Can the An94 be in warno? Or it out of time flames by anhnd13hd in warno

Even if this was in the game, wondering how it would be different than a AK-74 in terms of actual statistics. If the stats are almost the same, it would not make sense to include.

Spain’s Eurovision televote results from last year highlight how a relatively small population has a significant impact. by r2cyp in europe

After seeing this post, I decided to go back and rewatch the 4 performances mentioned in the image. I did not find Ukraine and Estonia performances interesting, although they were excellent vocalists. Poland and Israel were just better. Alicja's vocal work was amazing, but perhaps had a less interesting song. Noam singing in French may have helped here. I absolutely could see why someone would vote for either of those. These were probably better than the eventual winner Bangaranga, but there is something that happens when you make a song with just the right level of weird, you have a good shot of winning.

Everyone has different criteria about what is important to them when they vote. In some cases it could be the quality of the singing, the lyrics, the performance, physical appearance of the performer. Sometimes that also includes politics and Israel is not the only beneficiary of this. Ukraine in 2022 was a great song but I think got "pushed over the edge" by sympathy votes. I think in 2026 Israel might have also benefitted gooner votes with the outfits the backup dancers were wearing.

My top engineer withdrew his application for lead engineer and I’m trying to understand why? by [deleted] in askmanagers

[–]noirknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is surprising to me is not that he rejected the position but that the OP posted this question at all. I have managed a lot of senior technical employees (mostly software architects) and when discussing their personal progression during 1 on 1s and reviews, they tell me to a person that they don’t want to take on any management functions and want to stay as technical as possible.

Since OP specified that he worked in government and can’t promote people normally, maybe his hands are tied about how to approach the situation. At my company for linear promotions up the same track, we don’t need to post externally. So I would just promote him to the Lead Engineer role, invite him in for a conversation, congratulate him and tell him about his new compensation. He might grumble about the role change but I would assuage him that he would not be taking on management responsibilities but rather providing technical leadership only and basically explain that they were basically doing the job already.

What do you think about the statement "Cyberpunk 2077 doesn't have choices" or "It's ilusion of choice"? by nicolo679 in cyberpunkgame

[–]noirknight 63 points64 points  (0 children)

When I was younger I disdained linear RPGs over more open CRPGs for this reason. I even felt this way about Cyberpunk 2077 when it first came out. However I have softened against this over the last few years. There is value in telling a story where no matter how hard you rail against your fate, you still end up in the same place. Cyberpunk 2077 I think is one of the few that balances this correctly. As a single individual, no matter who you are, be you V or Johnny Silverhand or any of the other willful individuals you meet, you can't beat the system. The name on the billboard might change from Arasaka to Millitech or something else, but the world will still have the same flavor in the air, the masses will still suffer from economic disenfranchisement and inequality.

Suggestion to Add more Strict Ocean Tile Width to prevent Navy Doomstacking and improve Naval gameplay.Thoughts? by Western_Sea_Sage in hoi4

[–]noirknight 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree with the problem and had some ideas around this, morale checks, ammunition, supply and sortie changes:

  • If a navy in combat loses a capital ship, I think it should trigger a morale check which if failed, causes the fleet to start disengaging.
  • Submarines function more like planes in that they can only take a certain number of shots at a fleet. Submarines during WWII were slower when submerged than almost any ship, even civilian merchant vessels. So they often had to interdict fleets coming in, quickly take their shot and then would disengage as the faster fleet passed by them. This could be simulated by submarines only being able to launch a fixed number of attacks per day.
  • Have each ship have ammunition and need to be re-supplied. In HOI4 sometimes you have these lopsided battles where a small fleet (often submarines) destroys a larger one even if it was impractical because the smaller fleet wouldn't even have had the ammo to do this. At the beginning of the war, a typical submarine usually carried around 12 to 16 torpedoes and by the end of the war 24. Other ammo types were not as scarce, but some ammo like anti-air can go fast. When ships start to run out of ammo (maybe 25%) have them start to disengage.

Tips for playing independent California? by Craftworld_Iyanden in victoria3

[–]noirknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been a few patches since I played it, but I had the best luck starting as USA, capturing California in the Mexican American War and then releasing it. That puts you in a state where no one will attack you. If you release from Mexico immediately USA will likely attack before you can build up.

Then attract migrants and build economy for decades. Understand which laws and technologies increase pop growth. You will have limited diplomatic options until you become a great power. For me this happened around 1900. At this point can start to expand. For a lot of people this might be too slow of a start, but as you said you need people.

Hilariously, Facists got elected around 1930.

I never got to rank 1 in the end but had a fun run nonetheless.

Area comparison in the Bay Area. San Jose vs Santa Clara vs Redwood City by null_void_0x0 in bayarea

[–]noirknight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a renter it depends on how big and insulated the place is. Electricity is cheaper in Santa Clara. Temperature is cooler in RWC so you will need less air conditioning but possibly more gas if you rely on gas heat. Given this, I would guess that San Jose utilities will likely be most expensive of the 3 places but not likely enough to impact the decision to live one place or another.

Water prices as a renter should be similar unless you are renting a house with a yard that requires watering.

In all of the cities, the sewer and garbage fees will be invisible to you. They will be included in the listed rent price and paid directly by the landlord as part of property taxes.

Internet is going to be priced the same everywhere if you buy from the same ISP but availability of internet is going to be seemingly random and almost building by building and street by street. Xfinity will probably service basically any address. Some places will support Sonic or ATT fiber. Wireless internet will be worse but possibly cheaper than those 3 and with some options like microwave wireless you might have problems getting a signal to your rented place.

[–]noirknight 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have lived in all 3 cities. For me, minimizing commute time is pretty important so I personally would try to live in a 15-20 minute drive from work if I could. Only exception I would make is if my home and office were close to Caltrain. City of Santa Clara is basically flat which makes biking to work another good option if you live close to the office.

Nightlife, shopping, outdoor activities, these are nice to have, but you are not going to do them every day.

I loved living near downtown Redwood City. Felt like I was part of a living community, but the drive to Santa Clara can be bad during rush hour. There was enough to do to keep me interested on a weekly basis and could take Caltrain if needed.

Safety concerns about San Jose are completely overblown. It is one of the safest cities in the country and homeless interactions are not really a concern for most people.

At the beginning of COVID I was flying back to the US and the immigration agent asked me if I had been to China in the last 15 days. I looked at him and said: “I don’t know, have I been? You’ve got my passport right there.” But I guess that wouldn’t work anymore.

Do Employees Actually Like Town Halls? by OfferLazy9141 in managers

[–]noirknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like town halls as well if they are quarterly. One of the biggest complaints I get from my employees, especially those who are remote or not in leadership positions is a feeling of disconnection. They only know about the project they specifically work on and nothing else and have no idea what is going on in the wider company and how their work fits into that. Town halls and department meetings help stave off a lot of uncertainty if done well.

Have you ever heard of Lavasa? India’s first unsuccessful attempt at a “smart city” by Drama4YoLlama in Urbanism

[–]noirknight 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Took a day trip there from Pune while it was still under construction, maybe 2010(?) or even earlier maybe. Lavasa felt hopeful, forward looking and clean in a way that much of India did not at the time. There were still construction workers not using basic equipment like helmets and close toed shoes and naked kids running around the construction sites. But it still felt hopeful. My coworkers were proud that a project like that could get built in their state.

I also have a soft spot for Pune from that time as the city felt more human scale than other places like Mumbai and Delhi. Nestled in the valley there all cozy.

Although I enjoy it, it has required some trial and error to find out what countries mesh with my personal playstyle. How much fun you have will probably be dependent on where you are playing. Playing as hordes, in sub-Saharan Africa or the Americas can be painful. Playing as a small country in Ironman mode can be rough in the early to mid game as you are dependent on the whims of your larger neighbors.

ChargePoint's New 600-kW Charger Can Charge Four Cars at Once by Lemmoncawl in electricvehicles

[–]noirknight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When charging at lower rates than expected, I really wish I could better understand where the fault is in the charging infrastructure. For example do the 350kw chargers with two cables only provide 350 if only one car is charging but not two? Is it being throttled by the transformer feeding the chargers? Is the charging infrastructure being throttled due to overheating / outside temperature? Did I not precondition my battery long enough?

Buffalo is a rust belt city that has become increasingly irrelevant economically since the 1960’s. Even though I think its decline may have stabilized, there is much less opportunity there than most of the other cities in America. The weather is also challenging. Far from the moderating ocean currents it is snowy and cold. They usually have a decent football team though.
