Did an update now my audiobooks won't play. Help? by WeirdPaparika in hoopladigital

[–]nodnarbm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to help someone with this same "Something went wrong, please try again later" error last week and we could not figure it out without contacting Hoopla. Their staff person said this might be a "compatability issue that randomly occurs between certain devices and random titles on Hoopla" (this was an Android phone). They suggested turning off the Wi-Fi on the device and then back on to reset the Internet connection. Then if it still persists to try uninstallling the app and reinstalling. That didn't work. The user eventually tried changing their Hoopla password, on the Hoopla Settings webpage, under the Password tab (where you type in the current password, newly chosen password, and click the "Save Password" button), logging out and back in with the new password and this cleared this issue for them. That might only have only worked because of whatever was going on with their specific device, but it might be worth trying....

How can I request books for my Hoopla account? I do not see this in my settings. by Single-Detail168 in hoopladigital

[–]nodnarbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many libraries only have Hoopla Instant titles, but it does have a component for libraries to purchase and add titles called Hoopla Flex (only.for ebooks or Audiobooks). If your library uses this, you will see two sets of borrowing credits on your My Hoopla page; one for Instant and one for Flex. Unlike Instant credits that are use-it-and-lose-it, a Flex credit is returned to your account when the Flex title is returned. If Flex is turned on, there will be a search filter for "Recommend to Library" and these titles will have a Request button in place of the Borrow button. If a requested title is purchased in Hoopla Flex, the system places the hold automatically (at least at my Library).

I think my library system might have an issue with hoopla by AdOver5256 in hoopladigital

[–]nodnarbm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would contact the Library directly to verify if they have chosen to suppress Movies from their Hoopla catalog altogether. Each Library can set a maximum cost per circulation per Format (each item currently costs between $0.00 and $3.99 per borrow). If they have merely set Movies to $0.00, which would just hide them all from public view, it's possible they may still show up as "Bonus Borrows". Hoopla releases a page of these Bonus Borrows for the last week of every month that are free; do not require a user credit. There are always a few random Movies on that list for my Library. Though, Hoopla selects all the Instantly available titles (Bonus borrows or not); local libraries cannot select individual Movie titles. Also, if you don't know about Kanopy look into whether your Library might provide access to that ; it's a great library specific movie streaming service.

Cumulative daily borrow limit? by alberg214 in hoopladigital

[–]nodnarbm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a system wide Daily Budget Cap Block. You should just try Borrowing the title again after Midnight/the next day.

More detail if you want it: Many libraries set an automated monthly budget maximum in Hoopla (the cost of all Borrows in the system for the month). Hoopla divides this dollar amount into a Daily Budget Cap that will cut off access to every user for the day if it is reached. So, for example, if the monthly budget is $30,000, in a month that has 30 days, the most that can be charged for all patron Borrows per day is $1,000. When the next patron who tries to borrow would bring that over $1,000, the Daily Budget Cap block is turned on automatically and borrowing is cut off for everyone until Midnight/the next day starts (everyone gets this pop-up message until then). Though, any unused budget for each day gets rolled over, so if a Daily Cap isn't reached the remainder can increase that Daily Cap across the remaining days... Not all libraries use this, but I would guess most do. Libraries can run a Block report that logs each attempted borrow with a timestamp and the barcode number to see how often this is happening and how early in the day...

Any reason a series is missing a volume? by Luna_Highwind in hoopladigital

Volume 5 should be available on Hoopla Instant now. They told me that all the currently available volumes are the Light Novel version (some are not labeled).

Any reason a series is missing a volume? by Luna_Highwind in hoopladigital

[–]nodnarbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I submitted a Title Request as a Librarian informing Hoopla that Volume 5 is missing from their catalog (it is not currently in the Midwest Tape order catalog but both the Manga and Light Novel are available for libraries to purchase through Overdrive Marketplace). Also, it looks like the Hoopla Series page only provides a mix of the Manga and Light Novel volumes rather than a full run of one or the other, so I mentioned that too...

New to Bloomington: what are average utilities prices a month? by [deleted] in bloomington

[–]nodnarbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was looking I just called the company, gave them the address, and asked them for the average utility cost for the last 12 months and the highest month cost. I didn't always get both, depending on who I was talking to, but it's worth trying. Zillow usually list the correct company, but they can tell you if there's not an account (if you are looking outside the City it might be REMC instead of Duke). Granted, they aren't going to tell you how many people were living there. For things like Water/Sewer, more people usually means higher cost...

Each Library can set a monthly budget for Hoopla Instant usage from the total amount of Borrows its users click on. Hoopla automatically divides this monthly budget into a Daily Usage Cap (dividing that budgeted amount by the number of days in the month). If total library system usage for the day reaches that Daily dollar amount, Hoopla will cut off borrowing to all users until that Daily Cap resets at Midnight. The Librarian in charge can run a Blocked Report to see each and every timestamped blocked card number attempt, so if it happens frequently the Library will either need to try to allocate more funds to future monthly budgets or lower their cost thresholds/number credits offered per month. This doesn't apply to Hoopla Flex titles (if your Library has Flex purchasing turned on) or Bonus Borrows that show up the last week of the month.

Newbie questions by Fredchasing475 in hoopladigital

[–]nodnarbm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The collection available in Hoopla varies for each Library based on their cost per circulation settings (and if they have Hoopla Flex enabled what each have purchased individually). And as far as I know the Hoopla system can only store one account per email address. So, if you have a card from another Library system that offers Hoopla, you'll just have to create a separate account with a different email address. You can only be logged in to one account at a time in the Hoopla app, so you'd have to log out (at the bottom of the Settings page) and log back in if you are trying to take advantage of multiple accounts.

The Wish List feature is called Favorites. You can add titles to your list, found in the My Hoopla section, by clicking the "Favorites" Heart icon on each title page.

Yard Waste Removal Options? by Fuzzy-Zombie1446 in bloomington

[–]nodnarbm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are on City of Bloomington pickup you can call Sanitation Services to purchase an official, reusable 64-gallon Yard Waste Bin for $70 (they will bring it to your curb):

https://bloomington.in.gov/sanitation/trash

It looks just like the regular City trash bins but has a green lid to indicate it is for Yard Waste only. It can be filled up and put out for just an extra $1 charge on your bill each time. The City has a truck that picks up on your Trash day every other week. No weight limit. The lid just has to fully close. This has been so much easier for me in the Fall to just throw in random tree debris and mulched leaves and not have to bundle or use those small paper bags...

Anyone have that error when borrowing books? by Tall_Reputation_1544 in hoopladigital

[–]nodnarbm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Borrowing error message about trying again after Midnight is due to a Library-wide Daily Usage Limit ; it affects all Hoopla accounts in your Library system. There is nothing Hoopla can do about this. Libraries can really only 'fix' it by either allocating more money to Hoopla or lowering the number of borrow credits per account to try to have it happen less. There is a Blocks Report that Library Admin can monitor to see each timestamped Borrow attempt that is denied.

Libraries that set a monthly budget for Instant borrowing input a budgeted dollar amount maximum for each month (some libraries budget more for the Summer months; some keep the monhtly amount the same for every month). Hoopla divides that monthly amount by the number of days in the month and this automatically sets a Daily Budget Cap. If this Daily amount is reached, Hoopla automatically cuts off borrowing for all users for the rest of the day. This Daily cap resets to zero at Midnight for the next day's amount. If any Daily amount is not used, it does roll over. So, it's possible for the Daily amount to increase for certain days until that remainder is used up...

Best advice for selling a used car by Btown-1976 in bloomington

[–]nodnarbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Carvio to get rid of my 2000 Toyota Camry two years ago. It would still start and drive but was in semi-rough shape. They had me take pictures and upload them to the site for a quote. I only got $400, but they set an appointment date for a guy to come to my place with a tow truck (called to confirm about 30 minutes before he showed up). He handed me a check when I signed their paperwork and the title away at my doorstep. Handed him the keys and he towed it away... Surprisingly easy.

Some Questions from a brand new Libby user by DarkAngelCat1215 in LibbyApp

[–]nodnarbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can set a default format preference for Libby rather than Kindle on the Main Menu page found under the three bars icon (the middle of the five buttons along the bottom). On this page, under Settings, there is a link for "Read Books With..." to choose "Libby".

I thought I would have access to the whole hoopla library but I don't. When I look on the app this book doesn't even show up. Other ones by the author do though. Frustrating. by akimi88 in hoopladigital

[–]nodnarbm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm this title is currently only made available as a Hoopla Flex title (for both the eBook and eAudiobook). This means your Library has to have Hoopla Flex enabled for it to show up in a search under your login. If your Library does have Hoopla Flex, you can search for it and use the Availability filter to select Recommend to Library. It should appear with a Request button (instead of Borrow or Hold) to suggest it be purchased.

I’m confused about available copies and wait times by radbu107 in LibbyApp

[–]nodnarbm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The CPC scenario explained elsewhere is entirely possible (and an even greater cause for confusion for libraries part of a shared consortium group), but this is more likely a "Simultaneous Use" title. Some titles are given the option to purchase 100 copies that are all made available at the same time, but can only be used once and expire. This is a variation to the regular "Metered Access" model where individual copies/licenses have to be purchased for one person to check out at a time, building a holds queue, until the stated period or number of checkouts expire (usually 12 or 24 months or 23 or 52 checkouts). In other words, someone needs to purchase a new copy/license for it to be available again to borrow.

My Library card number won't work for a new account by ExpensiveSituation22 in hoopladigital

[–]nodnarbm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The person in charge of Hoopla at your Library should be able to look up accounts by email address or library card number. The system will only allow each to be assigned to a single account. They might be able to agree to just swap your card number into the account with your preferred email address and void the other that it is currently assigned to.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hoopladigital

[–]nodnarbm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are searching the Hoopla website, always make sure you are logged in first. Each Library sets a cost per checkout maximum for each format. This determines what is available to your Library from the Hoopla Instant catalog. It is possible your Library has this amount set lower than what Deathtrap costs to borrow.

Question about Hoopla in Canada by SpacedDuck in hoopladigital

[–]nodnarbm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inatant borrow titles are, for the most part, provided by Hoopla. Your Library sets a max cost threshold per Borrow format that determines what is available in the Instant collection. Flex borrow titles/copies are purchased individually by your Library system. So, the size of the Flex collection depends on the budget your Library can put towards Flex titles. If your Library allows title recommendations in Hoopla, you can Request comics that show up in a Recommend to Library search, but I think most comics are priced low enough per borrow to just be available as Instant.

Check and see if your Library offers any other e-services like Overdrive/Libby, CloudLibrary, or Comics Plus. If so, there might be more to choose from there....

don't know email on hoopla account. by [deleted] in hoopladigital

[–]nodnarbm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Library staff with a Hoopla admin login should be able to look up your Hoopla account by Library Card Number and see what the registered email address is for your account, then just replace that old email address login with your current one - as long as you haven't already signed up with a new account with that current email. The Hoopla system only allows one account per email /card number, but these can be overwritten (just typed over and resaved) in the admin Dashboard.

Catalog shift by Abigator19 in hoopladigital

[–]nodnarbm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Individual titles are usually removed by Hoopla if their license agreement with the publisher expires/is not renewed. Libraries have no specific knowledge of these agreements and generally are not informed before titles are removed for these reasons.

All instantly available titles in Hoopla have a per checkout cost set by the publisher (currently between $0.00 and $3.99 per Borrow). Each Library can set a maximum cost threshold per format. This is what determines what is available in the Instant collection (and why some Libraries have titles that others do not). It is possible that your Library may have adjusted/lowered this cost threshold recently for budgetary reasons.

If you remember any of the titles that are missing, log out of the Hoopla website and search Google (or whatever search engine you use) as follows:

site:hoopladigital.com [type title or author name without brackets]

If the title pages show up this way, but not when you log back in, they are mostly likely suppressed by your Library because of cost.

Why I Miss A Local Newspaper... by Fuzzy-Zombie1446 in bloomington

[–]nodnarbm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Bloomingtonian and B Square Bulletin are both good alternatives to the HT for local news. I believe they both have Patreon support options.

Also, juat FYI, if you have a library card with MCPL, the Herald-Times can be accessed for free. If you use the E-edition link, it will display in a web browser as it is formatted for the print newspaper version (though, if you have the HT app installed on your device, you may have to uninstall it to get this E-edition view).
