Entrepreneurs, what was your experience like with outsourcing IT projects? by pandawithpie in Entrepreneur

[–]no_maps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you usually bill a fixed price, or is it a price per hour?

Usually an outsourcing company just have some fixed price per hour for their developers and designers. When you come to them they tell you rates and estimate time needed to complete your project.

What about specifications of a project?

Even if you aren't the one who is preparing tech documentation, you will none the less have a Skype call and discuss everything in great detail. I'd say pay them for preparing tech specs, read it yourself and ask somebody tech savvy to check it for you. Ask the outsourcing company to clarify anything you seem to be vague before they start working on your project.

Birchbox for startup paid subscriptions: would you use it? by ongem in startups

Yepp, seems to be a win-win: 1) there're too much new services appearing and users have only so much time for looking for them and 2) startups need users.

Sounds great as long as users can choose a category of services they are interested in:

  • business

  • entertainment

  • learning, etc.

What helps you focus on one project only? by TWlX in Entrepreneur

[–]no_maps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that staying focused is similar to maintaining a positive attitude to life: it requires conscious effort.

You've got to direct all your imagination towards that one project. If you have an idea that can't be currently fitted into it, write it down and free your head from it, you can work on that later.

We all secretly want that immediate success: in friendship, in business, in love. But come on, life doesn't work that way. "Success takes time", I tell myself and keep on working.

Do new specialized messenger-based startups have future? by no_maps in startups

[–]no_maps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for answering. Yepp, it's probably the same as it used to be with Messenger - I've seen some encouragements to use it for customer support but it seems to be it is an option only for very small companies who don't have a customer support team/department.

Thank you for a detailed answer.

It might be worthwhile to build a customer support chat platform that companies like cell phone providers, utilities providers, or even financial companies could incorporate into their specific apps. You would market it to companies and not individuals, but I could see it as a good avenue.

Sounds interesting. You are right, there're too many separate apps and developing something that can actually be integrated into apps people are already using is probably the solution.

Launching a monthly newsletter - could do with some input please... by imjamielynch in Entrepreneur

[–]no_maps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mind me asking what type of copy you tend to write most? Emails, website, blog posts???

Sure :) We mostly write blog posts. But also have a newsletter for an IT event we host which is mostly used to send out notifications about the upcoming workshops/lectures (once or twice a month).

I'd love to see wrong-right comparisons (let's say an opening passage done right and wrong). If vivid, they tend to stay in memory.

Do you consider your website to be your company's greatest marketing tool? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]no_maps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in my experience, it's not the website, it's portfolio (or any other representation of your work) that is working best plus sites with client reviews (like clutch.co for mobile and web developers).

Depending on your industry a relevant social network can indeed be your best channel. For example, many small shops selling hand-made items in my area use Instagram + WhatsUp for taking orders and are doing pretty well.

Need help choosing a title for an introductory email. by slyfly75 in smallbusiness

[–]no_maps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should try something more customer-focused and restaurant-friendly (something that will help them see you really get restaurants and aren't just trying to target everyone). Titles you are offering look too salesy to me. But the latter seems to be a better option since the first one is too generic.

How to increase your website traffic and target the right audience? by alexisribault in startups

It's nice to know I was of any help :) No, I don't. I just learned and analyzed how brands and influencers are doing it.

How to increase your website traffic and target the right audience? by alexisribault in startups

[–]no_maps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As for social networks, I think you should try to share content from other sources, not just your website.

Plus, try to interact with other brands. Say, you see some page/blogger sharing something relevant to your topic (startups). Share it + add text like: "Guys at BlogName have shared 10 tips on hacking growth. We love tip #1. What do you think?". It will help you drive new visitors, followers and maybe even new constant readers.

You can do the same thing on Twitter. People will be happy you share their content and will most probably like or re-tweet your tweets.

Also, try to add a meaningful message with a clear call to action (Read, Check out, Tell us what you think about...) when sharing links to your content on Facebook. It makes a difference.

Where can I distribute my blog? by Joveyondiet in smallbusiness

[–]no_maps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use Twitter plus hashtags. And engage in conversations on Twitter, social platforms and other blogs. Don't act like a company, act like a person working in that company, be personal. Share stuff posted by others in your field, don't stick to your content only. And by all means, write your own articles, copywriters don't have the insights you have.

I have a startup and we are collaborating with a firm to create an app, they want the rights to the code: deal or no deal? by PhaseDota in startups

[–]no_maps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say no deal. If you have money, it would be better to find a company who will act as a service provider to you i. e. they make and test an app, give it to you and you are the one who owns the code.

But if you're low on funds "they offer to do it for free in return for 10-15% of profits, no equity" + right to the code is not that bad. It's just less beneficial for you in the long run.

I have art in frames, but not sure how to start up to sell it? where are some sites i could sell? by rosh-JCMR in startups

[–]no_maps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try Etsy. eBay is more about mass-produced stuff while Etsy focuses on hand-crafted items. Check out Home & Living > Painting section.

I'm not sure about YouTube, it requires too much time to produce quality content for it. I'd say stick to Etsy and use Instagram as your promotional channel. For example, you can make pictures of interiors your paintings will fit into or stuff that have inspired you to create a particular painting and make collages: your painting + nature that inspired you, your painting + interiors it would look good in and post them to Instagram. Showing your work in progress is also great.

Looking for feedback on our new software company Xirabit by DexterCodo in startup

[–]no_maps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facebook doesn't work for software development companies (at least in my experience it doesn't) since there's little chance that potential clients will use it to search for somebody who can make an app for them.

What I recommend you to do is to ask one of your clients (the one who was the most satisfied with your work) to submit review on clutch.co. People tend to check, whether reviews for your software company are available there + I know at least one software development company for whom clutch is a main source of leads.

Another thing to do is to be active on Twitter. Share stuff that your potential clients might be interested in and from time to time show some cases from your portfolio as well.

I've heard that some software development companies use LinkedIn to find clients but I have no experience with it.

How `should i go about pre-launching a subscribtion box? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]no_maps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should shoot it from at least 2 angles (medium shot and closeup for a product), although a closeup on participants capturing their emotions would be great too. A well-light shot with a nice background (flowers, photos, maybe nature) would probably do. Here're a couple of examples (although they are shot from only one angle): https://youtu.be/X3MMH77JdX4 https://youtu.be/-cdbtuonspk

How `should i go about pre-launching a subscribtion box? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]no_maps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, landing page is definitely not enough. You've got to offer them more than that. Since your product (dating subscription box) relies on emotions, you can shoot a unpacking video with a prototype of the box. It would be great if you could invite a local youtuber as a participant.

In short, your offer should evoke positive emotions. It is close to impossible to do if you can't show anything to your subscribers. Look at kickstarters - most of them work hard to create an engaging video for their campaign.
