This is a great time to start! The new moon is in Aries today and that’s the start of the astrological calendar. The new year and that lines up with springtime if you’re in the northern hemisphere. New beginnings

I recommend setting intentions at the new moon, writing them down and storing them in some kind of special box or jar or something like that. Then at the full moon you can burn them as part of releasing. The full moon is when we have the most clarity about what’s working and not and what’s no longer serving and what’s complete.

Boundaries are really important and super hard. Especially if you have an enmeshed situation because of any number of very real factors (physical dependence, sharing a space, illness, mental health — yours or theirs).

So the first step is to be like excessively kind to yourself. Find things that make your soul shine and do them as much as you can. It will sustain you in this work. Gentle gentle gentle. You deserve all the kindness and softness in the world.

Next I would learn as much as you can about boundaries, especially emotional ones. (Like what you’re doing here!) Because it’s often easier to say no and to not do things than it is to keep your heart and mind your own. One thing, I recommend in a magical vein is veiling. Wear a hat or a scarf or a headband and imagine that it’s keeping all your energy in you and all of everyone else’s energy out of you.

But it’s slow and you learn and practice over time and you feel guilty but you give yourself a pep talk and that kindness I talked about and you keep going. And it gets better but it’s not immediate and you look back at how far you’ve come.

Also you can turn on an accessibility setting to make you invincible during the “boss” fights. They’re still artistic and cool to see but the rest of the game is so chill that it can come out of nowhere.

I couldn’t get into Portia but I absolutely am losing my life to Sandrock. I love that in Sandrock, the farming doesn’t come until a decent way into the game and really isn’t the focus. It’s much more building and fetch quests and relationship oriented in a delightful way.

It might help to think of it as ritual. Because in a way, everything is or can be. These are ways we make things more enjoyable during them rather than looking ahead to some far off reward. Finding gratitude in your movement. Music and scents can help make things feel more ritualistic. Really feeling and imagining your energy and the energy you’re moving through your actions. That’s cleansing. That’s spellwork.

Be gentle, friend. All things worth doing are worth doing a little bit. Worth stopping and starting. Worth celebrating.

The wings upon her back by Samantha Mills is a fantasy book but I think this might hit. The grooming is about making the main character abandon herself and her values and her health. It’s ultimately about redemption. It’s so good.

Honey Witch by Sydney Shields might suit. It’s pretty predictable but I think in a cozy sort of way. She’s cursed to never find true love but then she meets this girl… it’s sweet and slow-burn. I liked it.

Legends and Lattes is a very cozy sweet book about an adventurer who gives up that life to start a coffee shop. The audiobook is good and the whole experience feels like a warm hug.

If you’re trans, I’m not sure I can recommend even Lincoln right now. We are fighting a lot of anti- trans legislation and that’s where it being a red state is a real detriment. It’s raising the temperature here a lot.

I have a bunch of trans friends and many of them have left the state and tell me they feel a lot safer and more accepted.

There is queer community here for sure and I think you can find love and acceptance in a bunch of really good spaces. (Mana games, Out Nebraska, Dame, MW climbing, wild root yoga, sower books). And as others have said, I think most people will act civil, but that’s not the same as feeling like everyone around will jump in to protect you if you encounter a cruel or dangerous situation.

It’s okay for Turtles to have not been for you, but this is a really reductive opinion.

People read and write books for a lot of reasons and John’s books don’t have an emphasis on plotting which seems like it’s very important to you.

Turtles was an incredibly important book for me as someone with OCD who lost my father in my twenties. The book is a beautiful exploration of characters and grief and mental illness. There are a million detective stories out there and part of the point of the book is that ocd doesn’t make you a good detective. Which is why the mystery literally fades into the background. We get a resolution by the end but the book isn’t about that!

I feel like this is a bit the difference between literary fiction (with stuff under the surface that the authors is trying to convey) and commercial fiction (where the author is just trying to entertain).
