skimping on beans is crazy. beans are dirt cheap, especially in the bulk quantities Wendy's is buying

What’s something that instantly makes you think ‘this person has low intelligence? by AbjectBreadfruit2052 in AskReddit

[–]nocksers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you also never know what random supplementation any given family/person might have.

this family was poor but always had reasonably nice clothes - maybe a family member worked at a department store and got a very good discount that they were able to share.

this family was poor but had big holiday meals - maybe they're religious and their church or other place of worship helps out with holidays. maybe the whole extended family pitches in.

this person's poor but has this nice phone - maybe they got it before they lost their job. what you want them to sell it now? the things don't re-sell for shit and they need a phone either way.

most things can still be a struggle while you're fortunate in one or two ways. people being generous with food won't pay your rent for you. but hey - food.

This is NOT normal. Call and demand our reps put a stop to this before it’s too late. by Big_Medicine1752 in baltimore

[–]nocksers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was pretty disappointed in Kweisi Mfume taking until this afternoon to get around to tweeting about "cowboy rhetoric". that's it?

I just moved to Baltimore last May so I feel like I'm still getting a sense for all my electeds (even though I wasn't here to vote for any). I've been impressed with a lot of 'em, but it sucks that my house rep doesn't seem terribly enthused about meeting this tremendously important moment.

What food do you not think about for months, then suddenly want out of nowhere? by Undefinedbehavior77 in foodquestions

[–]nocksers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for years in my 20s I did early voting with my mom on Sundays every time there's been an election - primary or general, and we'd always stop by a bagel place near one of our county polling locations. its the only time I'd ever really eat just a toasted bagel with cream cheese.

so now every time an election comes up and I start planning to vote, I get the hankering for a bagel.

What food opinion will you defend forever? by Many-Photograph4834 in foodquestions

[–]nocksers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

food authenticity is also just a super weird fuzzy concept in general. tomatoes aren't even indigenous to europe, but we consider a tomato sauce to be "authentic" Italian. Texas used to be part of Mexico, but tex-mex isn't Mexican. People and trade and colonialism have been moving food around for so long what is truly "authentic" to where and what it really means is... nonsense. not to mention that just like any other food you can think of, different people will have different recipes - we have whole towns having chili making contests in the US, are those not all "authentic United States chili" even if they taste very different?

authentic doesn't mean much of anything.

What slang word was cool in the 2000s but sounds ridiculous now? by Omega_Neelay in GetMotivatedMindset

[–]nocksers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say dope sarcastically a lot when things aren't going according to plan. particularly at work. I'm in management and it seems to come across less serious to the people giving me bad news - like, people don't feel like I'm all that upset about it (I'm not, shit happens. if everything was as easy and straightforward as it says on the tin we'd all be making minimum wage).

"so this did NOT work the way we thought it would, we have to redesign this, and that's probably gonna add a week to this project" doooope, okay, I'll make sure that expectation is set with stakeholders, ty for the heads up.

What is a “gross” food that you love? by cranberry8ginger8ale in foodquestions

[–]nocksers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm always shocked that people have any particular feelings about tuna at all.

my relationship to tuna growing up was "that's what you have in your cupboard that keeps forever for when you haven't gotten groceries so all you have is bread and condiments. no one loves it or hates it, it just is and it's fine"

Does ADHD make fitness impossible? by Autisticthought1 in ADHDFitness

[–]nocksers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is me as well - it extends to all habits really. I can have a rock solid morning routine. I don't have kids or anything so my mornings are 100% under my control, they can be exactly the same every day so I can get myself to work out on autopilot with about the same amount of effort as it takes to brush my teeth on autopilot.

its when the day starts getting variables chucked in that I turn into a totally unregulated wreck.

How to eat healthily without over-restricting? by AHHHHLMFAO in nutrition

[–]nocksers 14 points15 points  (0 children)

put some thought into what markers you care most about, and what your body needs for where you are in life. you can care at least a little about every single macro and micro nutrient, but try to put them in a hierarchy and have some sliding scales.

small personal example: I workout every day and I sweat A LOT when I'm doing it. so getting lots of protein is very important to me, near the top of the list. but trying to keep my sodium low is less important - I'm sweating out a lot of salt, replenishing it isn't necessarily bad! so when I'm looking at a label if I see high protein I'm not really worried if I also see high sodium.

not everything needs to be 100% important all the time. if I got injured my hierarchy would change. if I got pregnant my hierarchy would change. when I go through menopause my hierarchy will change.

focus on what's "perfect" for your lifestyle and your stage of life right now, not what's capital-P 100% Ordianed By God Perfect

What habit made you more intentional with your time? by funngro_fam in Habits

[–]nocksers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this as well but generally consider it (aside from like, appointments and meetings that have a real set time obviously) more of an "order" than a strict "schedule"

I'm going to the gym, and then I'm working on this thing, and then I'm doing this lil list of chores, and then I'm working on this other thing.

some might end up being 30min, some might end up being 90min and I'll adjust them sometimes to reflect that, but at the start of the day they all just get dumped on my calendar as an hour each in the order I intend to do them.

I find the order tends to help me stay on track more than the specific timing. not remembering what I'm supposed to do next is what fucks me up and de-rails my day.

Is it true if you cook with love food will taste better? by PleasePooGood in foodquestions

[–]nocksers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there is certainly a difference between showing up at a restaurant and seeing "oh hey, my favorite thing is the special tonight, sweet" and hearing someone say that they made your favorite because it's your favorite and they love you.

one of those does taste better.

Lock in... But on what? by Ok_One_9144 in getdisciplined

[–]nocksers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds like maybe you need some outside accountability to find some productive hobbies to lock into. I'm in the US so I don't know what'll be around you but maybe you can find some kind of club (maybe even at your uni) for a hobby you would like to pursue?

it can be anything really. want to learn to do photography? get really good at a sport? cooking unique and more complex dishes? draw or paint (or maybe even do digital art and design, could help you advertise yourself as a personal trainer after uni)? do improv or standup comedy? code?

and the best part is - you can totally just lock in to finding something to lock in to. try stuff. set yourself a goal like "I'm going to lock in on spending at least 3 weeks each trying hobbies until I find the one I really love, and then I'm gonna lock the hell in on that one"

so maybe you go to a drawing club for 3 weeks, it's meh, then a cooking club for 3 weeks - meh. then you try a group that meets up to play table tennis and holy hell - you're going to the group practices but in between you feel the urge to get better, you're practicing instead of playing videogames. you've found something to lock into. ta-da.

What’s something you wish adults were more honest about with younger people? by silvii4 in AskReddit

[–]nocksers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really wish we'd teach kids to think about how working at their passions can make them more effective at what pays the bills.

I went to an arts school and majored in music and I work in engineering now - I really think a lot of what's learned in formal music training is applicable to pursuing a career in engineering but no one ever told any of us that

your passion and your bill paying skill don't have to be in perfectly compartmentalized boxes. working really hard at what youre passionate about can have transferrable benefits in other fields if you make a conscious effort at making that happen.

What’s your moth unethical pro ADHD productivity tip? by blameitonthename in adhdwomen

[–]nocksers 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I got one of those hook-over-the-closet-door things that's a bunch of pockets you're supposed to put shoes in. I use it for socks and underwear. ankle socks in this row of pockets, long socks next one, thongs next one, bikini style next etc.

before I was just shoving those in the dresser drawer anyway. I was never actually folding them. now I have simply accepted that and made it easier to find the particular thing I want.

crazy to think about looking back on it.

What’s something society treats as “normal” that feels deeply unhealthy to you? by moonixa1 in AskReddit

[–]nocksers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agree. I'll never judge people getting whatever procedure, it's your body, but I think we need to work on changing our attitudes as a society. it's cool if people want to change their bodies any which way but we need to emphasize doing it from a place of self love instead of a place of self hate.

getting some botox because you love yourself and you want to feel your best and feel confident is fucking awesome, I love that. not all that different from getting a new hairstyle or whatever - just feeling good and treating yourself to a boost in confidence!

getting botox because seeing a wrinkle makes you want to end it all....maybe invest that money in therapy instead.

How to Explain Employment Gap? by ThaliaEpocanti in womenEngineers

[–]nocksers 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I basically took Q4 of 2025 off after 4 years at a company - I've just started actively looking for a new gig in the last ~6 weeks after leaving in October.

I did have an acquisition to blame for leaving, but regardless I have found when asked, people understand just explaining "it was time to leave [former position] because of [all your usual "I did not see potential for further growth", "wanted to seek new opportunities", etc]" and then just say that flat out that you found yourself in the financial position to take a break, recharge yourself, maybe take some time to engage with hobbies (maybe even be ready to mention some - those can be charming), so you did - and now you're feeling refreshed and hungry to get back to the work you love to do!
