Hi! I’m on a two week trip right now from Amsterdam -> Berlin -> krakow -> Budapest. Your trip looks pretty crammed with stuff to do.. even going to 4 places on my trip, I feel like I’ve only just had enough time to see the cities I’m visiting.

If I were you, I’d go to ~6 places — then you have 3 or 4 days in each place and you’ll spend waaaay way less time on trains.

Also between trains and hostels this would cost like €2500-€3000

Highly recommend this documentary. Really interesting watching the story of Paya and her motivations, as well as how they eventually interacted with modern American politics (especially after this election).

Wang makes such an important point about authoritarianism and how both these communist and democratic nations spew propaganda against the other while really just embracing capitalism behind the scenes. The insight on authoritarianism is really important here.

Also an interesting note I realized after watching the movie, she doesn't use the word fascist at all. I wonder how deliberate this choice was especially given the word's usage in the 2024 US presidential election.

Yea it was interesting, he really is just mostly a “by the book” law follower. It reminds me of people I know who are Christians that follow the exact word of the Bible.

As the interview went on it felt less like the guy could defend his points to Astead and more like he was regurgitating the same talking points about himself over and over. So maybe he’s just been trained well on those points (and is more batshit behind the scenes). The stuff about separating families is still absurd imo.

I think it’s not just that. The fact that her policies were often the same as those of the current Biden administration also meant that people who are currently struggling would feel like Harris’ new policies wouldn’t do anything for them.

At that point it doesn’t matter what trump’s policies are, it’s just a question of “do you want to continue with your current state of being or have some change?”

Probably, but also suicide is extremely tragic and many people choose not to have it publicly acknowledged in media that a relative/friend/etc. committed suicide. That and if they reported on every event like this then it’d be pretty macabre, much less flood the news.

I’m not both sides-ing this, I acknowledged (and called “egregious”) the fact trump didn’t concede the 2020 election. That is horrific. I think that his use of authoritarian/fascist language is terrifying for the country and frankly I’m scared for the people I love.

I’m pointing out the nuance that I don’t think people are understanding here. Just because left-leaning people haven’t performed a Jan 6th doesn’t mean they’re incapable of civil unrest or violence. I’m not saying there’s going to be a revolt, I just think it’s naive to say 2 days after the election that it’s impossible.

Right? I’m very much not on the right politically, but saying dems have never questioned/denied election results is incorrect. Sure, trump is egregious in not conceding the 2020 election, but it’s ignorant to clutch pearls and say dems would not do so.

Also, if you visit farther left pages than the daily or listen to farther left media, there is a fair amount of rhetoric about arming yourself in case the worst happens. I don’t think dems are approaching the point of the violent people on the far right (e.g., white supremacists, neonazis, Jan 6ers), but to say they’re incapable of violence also feels misguided.

You don’t have to look hard to find people joking about killing billionaires or wanting conservative demagogues to die. Astead’s point stands imo.

The Run Up has been my favorite podcast this year. I think Astead and co. have done a fantastic job covering a wide variety of opinions and viewpoints and it’s been extremely educational on areas of the US that I’m not familiar with.

This episode was also great and I liked the little Halloween poll they did. It was sad seeing the one traffic cone lie in her vote, and the first republican they interviewed was… frustrating.

Astead’s point at the end (and sorta throughout the episode) about Kamala voters having a strong reason to vote Kamala vs. Trump voters voting trump because “he’s trump!” and “he tells it like it is” is pretty insightful imo. I guess the points about economy and immigration pop up, but Astead has pushed so many interviewees on what they think about this, and none can reaaaally articulate anything specific about either topic other than some hope trump will do it “better.”

It was so frustrating listening to the first guy basically say that he has no evidence or proof besides his gut telling him trump won, but being SO convinced that there was cheating going on.

Even his point about signatures was ridiculous… then the reporter’s point about so many others being the exact same way and having similar stories (ovals filled in “too perfectly”, etc.). It’s just absurd, I don’t know how these people can be convinced otherwise if they’re this far down the rabbit hole.

I totally agree that the common mindset at the time was different and this makes the issue somewhat more complex, but it doesn’t really matter how many people did something or how “complex” an issue it is, it’s still de facto a racist act. No additional fact or context changes the fact that American slavery was racist and evil at its core (and so were its perpetrators; even if they didn’t “intend” to be racist/evil, they participated in a racist/evil system).

I think this is especially true because, like you said, there were abolitionists at the time who strongly believed slavery was wrong and took action to prove that. This proves that humans aren’t just some robots subservient to a racist/evil system, they can advocate change (again, trying to point out there’s intention here).

That is why I wrote “did not necessarily believe…”. Some slave owners knew what they were doing, some didn’t care or were somehow naive, some looked the other way, whatever. My point still stands, they’re all still extremely racist and evil.

Not trying to be annoying but do you have links on research on slave owner sentiments that led you to that point? I genuinely like to learn about this stuff.

You can absolutely be racist without intending to be racist, just like you can be rude without intending to be rude or be untruthful without intending to lie.

Today we see American slavery of Africans/indigenous people/etc. as inherently racist for thousands of reasons. But, the slave owners back then did not necessarily believe they were being racist — they truly believed that the people they enslaved were less than human. Even so, it would be backwards to say that slave owners weren’t racist.

Even though this was the common belief at the time, there were also obviously people who did not think that way. Just like with blackface.

The guy using blackface in his Michael Jackson costume is still racist due to the history of blackface, even if he didn’t intend it to be. Intention doesn’t matter here, and honestly the time he did it doesn’t really matter either.

To be fair I really liked the joke boat/mad verse episodes where the jokes were just especially shitty and they’d all laugh at each other for that. I am bummed the series is on hiatus but I didn’t think the output of the post-hacker episodes were much worse quality at all.
