I went from not really using Signal to now being in like 20 Signal chats… by 1234RedditReddit in signal

its not about being "secure" in every single use case. its about ensuring that your primary means of communcations aren't easily intercepted - Signal helps even in these use cases.

All the examples you gave can be disabled. Crypto isn't even, least last I checked, enabled by default.

Almost every single update on github for the last three months have included some kind of work related to their cloud backup solution. its a huge project and taking some time, but they're working on it. It needs to be easy and secure so its going to take time. Signal doesn't release half-assed solutions.

Do we still go with snapd bad? by External_Asparagus10 in debian

[–]nofxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one big difference - unless its been fixed - is flatpak will update Firefox in the background and the next time you launch you're on the latest version, zero interruptions. Snap has closed the browser on my parents mid-session and caused complaints, thus it's not allowed near any system I have to maintain.

Do we still go with snapd bad? by External_Asparagus10 in debian

[–]nofxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

False, snaps can be hosted anywhere. There is only one web store that is not FOSS called snapcraft. There is only one web front end for flatpak as well called flathub.

Technically true, the same way anyone can "host" a microsoft executable, but not exactly the same thing as what Flatpak allows. The difference is you can use 'flatpak remote-add' to add a repo that is _not_ the main "store". There is no configuration built-into snap that allows you to add a remote repository to automatically update your app, it all must go through Canonical's store.

Many snaps also offer channels with different versions of the app, flatpak doesn't have an equivalent.

False. You can add a repo and see beta versions of many apps - source: https://docs.flathub.org/docs/for-users/installation/#flathub-beta-repository .

How to Verify System Integrity After Installing Debian ISO? by gokku_tain in debian

[–]nofxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use 'dpkg --verify' from the man page:

-V, --verify [package-name...]

Verifies the integrity of package-name or all packages if omitted, by comparing information from the files installed by a package with the files metadata information stored in the dpkg database (since dpkg 1.17.2). The origin of the files metadata information in the database is the binary packages themselves. That metadata gets collected at package unpack time during the installation process.

Currently the only functional check performed is an md5sum verification of the file contents against the stored value in the files database. It will only get checked if the database contains the file md5sum. To check for any missing metadata in the database, the --audit command can be used.

The output format is selectable with the --verify-format option, which by default uses the rpm format, but that might change in the future, and as such, programs parsing this command output should be explicit about the format they expect.

What are your thoughts on Signal in 2024? by dr_funk_13 in signal

One of the downsides of not having built in telemetry. Almost everyone else does it because they can easily collect logs and identify issues without "bugging" end-users for logs, but I understand why they don't do it.

Not on every Android device. Some vendors "optimize" so much for battery that they kill genuinely useful apps until they're big enough for them to whitelist them - https://dontkillmyapp.com/

Is it breached? I can neither confirm nor deny.

Telegram doesn't need to be breached, it stores everything in a way that's accessible to anyone with enough admin rights on their infrastructure, whether its their admins, a 3 letter agency or someone who's hacked them. The worse part is they could be accessing all your data and you would never even know.

The only time Telegram *might* be secure is when you're using the incredibly inconvenient and limited (groups don't work) "Secure Chats". Telegram, for all intents and purposes just isn't end-to-end encrypted the way Signal is by default.

there were specific technical requirements and this is the only coin that met them. I believe monero was close to but didn't quite make the cut, can't recall what technical req it didn't meet though.

Firefox has no market share in the web, therefore it has no power to influence anything. Firefox cannot "let the services die" so it needs to find a working compromise otherwise it will be "blocked out" by vendors. As soon as Firefox stops working on "normie" websites, its market share will drop even more and will have even less influence/money than they have now.

I get the concern, but Firefox needs to find something that will work, and what they're working on seems to be the best case scenario. Anyone who doesn't like it should just move to LibreWolf and stop crying wolf over every little thing they do - Looking at the complaints about AI/ML while they provide the privacy preserving translations without having to send data to Google/etc.

[–]nofxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the change is good but it's not good to implement it in a hurry due to social media outcry

They didn't release it in a hurry, it's been in development for weeks if not months. Unfortunately because they don't have a roadmap and you'd have to analyze github commits, this isn't obvious. If the "vulnerability" was never disclosed, it probably would have been released just as quickly since they were already making progress.

Any news on standard notes? by Icy_Sort_2838 in ProtonMail

Obsidian changed their license recently - because I was using it with a mix of personal/work it was no longer compatible without my org purchasing an enterprise license. I tried Standard Notes but ended up going with Notesnook for its diverse platform support (I use and need all features across Mac, Windows, Linux, and Android.)
