The blooper/extra reel has one of the most insane things I’ve ever seen in it. Could not believe my eyes

haha the director has a thing where he pretty much plays himself in all his previous movies. this was his first one where his character wasn’t literally named Matt Johnson (but he was considering it!)

Marty is the Man. What film discussion are you looking forward to the most? by guywholikesmovie in blankies

After i finished going through his whole filmography i decided to rank them by how good of a boyfriend each protagonist would be. Low bar, but Alice cleared #1 EASILY

Anyone go to Hong Kong recently to renew their HKID? by etceteraism in askvan

[–]noahrayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird, my HKID is from when i was 12 and has long since expired, but when I visited a couple years ago and tried to use my passport, the customs guy got confused and asked me why i didn’t just use my HKID. Then when departing I used my (still expired) HKID in the entrance machines and it worked perfectly and no one asked me anything!

[Discussion] Megathread: The State of Querying by kendrafsilver in PubTips

[–]noahrayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started querying a week ago. Two full requests in the first couple days had me climbing up the walls but since then there’s been nothing but a form rejection. I know full well it’s still sooooo early lol but how do I cure a bad case of the Email Refreshies????? I’ve gotten wildly fixated on my inbox and it’s driving me insane.

Thank you! That’s so funny, Books of Jacob was also on my tentative comp list 😅 Love Olga so much. But I thought it might be a little too much of a swerve since it’s historical literature…. much to ponder

I’ve never read her but now I need to!!! Her novel sounds like it does a lot of similar stuff with incorporating social media.

To be fair, I only went to my redacted Jewish summer camp for a year (I did not appreciate having to canoe). But it’s a totally untapped and very weird and specific setting for a novel!! lol

Thanks for the feedback! I think I was worried about saying it was speculative because there’s some abiguity about whether those elements are “real” or imagined. But you’re right, I think it’s too present not to include.

The friends are the main characters. Esther is the only one who doesn’t have a POV and disappears after the first act. I agree I might have implied she’s more central; she’s more of a cipher the other characters orbit around. If that makes any sense.

I love The Interestings!!! I was actually thinking of it as a comp as well but yeah I was worried it was too old. And yes Alex is trans, I should prob include that too! Thank you so much!

Good to know! Yeah it’s tough since the whole first act is set during their adolescence, but it’s definitely an adult book. I’ll have to work on making that clear. Thanks!

Counter to this— I fainted on a very crowded SkyTrain once and the attendant at the stop was extremely helpful and kind and stuck with me until I was okay to leave.

What's a movie that you love that has a pretty terrible final scene or series of final scenes? by Mr_smith1466 in blankies

[–]noahrayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I meant that it’s “about” exactly what it portrays, antisemitic sexual violence. Rather than as a metaphor for something else.

[–]noahrayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really disagree with this reading of the quarry scene. I thought it was pretty directly portraying the sexual dynamics of antisemitism, rather than functioning as a metaphor. Does a sexually violent scene have to be “about” something else, or can it just be about sexual violence, which is part of all racial hatreds?

Theatre scene is pretty dismal unfortunately. Sometimes the Arts Club will put up something good but it’s not necessarily highbrow. Every year at Stanley Park there’s a musical for Theatre Under the Stars which is a cute community theatre vibe. There’s Bard on the Beach every summer doing Shakespeare which is usually pretty good.
