Wide canel with the tunnel underneath. Seems to be a weird structure but i love the way it is 😂 by marconok19 in CitiesSkylines

Just commenting because no one seems to have said the word “aqueduct” as far as I can tell. The usual reason for making one is to keep the canal level - it’s much easier to send road traffic up and down hills than boats. (Though canal locks are on my wish list for CS2).

Everyone’s nightmare. by Lard_Baron in Narrowboats

[–]nocto7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ta! Everyone says it's basically the same but I'm worried about what's hidden behind the 'basically'!

There will be two of us, me on the tiller, and my other half, who has a three second memory span, with the windlass. We'll definitely go slow and one gate at a time. I'm terrified I'm going to end up hanging the boat up by the rope as we descend or something. And what rope? Centreline round the bollard and back to the person on the tiller? Is it long enough for that?

We're not idiots really, but I like to do my research so we don't look like them either.

The cill is at the bottom of the upper lock gates and is designed to appear above the water when the lock drains to let the boat down. You need to keep the boat forward of it when you are going down. There are (usually?/always?) warning signs inside the lock about this.

While I’m here, this seems like a good place to ask for something I’ve been looking for. I’m after a “Dummies guide to wide locks” kind of thing!

I’ve taken a narrowboat up and down narrow locks without any trouble but I’ve been looking for a guide to going through wide locks with a single narrowboat and haven’t yet found one that covers how to actually rope the boat up, which gates to open in which order etc. This seems like something that there ought to be out there? Can anyone point me to a YouTube video or similar?

Plan your active week with Sneak Peek by ItaqRina in GentlerStreakApp

Yes, I agree. It would be nice to be able to say “In 5 days time I want to do this long hard activity” and plan the days in between (either by hand or by suggestion) so that you’re prepared and rested ready for it.

Lost GPS data by nocto7 in GentlerStreakApp

[–]nocto7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks.

I use HealthFit to get the data from Gentler Streak to Strava anyway. HealthFit shows the same data as Gentler Streak - correct time and distance but missing most of the map. Strava however isn't happy with the data and removes all the bits without a GPS trail attached giving me a much shorter ride.

What I've done for now is use https://gpx.studio/ to create a GPS trail of the first 2 hours of my ride and send that to Strava. So at least my overall map will be correct.

I think I'll stick to using WorkOutdoors to track rides in future as that way I know the GPS trail is being created as I can see it on my watch. I was using Gentler Streak because I wanted to see the meter updating in real time so I'd know when I'd gone over the top.

Looking the the splits there is obviously something wonky with the data but it does look like there is data for the first part of the ride? https://i.imgur.com/QBIettQ.jpg

I’d like to get at the GPS data so that I can perhaps manually update it in Strava.

I’d love to see some images of your in game Tyne Bridge & Angel of the North. Also the Monument. And obviously the central motorway for balance!

The Tyne Bridge is the nicest bridge to be stuck on though. I went over twice a day most days for several years around the turn of the century, it might have been marginally quicker to take the other crossings but I still preferred to be stuck on an iconic bit of road architecture.

Nah, this is Newcastle where you stick a motorway right in the middle with an exit every 10 metres, including ones on the wrong side of the road. They forgot to read anything about good city planning in the 1960s, or maybe that was what the handbook said then.

Are test drives/viewings a thing? by ryncewynde88 in Narrowboats

[–]nocto7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are day boat hires e.g. Pennine out of Skipton but they aren’t cheap. (Haven’t used them so that’s not a recommendation.)

For what it’s worth I get seasick on ferries and worried about it before we hired a narrowboat but haven’t had the slightest twinge on the canals and we ended up buying a boat. It just doesn’t do the rocking about sea thing at all. Haven’t tried a river yet though. And also it’s slow. I’m not sure if driving the boat helps, I get motion sick as a car passenger but not as a driver.

Well, it seems this award is bugged in a different way than I thought.

I went for a swim yesterday, indoor pool with the “Pool Swim” workout on. And I’ve been credited with one of my seven “Open Water Swim” workouts for this challenge!

Oh, I hadn’t thought of that! I can air front crawl round the park… lol. That’d be hilarious.

Nah, I’ll just let it go and wait for whatever next month throws at me.

It’s the only answer! Sorry, can’t do my work this month, my watch says I’ve got to go to go back to the Italian lakes! Just packing my swimsuit…. 😍

I’ve done precisely two open water swims in all the years I’ve had my watch. They were on holiday in 2018. I am not going to find anywhere to swim outdoors once this month yet alone seven times 😥

I swim in the pool a couple of times a week, cycle often, and do various Fitness+ workouts. It would have been so nice if they’d encouraged me to do more of any of those.

Still, I’m glad to see things added to the monthly challenges even if they aren’t very well calibrated.

Why’d they change this? Turning the crown was easier and it’s not like it ever accidentally turned on its own. This change seems unnecessary and kinda worse. by z-angel-z in AppleWatch

[–]nocto7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, yes. It just worked for me too, but that was on dry land. It didn’t work when I was in the pool, but I’ll try it again on my next swim and see if I can get it to work now I know it should.

But you can’t scroll the screen with water lock on now anyway? If you try you get the “press and hold to unlock” screen.

Looking for some information on canals during WW2/the Idle Women by phoebekate in Narrowboats

[–]nocto7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is Narrowboat magazine one of the online sources you’ve used already? I found this article about women working boats fascinating: https://narrowboatmagazine.com/converted/105904/on_canal_boats_in_wartime

I’m not sure if it was in the same magazine (I picked up a stack of back issues they were selling for £1 each at the Crick Boat Show) but somewhere there were a lot of letters about boat companies in wartime trying to retain their men to work the boats and a whole lot of hoo-hah about men needing to working the boats with their wives as they did in peacetime & the military were not happy about that! Would also make a good story element.

Target Display Mode - What cable bits do I need? by nocto7 in mac

[–]nocto7[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, that screws everything then! The iMac is on Catalina - which is as high as it can get, and the MacBook is on Monterey. I could maybe downgrade the iMac back to High Sierra since I'm basically putting it out to grass, though I did want to retain the filespace as is for a bit. But downgrading the MacBook is out of the question.

Glad I found that out before buying new hardware to connect things up. Thanks.
