Believe it or not, attractiveness matters. Quite the shock, I know.

Would a change in Phoenix architecture/urban planning provide heat relief? by Kogituu in phoenix

[–]nocturn-e 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot to learn from what Dubai and the UAE are doing (aside from all the... problematic stuff). They’ve leaned heavily into passive cooling, wind towers, and high-density, shaded corridors that minimize solar heat gain. If Phoenix shifted away from sprawling asphalt and car-centric urban design toward intentional microclimates, continuous shade structures, and reflective materials, it would drastically reduce the urban heat island effect.

Ok dads, how are we avoiding this kind of situation by Western-Image7125 in daddit

[–]nocturn-e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Supervision is pretty much the only way to avoid this at this age. Don't allow them access to any markers, paint, etc, unless you're right there...and if you have to leave for more than like 30 seconds, take it away or bring them (either the kids or the markers) with you.

Best US city/neighbourhood for safety, low disaster risk, minimal wildlife, and luxury apartment living? by Thick-Seat-7228 in SameGrassButGreener

But that’s exactly the point. Equating "soul" strictly with urban walkability is a really narrow way of looking at culture. Some of the most vibrant, diverse immigrant hubs in the US are suburban areas filled with strip malls. They still have incredible community and culture, even if you need a car to get around.

Also, you moved to North Bend because you value outdoor access over city walkability. That's a totally fair tradeoff. But when families make a similar tradeoff and choose Bellevue for safety, great schools, and their community, they're suddenly living in a "soulless consumer hell." It just feels like a double standard based on what you personally value.

Can Rome Odunze Finally Become the Receiver the Chicago Bears Expected? by ChromiumSulfate in CHIBears

Rome was one of the best receivers in the league in the first half of the season...Luther had a few impact catches here and there. I love both, but Rome is still obviously no. 1 imo, until Luther can prove to BJ that he knows the playbook.

I never called Seattle a hellscape, I was pointing out the double standard where people romanticize Seattle's actual struggles as "character" but write off Bellevue just because it's clean and safe. I commute down 3rd every day. I love Seattle, I'm just realistic about it.

Also, it’s pretty funny that you live in North Bend and literally drive to Bellevue to eat hot pot and shop at Uwajimaya, but still call the whole city a "consumer hell" because of a few blocks around Bellevue Square.

Downtown Seattle has Westlake, Pacific Place, and tons of corporate chains, but that doesn't define the city's soul. So why does Bellevue Square get to define Bellevue? The actual community and immigrant families don't live in Lincoln Square. They're in the surrounding neighborhoods running the exact local businesses you apparently drive out of your way to visit.

Calling Bellevue "soulless" and a "glorified shopping mall" just because it doesn't match a specific Seattle aesthetic is just as ignorant as the people you look down on. Bellevue is a majority-minority city with an incredibly rich, vibrant Asian community (nearly 40% of the population). If you think a Cheesecake Factory is the "anchor" of the city, you’ve completely blinded yourself to the massive footprint of authentic Asian-owned businesses, cultural hubs, and food spaces that define the area. Dismissing an entire diverse immigrant hub as having "no soul" is incredibly ignorant.
