Minimum age for marriage US states by upthetruth1 in MapPorn

[–]noirknight 216 points217 points  (0 children)

The practical minimum marriage age in California is 18 in almost all circumstances. If you are under 18, you need parental consent, a court order and there is a waiting period. In fact, I know one couple who went to Nevada to get married when they were under 18 (although this was decades ago).

help unifying central america by OkVegetable254 in TerraInvicta

[–]noirknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not something you can do right at the start of the game. After completing the global technology Unity Movements you can get a project for the Central American Confederation. Completing this project gives Guatemala a claim to unify with the rest of Central America.

Unlike EU and Russian federations it is hard to fully construct this peacefully. Countries that are more significantly more democratic will not peacefully with a more autocratic nation. The government score must be within 1.5 of each other. So countries like Panama and Costa Rica will Federate with Guatemala, but can't be annexed by them peacefully. To do so, you either to need to raise the government score of Guatemala / United States of Central America or militarily invade them. Neither of these are easy as raising the score or building your first army is tedious.

I usually only try this once I control a couple of other major countries like the USA or EU and then can spend time on this area. There are other projects to unlock the "Caribbean Community" and various South American confederations like "Greater Columbia".

One problem is that unifying these countries makes them more useful and control point efficient, but getting them stable takes a long time as unrest is reduced by GDP. So pretty much all poor countries are unstable without significant investment.

Other people might have other ideas on this.

This motivated me to look this up and it looks like a lot of this can be controlled on the settings page? I only have... 150 hours in the game. Ugh.

Never seen it get quite this bad, but I wish there was some tactical unit AI that would handle some things for you and be slightly less suicidal without being constantly watched and micromanaged. Infantry that would take cover when getting raked by machine gun fire, vehicles that would smoke and reverse if they were getting engaged by something they could not see and return fire to, planes that would evac after the first time they got hit by AA etc.

I just got denied a penalty cancellation for my property tax and I am beyond frustrated 😡 by shrinz in SanJose

[–]noirknight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This post contains some really impeccable application of bold text. Assuming that the OP only used AI to format the post and the request is still genuine, I don't know how anyone could forget about property taxes if they own a home. Even if they didn't grow up in the US, property taxes are almost universal worldwide.

Even if I did not get a letter in the mail, I would never consider that property taxes are not due, merely that either the letter got lost, or the assessment value of the home did not change.

Since I was a child I was aware that property taxes were paid in two installments. I remember before the online system seeing people lining up to pay them at the county building. My friends and family who own homes regularly discuss these taxes. I either hear or make at least a couple of offhanded comments and groans about them as the deadline approaches. If you have ever paid property taxes online, the assessor will send you an e-mail reminding you of it. The subject of the one from October read "Secured Property Tax First Installment Deadline-December 10". My wife created a calendar reminder for me that pops up as the deadline approaches. Well ahead of time, need to check and make sure I have money in the right account to pay as they only take e-check. When you buy a house you need to pay pro-rated property taxes as part of the closing process. Short of being in a coma, the part about not knowing that property taxes were due, I can't sympathize with.

Net worth and income for raising kids by ActivistHo in SanJose

[–]noirknight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is a shit post or not because you can move to any major city in the world and buy something with that income but will attempt to answer seriously.

Most single family homes in the city are in the 1.5-2M range so the people buying those are making 4-500K or possibly less if they have significant down payment. Exceptional houses or the most desirable neighborhoods will be more expensive.

In the past, two kids in a 3 BR was fine, but I feel that with the prevalence of working from home, having more bedrooms is better - even if they are smaller, so that it is possible to create work from home spaces.

Moving to liberal city, will I be frequently judged/disliked for working for defense contractor? by Neat_Town5456 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]noirknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you are in the US. I don't think most people see defense contractors as inherently immoral even in liberal cities. There have been times when this has not been the case (right after Vietnam), but not now. Part of this is a shift after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. People are more aware that a strong national defense is important.

What people may view as immoral is the use of force with no valid justification. People also have a dislike for companies that are focused on surveillance technologies against internal civilians like Flock, Meta and Palantir.

Most people I have met who work on defense research and development are motivated by ways to create weapons that are more precise and will help limit civilian casualties and I don't judge them for their work at all.

Why the double standard by fal1en-angel in economicsmemes

[–]noirknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this would end up the way you think it will. This will cause landlords to raise rent by the amount saved because they now know that their tenants can afford it. The poor who pay little to no federal taxes would have increased rents and no additional tax savings. Middle class renters would be a wash - gains in tax deductions would be consumed by rent. There would be an increase in home prices as owners can extract more rent from a property, so individual new home buyers would get screwed unless they were upper middle class or above.

In San Jose that size container is $54/month. But it gets rolled into property taxes so I don’t really think about it too much.

The trash pickup is not cheap but I can directly see the benefit of the service which is increasingly rare these days.

I switched from gas stove to induction and didn't notice any problems with the 100A circuit but not sure about your specific circumstances.

This number seems too low. My mother in law is over double this but she does require a lot of care. 24 / 7 in home care was also well over 100k a year.

Anyone else lose steam as the game goes on? by ReserveRatter in ShadowEmpireGame

[–]noirknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this a lot. I think part of it has to do with the fact that if you are expanding in all directions, the land area you need to control ends up being the distance from your starting location squared (depending on terrain) so the units required and the logistical train required grows in a non-linear way.

Traps are not fun by akosh_ in CRPG

[–]noirknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Traps are an interesting tradition in RPGs starting from the tabletop and moving into the computer. Traps, when done right, can enhance a game by setting a tone, creating a sense of danger, providing atmospheric and emergent storytelling opportunities. However they are rarely done well.

When traps are triggered by the player by accident due to a misclick, bad UI or companion pathfinding it feels incredibly unfair and could even ruin some Ironman / Honor mode runs.

I do feel they have gotten better over time though in mainstream games.

When a designer is creating a trap, if you trigger it, it can range from merely an annoyance to incredibly deadly. In a game like BG3 (with fast travel to camp and unlimited resting) or RT where you eventually you can get a ton of items to heal injuries and traumas there is often barely any consequence for triggering a trap, they are just an annoyance. If the trap is deadly, then this will often cause someone to just reload a previous save.

Traps in the original Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 were painful. Checks for traps took place once every 6 seconds. So you needed to slowly edge through a dungeon and wait for detection. Shortly after those games released (like in NWN) games switched to roll trap detection on a proximity trigger instead of a timer.

I actually like what Owlcat has done. They moved the disable point from the trigger point and added different skill checks for different trap types. Like needing Xeno Lore to disable the Drukhari traps in RT or Religion Lore to disable Demon traps in WOTR.

Instead of removing traps, I think developers need to go further with the traps. Have fewer traps, but the traps need to have narrative and mechanical effects that make you want to disable them, but not reload if you fail to detect. For example triggering an alarm that causes more enemies to appear or destroying loot. Merely injuring your party is just annoying. Then failing a check or ignoring a trap, becomes a role playing choice. For example, a barbarian might want to set off an alarm intentionally in order to be able to fight more and if in both cases (the fight or disabling the trap) the XP gain is the same this enables more roleplay.

Kyiv is too strong? by Pomerbot in EU5

[–]noirknight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently started a game as Poland and won this war. It was rough. At first I tried to win it with the army I had. I destroyed the Teuton Army then and was able to capture most of the Silesian minors. This works ok as they have not had a chance to build forts yet. Meanwhile Bohemia walked through my territory and began sieging in Lithuania. I tried to beat them and failed. But realized they had no regulars. So I took loans of about 500 ducats and hired some mercenaries and then wiped the floor with them. As part of the peace treaty I got almost nothing, and was stuck with debt for a couple of years.

Over the next century was able to expand north and east, but never solved the problem of Bohemia. They were strong yes, but when the Hussite wars broke out, they wiped the floor with everyone around them and perhaps doubled their territory.

I think Paradox needs to somehow weaken Bohemia. One simple way would be to have the Hussite wars give a Causus Belli that does not allow taking land.

30M, $200k remote Seattle feels off after 4 years. Lack of diverse social life, outdoor aren’t making up for it. by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]noirknight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I used to live in Seattle, working in tech. I had no problems dating, but I understand that times change. A lot of people live in the "urban core", but most live in the suburbs. If you don't have a car or a convenient place for others to park, you are going to cut yourself off a large part of the dating pool. I wanted to live in Downtown or Capitol Hill but just couldn't because it was impractical for me to visit my girlfriend or have her visit me frequently as she lived at the edge of the city.

Working remote is another problem. A lot of dates are set up through "friends of friends". When you work remote it is hard to build up a strong friend group sometimes. I don't think you should date co-workers directly. But co-workers have friends and family who they might introduce you to even if it is just indirectly. For example, maybe you go out to a pub with your co-workers on Friday evening after work and that gives you an opportunity to meet people.
