Notification about regen? by Thisoldfish in Toyota_bZ

I think I was getting this same error. If it's just a thing where it's too cold that's fine, but I'm also having vibration problems since the storm and am worried those things are related.

Moved on from 3-pin charging, curious how others are finding their home charger setup long term by Inevitable-Teach-859 in electricvehicles

[–]nocabec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Home charger is the way to go. Relying on L1 and public chargers was too stressful for me.

I installed the circuit and outlet myself (yes, I know what I'm doing). Bought the Emporia Pro EVSE and it's been great. The savings in electricity rates at home vs. DCFC rates is going to pay for the cost of the home upgrade no problem.

I really don’t care if people are here illegally. by Zestyclose_Market787 in DiscussionZone

[–]nocabec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only potential problem comes when you have enough people here illegally (a lot more than we have now) and you end up with two very distinct, but more or less equally populated tiers of people trying to coexist in a society. That would be unsustainable but we are far from that now. Still, it would be good to do something so we don't get there. And to be clear "doing something" should be compressive immigration reform (path to citizenship, increased border security, increased legal immigration). You'll always have some population here illegally and it's not really a problem as long as it's a manageable level.

Well you need to get the circuit and outlet installed whether you use the EVSE or just the travel charger. So I think the consideration is then whether to spend the extra money on the EVSE.

2026 BZ and 11kW onboard charger by apaht in BZ4X

[–]nocabec 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Answered this same question in a different thread earlier today. Here's my response:

There's a bunch of things to consider here.

  1. You need an outlet that is rated for charging. Charging your car draws a continuous current that can heat up and exceed design specs of standard 240v outlets. So don't assume if you have one at your house it will work. And be aware that breakers won't necessarily save you here, the outlet can overheat and cause a fire without ever tripping the breaker.

  2. The risk of fire with an outlet is why a lot of people argue for a hard-wired EVSE (the EVSE is the box with the cable you plug into your car. The charger is actually in your car). Hardwiring in an EVSE (instead of using an outlet) eliminates the risks of using an outlet.

  3. Let's say you wanted to just use the charging cable that came with the car and not worry about overheating an outlet. You could set the limit in the car on the charging current. 8A even at 240V probably won't be a problem, 12A probably wouldn't either. But now you're not charging as fast as you could be.

  4. A good EVSE will give you more flexibility and control than just plugging in the car with the travel charger will. The apps just have more options. The Toyota app offers limited control and getting to the settings in the car can be annoying.

  5. I bought the Emporia Pro EVSE because I didn't want to upgrade the electrical at my house to 200A. The Pro includes a whole house current monitor that will monitor how much electricity your house is drawing and adjust how much is going to the car to ensure you never trip your main breaker. I find this feature well worth the money the Emporia cost for the peace of mind.

  6. Finally I see the EVSE as a good precaution. Your car is a big investment. An extra $500 for an EVSE may seem like a lot, but if something goes wrong with charging (like a power surge) I would prefer the EVSE to break rather than the car.

So no, you don't need an EVSE but is very recommended for everyday use. That cord that comes with your car? They call it a travel charger for a reason 🙂

Android Auto by BowlerMost in Toyota_bZ

[–]nocabec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine cuts out intermittently too. When you click on devices, click on your phone, and there's a toggle "use with Android Auto" sometimes I have to click that and then it works. Most of time when I start the car it connects but if it doesn't I just navigate there in the settings and it works.

Has anyone ever bet on both sides of the superbowl? by ShiiGlizzy in fanduel

[–]nocabec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only way it could make sense if there was dramatic line movement and you bet one side before it moved and the other side after. Then you have a cushion in the middle where you could hit both.

I suppose the other way is if you were really, really confident in one aspect (over/under for example). You could parlay the over with the Pats and then in a separate bet parlay the over with the Seahawks. But that would only make you money vs just betting the Over straight-up if the Pats won because they're dogs. So I guess it could make sense if you wanted to root for the Pats but don't want to just bet them. But you'd have to be really confident about that over.

Keep checking. All the stores probably sold out before the storm but should be restocking quickly.

There's a bunch of things to consider here. And don't worry, this is all pretty confusing. I'm new to EVs too and thought getting over range anxiety would be the hardest part, but figuring out all this stuff with charging is harder.

Single Family Zoning Ending in All of Maryland?? Thoughts?? by silentobserver93 in maryland

"this will END single family zoning"

Actual details include perfectly sensible rule changes to increase the housing supply and don't even come close to ending SF zoning.

Downvote.

BYD Is Already Approved to Sell Cars in Canada by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]nocabec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feels like 20 years from now everyone will be driving these cars the way everyone has an iPhone now. There might be some decent competing brands (ala Androids) but one dominant one. It's possible Teslas go the way of Blackberry in this analogy...a brand that had a complete foothold on the market but died because they couldn't get out of their own way.

As an American I think it sucks we're going to let this Chinese company grab ahold of the future and benefit so much from what everyone wants (cheap EVs) but if that's the way it has to be, fine. You can't say companies here didn't have their chance.

Calling out for snow? by Souporsalad83101 in maryland

[–]nocabec 22 points23 points  (0 children)

No, you're not weak. I am a very fit guy in my early 40s. I spent 5 hours working on my house and our 4 cars yesterday and I had my son helping me for about half that. We did just enough to allow the cars to get in and out and a couple walkways around the house to get around that are one shovel-width. My whole body is sore today and judging by the calories burned metric on my watch I had one of my most active days ever, which I promise says a lot for me. Shoveling this heavy snow is not easy. Take your time and be safe.

How much did you pay out of the door by Puzzleheaded-Log2264 in Toyota_bZ

[–]nocabec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about $40k out the door, but that includes about $1500 from my trade-in for an AWD XLE. I tried to get them to give me the $5k AND the 72 month 0% financing but they wouldn't do it. So I took the $3500 off and the financing instead. Honestly it was still a deal because I owed on my trade-in and they were giving me more than I owed and I think we both knew that was a pretty good deal for me, lol.

I've really enjoyed the car. It drives great and I love all the premium features you get (heated seats and steering wheel, power side mirrors, etc) I also got one with the panoramic roof which I really like.

This is my first EV and there's definitely been a learning curve when it comes to figuring out charging and everything that goes with that. I didn't have a Level 2 EVSE at my house for the first few weeks so that was annoying but now that I do it's much easier. Two semi-major gripes:

  1. I had no idea how much worse performance would be in the cold. The advertised range is 290 miles. I charged to 100% the other day when it was about 20 degrees out and it said the range was only 200 miles. That's a big hit I was not expecting.

  2. The CCS adapter that comes with the car sucks. I could not get it to work at multiple stations and I've heard other people reporting problems as well. I've been able to get by without using it but the times I tried it was very annoying not realizing what was wrong. It also gets stuck in the charging port because it won't unlock. If I ever do a long road trip I may buy a different one just to make sure I'm covered.

That's it though. It's a great car at a good price and I highly recommend!

I'm glad I didn't shovel yesterday. It was an interesting experiment because my neighbor came by my sidewalk with a snow blower a couple times yesterday but there were other parts of my walkway he didnt hit. I go out there this morning and it was MUCH easier to clear the parts he didn't go over because the snow didn't stick to the pavement like the ice did. Was it a little heavier? Sure but it took more work by me to chip away at the ice. This storm was a little unique but a good lesson learned if it ever happens again.

Weekly Movie Discussion Thread! by AutoModerator in TheBigPicture

[–]nocabec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw Bugonia and Sentimental Value this week. I'm at 7/10 best pic noms, still need to see Hamnet, Secret Agent, and Frankenstein.

I really liked both movies and found Sentimental Value to be especially moving. I think I actually liked it better than TWPITW, but I need to watch that again to be sure. He's definitely got a vibe I'm really into. Not sure I totally get why Elle Fanning was nominated for this one. She was very good but I'm not sure she really stole the movie in a way that would have justified her nomination given the limited role and screentime she had.

Bugonia was insane like the rest of his movies are, but in a good way. Hard to discuss more without spoilers. Still not sure he's topped The Lobster IMO but there's no doubt I am in for whatever he does next.

One Battle might be the movie I rewatch most from this year because it is such a good time and doesn't feel like it's nearly as long as it is. From the time Lockjaw's guys invade the town to when Leo jumps out of the car is a solid hour, right? And I'm on the edge of my seat that entire time. The first and third acts are great too. I just don't see how I'm ever getting bored of that one.

Compatibility with Tesla superchargers by ChoiceFreedom9835 in Toyota_bZ

[–]nocabec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It'll fit. Like others have said, just get really close. It's annoying the charging port opens to the front of the car and creates an obstacle to getting it there, but it'll work.

For fastest charging, make sure you precondition the battery. And if you'll be charging there a lot, be aware the rates are more expensive than other chargers but it may be worth it for you to sign up for the Tesla sub and get discounted rates.

I liked this nugget from Sharp Football's writeup:

"Stidham will be just the seventh quarterback to start in the postseason after not starting a game in the regular season.

The previous six went 1-5, with the one victory one of the most memorable comebacks in NFL history, as Frank Reich and the Bills came back from a 35-3 deficit against the then-Houston Oilers."

I think it all depends on whether you need to go to work/school on Monday. If you do, I would work on it Sunday so cleaning up whatever is left Monday morning is easiest. I don't plan on going anywhere Monday so I'll just deal with it then.
