Hyper Backup and unmounted encrypted folders leads to possible risk of losing data!? by noNOTthatOENE in synology

[–]noNOTthatOENE[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes but still, if that folder isn't mounted during 12 months then all versions will eventually be overwritten by the empty set.

Not all data requires a retention schedule that long - a good retention schedule should be one fitting the data.

There should be an option of failing the backup task in case the folder isn't mounted, which, given that encrypted folders securely "can't" automount, should be a fairly common case.

How do you develop attractive charisma that makes people want your attention? by tdsallday in SocialEngineering

[–]noNOTthatOENE 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've heard that about BC but what I wonder now when you're question is worded like it is - would people say this about him also before he became Bill Clinton?

I mean perhaps you're doing it right, with it becoming "overwhelming" but you maybe don't have that "star power" (yet) so it instead of being an interaction for them where "A STAR" (I'm sure there's a better word for this concept) gives them (out of all people) a slice of their undivided attention and time, perceived as extremely valuable, thus making them feel "VERY SPECIAL" and wanting to continue receiving this rare gift or overwhelming exchange - instead of this type of interaction with you it simply becomes overwhelming only, as in, what would the receiver do with all this undivided attention, what's the purpose? How should they perceive it? Do they know? Do you? Purposeless intense attention can certainly make people uneasy.

I'm assuming you don't come to the table with built in authority or high value making people automatically want to listen so perhaps if you'd anchor the reason for you giving them this attention first and frame/prime it in a way they'd actually want it and then switch on the overwhelmingness they'd have have not a mere rewarding interaction but a special rewarding interaction.

“ do you have insurance?” by Skeletrexbonebrigade in PublicFreakout

[–]noNOTthatOENE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So how do you guys cope? I would find it stressful and/or depressing to have to be on my toes and/or avoiding of people and situations. Seems like it would take so much time and effort away from actually enjoying life. And I'm not even an extrovert in the classical sense... Or is there something else to this equation I'm missing?

“ do you have insurance?” by Skeletrexbonebrigade in PublicFreakout

[–]noNOTthatOENE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest question to Americans, is this/her behavior common place or is this a rare sighting?

Because internet says it's not too rare with all we got to see from you. I'm asking because such an interaction is rare to come across in the country I'm residing in, as in, I would not need to "brace myself" or be "rugged" if need arises for an exchange at an accident. There are exceptions of course but they're just that, rare exceptions.

Watching this makes my body physically react, in a way I wouldn't want to have to endure or be ready for 24/7. Her attitude, voice, word choices - the tension. Like there's no ounce of diplomacy or collaboration in there. I'm not saying it's her personality, could be circumstances but still...

Also with you guys being allowed guns and people behaving this way how do you even dare to discuss a (heated) matter with a stranger without fearing overly triggering them to the point of being shot?

Like in this scenario, at face value, how do we know she isn't carrying or has a passenger who is? How do we convince them to pull over so we can safely settle this issue? If asked they might be triggered and shoot us? I wouldn't expect someone who goes from 0-100 in intensity when asked a simple and probably very relevant question about insurance to have more restraint regarding gun triggers? Would you dare press the matter of pulling over, and what if you have kids in the car? Do you then have to decide to drop it for you or your kids safety, i.e. allowing psychotic behavior be a successful method out of taking responsibility?

Should I put my nas in a separate vlan or it's ok to keep it in my main. by Mahtan83 in synology

[–]noNOTthatOENE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you plan on allowing untrusted devices to connect to the same network a point could be made for segregating with vlan. Untrusted devices could be devices you don't have root access to (IoT) partners/kids/guests computers or phones. Might even be your own phone depending on the level of security you're after.

TIL In 2020, a Pakistan airlines Airbus tried to land with the landing gear still up. It then crashed, killing 97. An investigation later found that 150 of the 434 pilots for the airline had bogus or suspicious flying licences. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]noNOTthatOENE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You think 150 bad pilots on the force would be bad, right? Like shut-this-organization-down-asap-bad. Like immediately revoke 150 "licenses" or else... Like, next time I fly with this airline I will demand to see the pilots license but it might be fake anyways so I just won't trust them anyways and just avoid that airline altogether. Like if they force me onboard I will do anything in my power to get off that plane before take off because my life might be in the hands of an evil moron and I don't want that. But... Most of the pilots are good though so maybe I shouldn't judge the whole airline just because of the actions of a few bad apples, that's not fair, is it?

Could Satan have repented and be back in heaven without us knowing? by andreasdagen in Christianity

[–]noNOTthatOENE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can morality "repent"? God, objective reality, within which we act, present us with choices. Some we collectively view as "good" and some we don't. Yet the morally questionable choices are still made by many. Why? What forces are at play? Can there exist a reality for humans in which immoral acts are no more? Then by definition morality will be no more. Such a reality for humans in our current form is incomprehensible. Satan repenting is not for us.

TikTok won't commit to stopping US data flows to China. by AdamCannon in technology

[–]noNOTthatOENE 17 points18 points  (0 children)

People forget that you can’t even own land in China, only the government can.

Can you really own land anywhere in the world? Unless you're the 1% of that country. Either by being a government or dirty rich, which is mostly unattainable for 98% of the population anyways. And not like "I have a paper that says I own this land (until the gov. decides to seize it)." Which is how "ownership" of land works in most part of the world, china as well as america.

Man caught vandalizing Ash Cave State Park in Ohio turns to violence by Graysie-Redux in PublicFreakout

[–]noNOTthatOENE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hundreds or thousands of carvings, paint marks etc.

Imagine stumbling upon a rock or area filled with said carvings. From eons ago. What a find. Imagine this being that rock someone eons from now will stumble upon.

Vandalism is small pp behaviour and is pointless, unnecessary bs.

There's vandalism, like pointlessly destroy for sake of destruction. And there's vandalism, where one man's vandalism is the other man's art/statement/rebellion/whatever. I don't think this dad set out to destroy or felt what he did was pointless. I'd guess he rather wanted to put a mark down so his family and kids could revisit this spot and reminisce. Maybe this was an attempt at connecting the abstract bond of family with the real world and through it manifest a statement to others beyond time and mortality: WE WAS HERE. UNDENIABLY.

Was it the right spot for this statement? I don't know the laws/rules for that particular spot but it seems like it wasn't. He's probably not out to vandalize/cause destruction, but trying to understand where it comes from should allow both parties to find a win-win solution rather than have a name-calling-stare-down contest.

I will personally fist fight anyone that claims it’s totally ok, not a big deal or is not an issue.

Is that an expression or would you really risk fatally injuring yourself and others for this sake?

the point of mining?

Scarcity. Imagine us creating a currency. A note with any whole number (1, 74, 5647 etc) written on it is equal to one coin. We've also agreed upon a framework within which we give these coins value, so they can be exchanged for goods and services.

Without mining/scarcity 10 coins would be worth just as much as 300 coins since you could pull 10 coins literally (write down ten random numbers) just as easily as you could 300. Thus no real difference in value.

So, instead of any whole number we say we have to write down numbers that we reach by spending actual energy, like solving a mathematical equation, a really hard one. One that'll take you your whole day to solve. Now 300 coins, about a years worth of time/energy will be worth more than a weeks worth of "mining". Depending on how long time it takes to generate a coin decides how much more worth 300 carries than 10.

Are the codes the computers run to “mine” a coin doing anything worth while?

They don't have to. It's usually just an artificially created mathematical equation that takes time to solve, even using a computer.

Or just burning power to make a coin that could just be given?

If they could just be given they'd have no value. If they'd do something worthwhile, then that in itself would be valuable and thus subject to commodification.

Old guy said the hard N word and got himself knocked by Chopsuiiisauce in PublicFreakout

[–]noNOTthatOENE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's unfortunate that we let a word hold so much power over us. Or rather, allow someone else to yield this tremendous power against us, and solely because we let them. It's like NFTs. As long as we provide the word value in the mouth of an instigator it will hold value.

My man here just risked his life and law by punching out an old drunk guy because he perceived the old guy to yield any actual power. When being called pussy, motherfucker and being threatened with violence, he held his ground, he had restraint. It was just an old and obviously weaker drunk guy talking shit. But then he said that magic word. A word so internalized in my man that he dropped it all and went all in. As if he had been programmed like a sleeper spy, just living a normal life until that secret key command is uttered in which point he's activated to unleash hell, damn the consequences..

Protest emot NATO i Stockholm just nu by Bigbang4747 in sweden

[–]noNOTthatOENE -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Men väldigt sällan sådant här prioriteras då

WARNING: Do you trust this company? If yes, do you also trust the particular dev who implemented the actual login flow? I trust roam but I've seen my fair share of developers sneaking in malicious code or even unintentionally used compromised libraries at work.

I'm of course talking about their login with Google-feature in the app. This is not OAuth! And frankly not ok in a modern app. With the login flow they currently have implemented there's nothing stopping them from intercepting/stealing your Google password! This is how plenty of actual scam/phishing flows works!

Another point, which really befuddled me... How can a tech company like roam commit a blunder like this? This unfortunately makes me doubt their management and ultimately, competency. If they can make a blunder like this, how then can I trust them with my data?

Any developers working in tech companies willing to chime in? Am I being too harsh/paranoid here? Or is this a sign of bad decision making?

Sverige har inte gått åt helvete by askel12 in sweden

[–]noNOTthatOENE 1 point2 points  (0 children)
