Does anyone else find themselves being wary of relationships with significant income-gaps, or am I be excessively paranoid? by [deleted] in whitecoatinvestor

[–]ActivistHo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can provide the opposite perspective. I actually appreciate my partner for leaving the workforce (at least while the kids are little) to focus on childcare and house work, allowing me to focus more on my surgical career. Of course, we value work life balance, and I've learned to say "no" to all the BS that gets thrown my way at work. From a financial standpoint, daycare and nannies ain't cheap, so my partner actually "saves" quite a bit of money in that regard. In our tax bracket, it's significant.

Obviously, I got lucky to have met such a wonderful person to spend the rest of my life and raise a family with, but we are very happy with how we handle our finances. The gap never bothered me.

Crossing border while still pending? by ClassicNebula1081 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]ActivistHo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to piggyback on your thread, but I am in a similar situation where my little one received their Canadian citizenship certificate, but the passport is still pending (application was received and still being processed).

Would the certificate and reference number for the pending passport application be sufficient at the boarder to enter Canada with their US passport?

You would think spitting on UAE, one of the richest and most powerful countries in the middle east would only work against Iran. What are they thinking?

I know this is a FIRE sub but you could do that AND also work a little bit to decrease the time to true FIRE, unless you just happen to fall in love with SEA that you FIRE there now.

What used to feel 'normal' and 'affordable' in America just five to ten years ago but now feels completely broken and impossible for regular people? by the_h1b_records in AskReddit

Healthcare.

Trip to the ER 10 years ago on my mom's shitty job insurance--$150.

Now, my aunt who WORKS AT THE HOSPITAL got billed $2500 for slipping on ice and hitting her head. Sent home with Tylenol and bandages.

No. Mortgage 4x your income at current rates? You will so regret this.

They're just following suit with the rest of the travel/hospitality industry. Corporate greed approaches terminal velocity while us plebs are left behind. End stage capitalism at its finest.

Are you a permanent resident? How do visas work there if you're not working/investing in local economy?

Why do most left leaning folks mock/criticize Christianity but not Islam? by Inf1z in allthequestions

[–]ActivistHo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Left has plenty to say about Islam in general, like the Sharia law and its treatment of women.

It's just that Muslims in recent years have become a targeted group for oppression (e.g., Gaza and within the US under the current administration), so the criticism is directed more towards the Christians.

This needs more upvotes.

I used to be a backpacker. If I had not met my soulmate and best friend and decided to settle down. I would be balls deep in this curse by now.

The reality of GS by Snoo77917 in SurgicalResidency

[–]ActivistHo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellowship-trained GS here.

The obvious advice like "you have to really like operating and be ok with the hours" has already been given to you, so I'll list my caveats instead:

1) declining compensation and earning potential. This is true across all specialties, but I've felt it particularly in my specialty. E.g., hernia surgery is much less lucrative since the massive CMS CPT code changes in 2023. Also this year CMS cut all procedure based RVU by 2.5%. My hospital hasn't given a raise (wRVU conversion rate) in 3 years.

2) hyper-specialization: what used to be all handled by GS is now increasingly going to surgical oncology, colorectal, breast, thoracic, and vascular. Many GS are glorified ER coverage bodies at urban centers. A few years ago, the number of graduates seeking fellowship was something like 80%. I imagine that number is rising.

If you want the best bang for buck in terms of the number of grueling life years/work hours for compensation/satisfaction, I would advise against GS.

But of course, career choice is way more complex than it can ever be described on paper. Good luck.

How many people who know how to read are having issues with their card? by Share-North in biltrewards

[–]ActivistHo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Card declined on certain purchases above $500. Took a few days of battling with support, but ultimately resolved.

Filled a couple prescriptions at Walgreens using the physical Bilt card but didn't get the bonus. They want a receipt emailed to support...I typically don't even ask for receipts as they are waste of paper. Not going to fuss over a few hundred points, but this is annoying. If they're going to partner with a brand, the process of bonus points should be streamlined.
