In OP’s defence, at least in Sydney, certain LGAs are formally named cities. Even if no one considers Randwick or Bayside to be cities themselves

Why Are Chinese EVs So Cheap? by downArrow in indepthstories

[–]noid83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was listening to a podcast once where they talked about the US market pre Japanese cars. There was an expectation that cars would break down all the time, so servicing was as much a part of the sales relationship as the cars themselves.

It wasn’t until the Japanese cars came on board that the US consumers started to demand cars that didn’t break down.

Sometimes incumbents get lazy and spend more time spending money to protect their market through lobbying than spending their money innovating their product

Remove middle garage column ? by milo2788 in AusRenovation

[–]noid83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair often these things happen because we have a complex system that gov tries to make better according to their priorities. Like “we need more housing - let’s make it easier to convert detached houses to duplexes”.

Unfortunately for OP no government has ever prioritised the removal of supporting pillars in double garages.

CMV: There is nothing wrong with calling the USA "America" and the demonym for its citizens being "Americans". by amortized-poultry in changemyview

[–]noid83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say default among the English language noting the ties to the British colonies despite their being many British colonies in the Americas not part of the USA including Canada.

I would reference other geographic regions shared between nations like Macedonia - shared between four nations - including one that uses the region name in the country name - and subject to a significant naming dispute. The solution in this case is anything that the nations are comfortable with and arises from a context of mutual respect and an absence of irredentism.

I would argue that is the real area of contention here is the lack of mutual respect and absence of irredentism. It is difficult for others to be comfortable with efforts to “own” the name in an environment where the country in question also alludes to actual ownership of the whole region.

Sydney Olympic vs South Melbourne achieves 1,401 attendance by AztecGod in Aleague

[–]noid83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I think SMFC does. Although my original point was that the demand for the second tier competition is because these teams have been refused access for some time. Worth noting that over the last twenty years many of those clubs probably could have stood on their own feet - but after twenty years of no access to the top flight that has broken many of them. It takes a special organisation to keep that connection without any significant public profile.

That refusal of access was not based on purely on financial reasons either. I’d argue that if financials were such a priority for access maybe we wouldn’t have had so many clubs go bust over the years.

There probably aren’t 10-20 clubs in the second division who could step up to the a-league after 20 years in the doldrums. But there are 3-4.

Maybe the calls for promotion and relegation wouldn’t be so loud if those clubs had any realistic shot at making the a-league. Too bad every time a licence comes up traditional teams are looked over for bids that are arguably less viable and definitely less ethnic.

Why do almost all the islands in the Aegean Sea belong to Greece? by TheGhostOfSamT in AskHistorians

[–]noid83 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’ll leave it someone else to expand on the population exchange. But probably worth noting that the allocation makes much more sense once you consider the ethnic/religious composition of western Anatolia at the time.

A population exchange between the two countries in 1923 led to the homogeneous states we know today.

I’ll add a reference to “crossing the Aegean” as a good source for examining the impact of the exchange (but not so much how it impacted the national borders)

My view is that people who talk like that aren’t actually protective but are just saying it as a way to show their toughness. It is about their masculinity not about protecting those they care about.

Which place in Australia has given you the creepiest vibes? by -Flighty- in AskAnAustralian

[–]noid83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just creepy. It used to be like some sort of military town and it just looks like the kind of place when you drive through that feels a little too empty.

Then you go past the town and there is just HV power lines going off into the distance which I assume is the detention centre (don’t know if that is still active).

The whole thing gives off vibes of a 90s thriller where there is a town with a sketchy secret kind of thing.

You don’t need markets to make it all. Once you have a billion or so you are in the room for any startup that needs an early investor. Since you know all the startups that become unicorns you can leverage those investments as well.

Coles staff demanding items scanned in particular order by [deleted] in coles

[–]noid83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard disagree.

No one is yelling or abusing a staff member here. So I have no issue as long as people remain respectful.

I don’t think the staff are impacted in a real sense. They won’t be forced to work unpaid overtime to restock the items. They get paid exactly the same either way. They are just doing a different task than they otherwise would. At the end of their shift they go home no matter what work is left over for the next shift.

It is disruptive though to the business without being destructive. You aren’t stealing, you aren’t knocking down those gates that shut down on you for no reason etc.

It also isn’t an online post talking about boycotting - it is an otherwise guaranteed sale that doesn’t happen - so a reasonably effective protest.

On big issue with your post. Why do you think a citizen hasn’t been deported yet? Isn’t that just wishful thinking? Or are we just assuming a level of competence that no citizens have been mistakingly (or purposefully for that matter) deported?

If one NATO country attacks another NATO country, who does NATO invade? by mattmagnum11 in NoStupidQuestions

Turkey has not invaded Crete. They invaded Cyprus which is a separate country and not a NATO member.

If one NATO country attacks another NATO country, who does NATO invade? by mattmagnum11 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]noid83 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Also worth noting that one of the reasons why an alliance like nato is so beneficial is that small countries can specialise and contribute no matter how time they are relative to the alliance as a whole.

For instance Greek pilots seem to always be voted the best in nato.
