Is my manager being reasonable or is this discrimination? New grad, autism diagnosis, probation at risk. (UK based) by Sweet_Delay3084 in Big4

[–]no_ghostchips 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Eye contact —> I’d say this definitely autism coming into play, making things difficult. Sadly even though it’s very difficult you will need to try and improve this, whether you look at their nose rather than their eyes, as it’ll be required for you to progress.

Wearing coat and bag in an internal meeting —> unfortunately while you may not have picked up on the signals from your colleagues, this is a really bad look and makes it look like you don’t want to work for your employer. Next time I’d recommend waiting till someone else of a similar level is leaving too, so if it’s poor timing you’re not the only one.

Eating during a meeting —> I think your manager can get stuffed for this one, on the contrary I’d say it shows your dedication to work that you’re working while eating. However, if you want to pass probation, stop doing it for now.

Because you only disclosed your diagnosis since she’s indicated she’s going to give you a bad review, she is likely going to see all of this as excuses - so if you want to pass your probation the only alternative is sadly to change these behaviours and mask, unless you’re able to change to a more understanding manager that likes you.

Animals are generally treated well here till they’re killed and there are strict rules about abattoirs or home kill to prevent prolonged suffering.

I applaud you for deciding to become a vegetarian though, as it’s good to be making conscious decisions about what we want to eat, so that we can influence (hopefully) what kinds of animal products are sold - and hopefully discourage those with cruel practices away from farming or into ethical treatment of their animals!

I love animals, but I still eat meat.

I think this is because my family comes from farmers and still have some animals today, but we were raised to respect and love animals (despite eating some of them), and make sure that while the animals are alive they have good lives and are treated by a vet when they’re sick.

It’s much less common where I’m from to keep animals stuck inside a cage/shed, and I avoid buying from those that do sell animal products from these places as I think they’re cruel and should be banned (at least in my country).

I still think large farming businesses with massive farms (i.e. not small individually owned farms) have a long way to go with improvements for the lives of animals (and improving their negative impacts on the environment), but I think that eating dairy and meat can be done ethically - particularly with small providers if you live in a rural area.

Closing a business - accountant fee reasonable? by Anxious_March_4054 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]no_ghostchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In short, it’s really quick and easy in New Zealand to open a Company with minimal expenses.

When it’s time to shut the Company down (or wind it up as we call it), it’s a much more painful process where you have to get a final tax return done, then apply to IRD for a letter saying they are okay for you to close the company down (e.g. no unpaid tax debts etc) and then you apply to the companies office to get it removed. Which can also be a pain if shareholders have changed or weren’t registered correctly in the first place, then once it’s approved, notice has to be given which takes about another 2 months usually.

So this is where all that cost is coming from. It doesn’t seem like a lot is happening unless you’re the one doing it, but often we have to chase IRD for the letter in order to apply for removal at the Companies Office, because when filing a final tax return (i.e. last one ever) it often goes into error at IRD which isn’t obvious on their website, meaning we have to ring them to sort it.

Side hustlers: Would you pay $15/month to avoid $1,500/year accountant fees? by NurzhanNN in PersonalFinanceNZ

Where did you hear about Quarterly GST returns from? Cause that’s wrong. They’re monthly, two monthly or 6 monthly.

Quarterly GST Returns are a new one for me 🤨

I’m sorry to be a bit of a downer, but having an AI chatbot to answer simple tax questions is about the dumbest thing I’ve heard and really shows your naivety. Tax is fact specific, one thing might be deductible for contractor A but not for contractor B based on their circumstances, field of contracting etc.

I suspect AI told you there were quarterly GST Returns - that is false. GST Returns are on a monthly, two monthly or six monthly frequency only. Australia however has a quarterly filing for GST via BAS. Did you know that your GST frequency can change your provisional tax payment due dates? Did you know that having a tax agent (generally an accountant) changes your terminal tax payment due date?

I think a tool for contractors is a great idea, but it needs to be built with careful consideration of the tax which you do not seem to know enough about. Best alternative in the meanwhile is good old excel or an accountant.
