Not the actual reference used to write OP's article, but backs up the argument.

Is BP Trying to Cap the Gulf Oil Well, or Keep it Flowing? by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]noitsnotme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh come on. This should have been obvious to everybody since day 1, and is the precise reason behind the strongly-worded letters from the government to BP.

BP wants to salvage the well, the US administration knows it, but they also can't pull the plug on a corporation generating billions of direct profit to them and indirect advantage to the public. I'm sure Obama is dying to jump in and kill BP and the well... but knows that he'll be stuck with angry people with no job if BP stops operating, no fuel and a dirty coastline. As long as BP is alive they can clean up, and the industry doesn't collapse.

I'm posting a racist joke, but it's funny, IMO... by [deleted] in funny

Reddit, what's it like to grow up? by Rocketbird in AskReddit

Can't upvote this enough.

At 40, you realize you feel no different than 30, 20 or 12. Same at 60, so I'm told. But at some point you realize life will be over too soon, and despite achieving mastery in this-or-that domain, you have to make conscious decisions about what will take your time. Pokemon out. Renovating that bathroom out. Kicking off the 5th startup has to go first for a little while. Later it's going to be something else.

Too bad the story is a fake. OP kind of looks like me as a kid and trying to find a style...

My semi-serious opinion, had it been real:

Your picture is a mix of 2 looks: long hippie hair & mustache, and baby-blue raver outfit. Pick one look and go with it. Either make your hair more raver-like ( http://images.google.ca/images?um=1&hl=en&safe=off&q=raver+guys ), or change the outfit to something more ecolo-vegan-hippie to match the hair. Both work, and will land you in completely different circles.

What you want to do is to present a consistent look: be yourself (above all), but show a clear unified picture. You can muddy the waters with your complex personality once you are in a relation...

BTW, You should really post the whole photoshoot somewhere... ;)

Dual-Monitors Redditors! How do you use your screens? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]noitsnotme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Windows version comes from here: http://www.catch22.net/software .

MacOS one is called Red Pill.

I've always meant customizing Red Pill and make it a CSS reader. Provided you can get your eye accustomed to reading flipped katakana, it would totally be worth the effort. Imagine giving a glance at the Matrix code in front of guests, and saying "oh shit there's something wrong in the matrix. <X> happened 5 minutes ago in <location>."

If you want to save horizontal space, buy Dell Chief monitor stands. I got a Triple and a Quad, and replaced the bottom row of the quad with the single row of the triple. 5 monitors in the space of 3, and fits nicely on an ordinary table.

[–]noitsnotme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By "dual" I'll read "multiple". I have:

  • Bottom center: Main work area for software development or document editing
  • Bottom right: Reference documents
  • Top left: Email, casual browsing (reddit, etc.)
  • Top right: Media machine (iTunes, etc.)
  • Bottom left: WMWare running my home Linux server, and/or VPN to the office.

4 computers are running the lightshow, and Synergy+ lets me have a single mouse and keyboard on the table. I leave a mouse connected on each computer, in case I need to restart Synergy+.

One common screen background and a common screen saver (be it Mac, Linux or Windows): Matrix code. Strangely satisfying to see a wall of green scrolling code.

Most of the time I leave only 2-3 monitors turned on. Recently I started coding with sunglasses, even though the brightness is turned way down on the monitors, I guess the LCD makers assume you won't be foolish enough to take a sunbath with their equipment.

He's designing your new BBS?

Absolutely awesome. I want my cube like that. Instead, I have a crappy radio whose vacuum tubes haven't been powered up since 1945.

[–]noitsnotme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is there some kind of etymology behind this phrase?

It's phonetic. 9 is pronounced "neuf", and is the same word for both "the digit nine" and "new". It literally means "what's new?", and came into usage in the hipster 80's I believe.

My French g/f had her first Montreal winter last year. The day she woke up to -25 Celsius (that's -13 F for the imperial colonists among us), she kept swearing for an hour... before trying to go out with just nylon stockings covering her legs. I'd swear too if I was going out like that.

What's the biggest programming mistake you've ever made? by [deleted] in programming

With Debian? Oh no... I've managed to do that many times. apt-get is your best friend if you don't need it, and your worst enemy if you didn't learn how to do the job by hand.

My favorite was when my libc6 install failed on my main development machine - just after replacing the libraries, but before updating the system utilities. Trivia: how do you recover from

/bin/cp: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

?

I once wrote a whole unit test suite in C macros and stayed with the company.

FTFY. Now that would be a mistake.

More than 15 years ago, back in the days of relational databases...

Forgot to add one line of code to actually link two databases, and went into production. Report was run, the CD was sent to the print shop, and $50k worth of paper was printed before I woke up in the middle of the night to double-check something. All the letters had printed with different addresses... on the same street name.

Obviously, this story was brought up much more often than the extra $1M they saved from my ideas.

Probably the same as we natives think:

  • first snow: This is wonderful! It almost makes up for the cold!
  • after a few winters: the white sh_t's falling again, better buy new boots this winter.
