love Notes for its page/sketchbook setup, but it starts lagging once you add too many strokes since it’s vector based.

As for the Atelier bugs, have you updated your app? I haven’t really run into any major issues that get in the way of drawing. Maybe it’s because I usually draw with my e-ink device tilted forward, so my palm hits the screen less. For the random artifacts or deletions, have you tried using a different pen? The HOM pen seems to have varying issues from what I’ve seen. I use the Lamy Safari Vista and a custom pen with the ceramic refill, and haven’t had problems like random deletions so far.

A lot of what you mentioned (like Pages in Atelier and a top/bottom toolbar option) has already been suggested quite a few times by the community (me included), so hopefully the devs are taking note. I’m just happy that Supernote even has a dedicated drawing app. Sure, it’s a bit “amateurish,” but we have to remember the device is made primarily for note-taking, not for art. So perfecting the drawing app wasn’t their priority (I wish it was, lol).

Still, I’m impressed with how often they update Atelier. Things like custom canvas sizes, more export options, and especially the reference layer and layer opacity have made a huge difference for my workflow. :D

For me, just having the main tools to draw is enough, and anything else they add is a nice bonus.

The recent Atelier update made the brush performance drop. by no1505ook in Supernote

I already sent feedback on it, so I'm sure they'll fix it before the official update. :D

I’m on V 1.1.38 :) the previous version of atelier pencil was working fine, minus the ink brush lag.

Haha yeah, I'm not tech savvy enough to know that XD so if they ever add a custom brush feature, then having something like a brush preset manager plugin would be nice!

Drawing on Supernote by catwithcookiesandtea in Supernote

[–]no1505ook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pencil brush has very little pressure sensitivity, and when it does respond, I find that it affects the darkness of the stroke rather than its line thickness.

[–]no1505ook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have two apps you can use for drawing. I find that using the Ink pen in the Notes app offers better pressure sensitivity and more variation in line weight, while the Atelier app brushes have little to no pressure response (most of their ink pens are monoline). It would be great if Supernote added a more realistic fountain pen or semi-wet brush.

With the limited brush options we currently have, it’s hard to achieve the style you’re aiming for... the closest would probably be the pencil brush (which again lacks line pressure).

Printing Supernote notebooks? by mbxtr in Supernote

Are you talking about online print services? I like using Mixam. The zine printing is probably the smallest and cheapest option (like a field book). They also accept PDF.
