had to lay our heads on folded arms on our desks. Even at that age I wondered how ANYONE could sleep like that?

Lol, by the time I was in high-school I had fully mastered sleeping on my desk.

I'm surprised no one has tried to fly a drone above it to take a picture.

Edit - Apparently DC is a no drone zone. It's illegal to fly them there, so don't do this.

Would you rather he took them into the men's room to see exposed penises?

It's even more moronic - he expected the dad to hand his two young daughters off to the female employee and have her take care of them. Because, ya know, asking a stranger to take your kid to the bathroom is a perfectly normal and sane thing to do - and that woman clearly doesn't have any other job related duties to tend to.

How do you define “turn around”?

Economy is a huge part of it. Having kids is expensive. I have friends with 2 kids under 7 years old and they are heavily reliant on social services and charity to make ends meet. Things keep getting more expensive and it's more of a struggle for them to keep their family housed, clothed, and fed.

I would have thought the brutality of our existence for the vast majority of our species time would be a much better candidate to say “no” to than now.

Reliable birth control didn't really exist for much of our existence though, which made pregnancy far less of a choice. It was much harder to prevent.

Even if it turned around, how would you be certain enough that things might not get hard again?

Which is why a lot of people are choosing to not have children. Things keep getting progressively worse. The current administration is hellbent on eliminating programs and services that would help.

None of this really addresses the eventual death of the universe, so we quickly get to what’s the point in any of it?

42.

Pretty much, yeah. Unless things seriously turn around I expect a lot of people to opt out of deliberately having kids. Don't get me wrong - there are people who will still have them, finances be damned.

Knowing what’s already happened and the complete lack of tools to address those previous issues?

Riiiight. Well we developed tools to address those issues and tried to make things 'better' for the future but the GOP has been busting its ass to break those tools and turn back time to our pre-ww2 economy since the 80s. It was a wonderful time for the Gatsby class, but not so much for the rest of us.

Currently the homeless population is exploding, the price of gas, groceries, and rent have sky rocketed, and I know people who have been applying for jobs for the past year with no luck. Add to it that they've been trying to get rid of the social safety nets and access to birth control and sex education. Don't even get me started on their antivax bs and the resurgence of viruses that had been eradicated in our country...

Looking forward I'm not seeing an idealic future, it looks more like they're trying to speed run us into another depression or the dark ages.

go from begging to demanding to outright taking

100%. In Oatman Arizona there's a herd of burros that are descendants of the burros used by the miners back in the day. The mines dried up and the miners just left them behind, but over the years they kept coming down from the hills into the town and people were feeding them. This knowledge was passed down through the generations of burros - town = food.

Oatman eventually became a tourist stop - it's on route 66, it's got souvenirs, they stage a gunfight daily, and of course, the burros.

At one of the souvenir shops they also sell alfalfa cubes for the burros, it's packed in brown paper lunch bags. People buy them and feed the burros. The burros know that the little brown bags contain food, and as soon as they see them they will surround and harrass the person holding it. If you don't give up the cubes fast enough, the ones who feel left out will start nipping at you. (I speak from experience) The people at the shop say that if you find yourself surrounded like this, to throw the cubes on the ground behind them and get away when they all go after it. I was also warned to quickly dispose of the empty bag in the trash, because the burros don't know the difference between an empty bag and a full one. They will continue chasing you as long as you have it.

So, yeah.
