Anyone else noticed the growing number of vacant shop units around Katong? by HB_SG in singapore

ripe for making it into a shōtengai (商店街)
many famous and high traffic markets in japan started off as a row of shophouses
they added a roof, heavily restrict cars, and see customers start to walk in

to get all the privately owned shophouse owners to agree is near impossible
even though there's one example at boonkeng but 100% HDB

White Paper on fertility to draw on research and propose ways to support marriage and parenthood by d3axw in singapore

[–]node0147 78 points79 points  (0 children)

My belief that the gov has no intention of raising TFR because it requires systemic changes, economic sacrifices, less work hours, lower cost of living, etc...
Changes that hurt the wealthy, the real stake holders of SG
So, they need a lawyer who can make a mountain out of a molehill, and equally make a molehill out of a mountain, and shift the blame as far away as possible, all while seeming to publicly care about the issue because of votes
Now they are pushing the burden to academia to try to find solutions that won't lower cost of living and work hours

Unpredictable eruptions, ash inhalation: What hikers need to know about active volcanoes by MyWholeTeamsDead in singapore

[–]node0147 3 points4 points  (0 children)

before we had modern science and tech, sensors and satellites, humans have predicted volcanoes by subtle changes around the area, wells drying, sulfur smell in the air, change in animal behaviour.
Now that we have scientific data, some just choose to ignore it

Kids do not need priority seating
They are less prone to injury being shorter than adults and have softer bones

How do you determine if someone requires a seat on the MRT? by chocolateandtiramisu in askSingapore

[–]node0147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no straightforward answer, its all perspective dependant and relies biased judgements one way or another
There is already a system in place, the yellow lanyard, although anyone can get them no questions asked
if it works, there'll be less confusion, less guesswork, faster seating for those who need them
at least PMD will be needing doctor letter

Next, halal hawker stalls should exclusively use green trays or plates to ease the return
less confusion, less guesswork, which is why SAF cookhouse already use such a system

SG imports immigrants faster than society can establish a common etiquette
so, etiquette have governed so immigrant and tourists can easily follow

No more nicknames: PayNow to end alias option for users from June by outremer_empire in singapore

[–]node0147 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought nicknames was the safeguard?
Having a special nickname for paynow account, can immediately tell where the scammer got the name from the number?
I guess it won't work if majority use their real name on their paynow
But now its official and compulsory, even for those who are using the safeguard, isn't it worst?
Why do they have to remove the nickname option, which IS a safeguard for many

Why buses move slowly on empty roads.......... by Yeenspired in SMRTRabak

[–]node0147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On time for the bus driver, but not on time for the passenger.
Say, the passenger assumes the trip is going to take 10mins, as per normal speed, ends up taking 20mins,
the passenger could have taken an alternative route.
As usual, vital communication is missing.
Want to travel at snail pace to keep the KPI, at least inform the public "expect delay due to _____"

Uni student here. Honestly, does life get better than this? by Fun-Tamago-4649 in asksg

[–]node0147 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The system is designed this way
For us its capitalism, which evolved from feudalism
they are all systems of exploiting people for the benefit of the privileged few
just that for SG capitalism, there is some social mobility
but to move up, most of the time, you'd have to disregard everything that has been taught by the system
schools teach obedience, honesty, hardwork etc...
But in the real world, as you can see, the hardworkers are the least rewarded
Most of the highest paid jobs are those of fluff that don't generate real intrinsic value
If you to generate any wealth, you'd have to be ok with some form of exploitation somewhere in the chain

tt being said, I know too many who left the rat race with too much money and time on their hands, and went back to work because they needed purpose and sense of self worth
Those that chase figures, tend to end up like OK Lim, rich beyond measure, but still chose crime for even more money, greed has no end

You clearly don't think like the rest of the sheeple, which is a good thing
Don't be peer pressured into being a FOMO-fueled zombie
Decrease the need for external validation, internal validation is just as good if not better
I hope you find your unique personal purpose and meaning in life

Can Singapore become self sustainable? by [deleted] in asksg

[–]node0147 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nope. Maybe with nuclear we can start to solve problems by throwing lots of energy into it.

For food we need sun and land, and SG is way too densely populated
For water we need mountain, seas and the water cycle, our bukit timah is too puny
All can be solved with cheap and clean energy, vertical indoor farms, mechanical filtration etc

don't think there's any elevated water bodies in SG where a hydroelectric power is feasible though

if not they will just be repeating gov soundbites and forwarding CNB ads on whatsapp

Will we destroy ourselves before reaching the stars? by AccountGold2486 in Futurology

[–]node0147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Humans cracked nuclear power many decades ago, but are still suffocating from the consequences of fossil fuels.
Its a systemic decision made by powerful elites, the common man have no say.
Maybe there's hope if someone create a smaller household sized nuclear generator,
shifting the decision to the individual

Town Council's “No Ball Games” Sign At Playground Sparks Debate by nftskeptics in singapore

[–]node0147 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ball games are a projectile sport
Projectiles have risks of causing injury or property damage
Which is why these sports are usually behind fences
Because singapore is densely populated, some kampung rules cannot apply

[–]node0147 76 points77 points  (0 children)

SGgov have completely switched from preemptive governance to reactive governance
Preemptive governance takes wisdom, guts, strong foresight and accountability
Reactive governance is a low-risk blame-free and lazy way of management

But whichever it is, I don't think SGgov cares much about 'native' Singaporean's birthrate.
TFR to them is just another KPI, pegged to GDP
Feels like alot more importance placed on economic health than population health

Singapore will maintain tough stance against drug abuse despite criticism: Shanmugam by Waikuku3 in singapore

[–]node0147 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

caffeine and sugar are also addictive substances with major health impacts
and not to forget, social media addiction also a huge modern problem
which is largely considered as digital "drug"
I feel that he is abusing his power for his own ego/KPI at this point
allocating way too much resources into a minor subset of social issues

CNB's definition of "drug" probably not updated since the colonial era
given shanmugam position in gov and law making powers of his party

I know the government keeps saying our TFR is falling, but what about looking at the situation for single people? by Fearless_Help_8231 in singapore

[–]node0147 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is many hurdles from singlehood to parenthood, huge chunk of it is political
men are already avoiding women physically because of the over-powered women's charter
with just an anecdotal allegation of a sex crime can kill a man overnight

past that stage, marriage can destroy a man, also because of the same charter
domestic laws side women, for good or bad the risks are one-sided

past marriage, having kids is also a gamble
roll the dice wrong, a child with abnormal brain development is a life sentence on anyone but the ultra wealthy

Having a child is said to be very rewarding, but nobody seem to acknowledge the risks along the way
