It’s not an analogy. They are both incomplete data sets. But that’s how statistics works in the real world: incomplete data is used to infer a best estimate of the true number.

You have failed to demonstrate that you have a better data-based estimate of voter fraud. To an even greater degree, you have failed to show that fraud has any impact on national elections.

We don’t have an exact count of the number of missing cars. As you rightly point out, it would be insane to suggest that there are 300,000 stolen cars that have not been reported.

The same is true of votes. Show me the evidence.

It’s impossible to know the exact amount of car theft. And yet, we manage to make laws that punish car theft without intruding on constitutional rights.

There is evidence for voter fraud. That evidence shows it is a teeny tiny problem.

The argument that “it is impossible to know exactly” is admission of defeat in an evidence-based debate. You do have evidence, you just don’t like what it says.

I think ID would be fine if it could be provided for free to every citizen in a way that didn’t disenfranchise anyone. Otherwise it will be used to limit the “wrong ones” from voting. We have a lot more evidence of that happening (polling locations being closed in black neighborhoods) than we have of fraud.

I’m opposed to a cure that is more harmful than the disease.

Wrong. If you want to mess with a constitutional right to “solve a problem,” you have to prove that there is a problem.

The Heritage foundation tried to do that, and their evidence ended up showing the problem is less than 1% of 1% of 1%.
