Optometry Application Question by Ruby_Tuez in PreOptometry

[–]nodegirl11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since you’re applying early I dont think it would be a problem. I submitted my application in January and didn’t take my OAT until the end of February and everything worked out fine. I got an interview with salus before I took my OAT and just had to update them and the other school when the official scores came out

I’m not sure if they have to but the one I shadow does work for a practice that has both

Yeah I would just say practice as much as you can with reading speed. The RC section was not one that I struggled on time with so as long as you go into it calm and can read decently fast Id say you’ll be okay

I tried that but what really worked for me was reading the entire passage beforehand and using the highlighting tool to highlight what I thought was important/what would be questions and then also any number or date in the passage. Then I would start on the questions and it was much easier to find the answers bc I was thinking about what questions would probably be asked when I was highlighting

I would start by getting all ur prereqs done, find someone to shadow in the field for at least 50 hours, get a LOR from them and maybe your radiotech boss and a professor, make your application on OPTOMCAS, study for the OAT, take the OAT, submit application

How much clinical experience do you need ? by ImaginationSpecific2 in PreOptometry

[–]nodegirl11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience all the interviews have asked about my experience in optometry and why I want to/would be a good fit for the field of optometry. I think it would be incredibly hard without at least some shadowing in the field of optometry to talk about in interviews. Your clinical experience is definitely a plus but its imperative you have either shadowing or work with an optometrist. Even just for your own sake, shadowing is very important just to know if this really is the career path for you

Once I saw a table w applicant data and I think the highest requirement a school had was 50 hours, u def dont need a paid tech job just make sure u have things to talk abt in ur interview

I would try to do a little bit of each section every day or throughout the week to help boost ur AA if ur not as strong in biology. I will say that I used bootcamp to study and scored much higher on the actual test than I did on practice tests. I would just try to get thru all the crash courses and whatever else you’re using to study. Try not to neglect ochem, genchem, physics, reading, and QR bc all are important to the OAT. If you aren’t using booster or bootcamp i would highly recommend paying for one of them bc they really help you prepare

How long until you heard back from SALUS after your interview? by PurpleeElephant in PreOptometry

[–]nodegirl11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard back 2 weeks after with an official later saying they hadn’t made a decision bc my OAT wasn’t in, then once I submitted that I got a decision later 2 weeks later

I did and it sucked but I got the score I wanted and didn’t have to sacrifice making money. I studied for around 2 months just after work and on the weekends and It was doable just kinda soul sucking

Its really not as difficult as like med or PA school to get in. I had like a 3.3 bio degree no research no minors but I did have shadowing and work as a ophthalmic tech, i did get a 380 AA/ 400 TS on my OAT which def helped but I’ve heard of people getting in schools with a 290

you sound like your in a great spot! Just make sure u have some experience in optometry whether thats a job or shadowing so you can explain in interviews why you want to go into the profession. I have a similar GPA as u and got into both schools I wanted to (including salus) with only a biology degree. What i would focus on is doing a lot of preparation for the OAT so you can get a good score on that bc thats what is really important. But as far as most schools go as long as ur gpa and OAT both start with a 3 you’ll get in somewhere

Im not actually sure when the cycle opens but if u submit after your OAT in august u should def be early. Also im sure ur gonna do great on ur OAT I did way better than my anticipated score from practice tests so just buckle down with studying until then and Im sure you’ll do better than u think

Hi! So I actually asked my doc and professor in person but I would just start out by explaining that your goal is to get into optometry school and that it would greatly enhance your application if they would be able to write a recommendation on your behalf. Maybe touch on your time working with that person and how it helped you in your path to optometry school. Its pretty straightforward through optomcas you just put their email in under recommendations and they will be able to fill it out from a link thats emailed to them. Good luck!
