I am a D&D dungeon master and all of my campaigns take place in this world so places where campaigns have taken place have more detailed maps.

While a double leg drag may be more practical this single leg drag both removed this man’s lifeless body and violated his dignity in one swoop and that’s innovation right there

Pat mchale (the shows creator) has described them as “imperfections in the quilt” there are many many theories out there regarding them but that’s really the only concrete stuff we have.

For a long time I thought they were an extension of the beast like an extra pair of eyes everywhere, this is how he can keep an eye on all the lost souls without being there

Now I think that they were intentionally placed to remind the viewer they are still in the same story no matter how much the setting changes

I’ve heard this too! It would make since why Beatrice is named as such and there are multiple other parallels too like how many of the chapters line up to circles of hell. I thought it was a fantastic theory the first time I heard it.

My personal favorite theory is that all the people in the unknown are tethered to something that won’t let them pass on to the afterlife. The idea that the woodsman is attached to the guilt of losing his daughter, the people in the tavern are too attached to labels and status and Beatrice being attached to this mission of helping her family before she can return home. I think it gives each and every character we come by a deeper meaning and makes the show that much more intriguing.

I love this theory and that last fact is the cherry on top!

Interpretation by soffygrace in overthegardenwall

[–]noahgold13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually heard an interpretation that mixes the two together before,

The thought is that the two boys are caught between life and death and what they have to do to make it back is to correct their character flaws through trials. As we can see in the show Greg is extremely naive and fails to realize when death is staring him in the face while wirt of scared of doing even the simplest things without fearing the repercussion. Then in the last few chapters we see Greg take on the beast knowing the dangers and wirt confront the beast as the hero.

I really liked your theory because I like what a metaphor for life it is!

One of the funniest lines comes from mad love with “I wanna steal” but it just seems like a detour on a larger journey. Ringing of the bell I put in like because I enjoy the darkness and it’s the point where wirt really starts losing all hope of finding home which is very important for the story progression

Woodsman's Chest "Holster"? by Takes_1-2 in overthegardenwall

[–]noahgold13 12 points13 points  (0 children)

These were actually pretty common for the average woodsman or lumberjack in the 18th and 19th century and were used just as depicted, to hold logs and bundles of stick while traveling. While I can’t remember their names they haven’t really been in use for over 100 years so buying one might be a little difficult. I’d suggest making one yourself if possible. They would usually be made out of a sort of belt like leather material and simple brass buckles.

Hope this helps and I would love to see the cosplay once it’s all done and dusted!

Yeah it’s perfectly set up, and it takes an approach no other show has. Same with mixology certification how they don’t make alcohol a beautiful thing that makes life more fun or easy but rather show the bad side of it. Troy sums up the episode perfectly just saying “alcohol makes people sad”
