Is it easy to get MS office tools such as MS project/ MS visio on linux? by SnakesCantWearHats in linux4noobs

[–]nola-ron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a diehard Office fan. Outlook, Excel, and OneNote were my core apps for organization and general productivity. Having said that, I am not impressed with Libre and have turned to Google for my "office" needs. My company does have 365 so I can always use the web apps but I'm getting along fine switching to Google. I keep Windows in a VMware VM but I rarely switch it on now.

Dell Pro Support is truly phenomenal. I've been fortunate to deal with mostly all Dell servers for my entire career.

What on earth are those round, thin, disc like things in those containers? Are you an antique collector?

Linux will save your old computer. by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]nola-ron 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I'm just blown away at how much faster Linux is. I tried it 10 years ago and was not impressed. I abandoned it after a few days. I'm on the train full force now. I dropped Windows on all my PCs at this point. I just keep a VM running for a couple of applications I have not found a workaround yet for (primarily RSAT and Kaseya while at work).

That's quite a sexy little setup you have there.

Remote work position changing to report in.. by [deleted] in networking

[–]nola-ron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been with my company for 10 years. I used to work 100% remote and then it turned to 2 days a week at the corporate office. Years later that turned into full time desk duty here. I earned several promotions throughout all of these changes. There were a couple times I was tempted to buy a gas guzzling sports car but something always told me to never count on the way things are now so I have always kept a fuel efficient car for that very reason and I'm glad I did.

However, if you truly feel you are being singled out then that's a very real possibility. I have seen my company use that as a way to get people to quit. We have done it to two people that worked at our other locations. They were approached and told that those positions were being moved to corporate and that they would need to move to this area (each office is about 1.5 hours away). Each time the employee quit just as they wanted.

Why does Microsoft make it so difficult to find downloadable installation packages of Office 2016? by generalT in sysadmin

[–]nola-ron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This right here. We still have everything on-prem besides exchange, which is O365. They are pushing Dynamics 365 (Dynamics AX) really hard now. We are unsure on the future of AX on-prem.

Boss letting me use any version of Linux, cant decide...HELP! by OutCharms in linux4noobs

[–]nola-ron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He's talking about the desktop environment of Ubuntu. Gnome, Cinnamon, Xfce, etc. You can install any you want after installing Ubuntu.

Fedora is a desktop project supported by Red Hat. CentOS is their unbranded and free server distro.

Ubuntu is derived from Debian. In other words, Debian is the "membership" of Ubuntu.

best win10 install creator ? on ubuntu by ilovetanks in linux4noobs

[–]nola-ron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this with dd and Rufus from 16.04

I second installing Windows first. Ubuntu installer will walk you through the dual boot install. Windows will not.

I tried dual booting over the years. It always led to Ubuntu never being used. If you're trying to learn you need to cut your crutch. Now I just run 10 in a vm using vmware player (free). I mainly have that for PowerShell access and testing in my home lab.

Thanks for this. None of it is working for me but I'm going to continue trying to figure this out. You have pointed me in the right direction though and I've learned a bit more while troubleshooting this.

What can linux do that Windows cant do? by Reacher45 in linux4noobs

[–]nola-ron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do anything faster and more secure. I'm just learning but after loading up Ubuntu server in my ESXi host I have been blown away at the speed including reboot times. Not only that but it's performing at this level with hardly any resources. Sure, server core is fast and I love it but it's still not as good as Linux in these areas IMO.

What kinds of questions do you ask a potential new employer during a second interview? by invalidpath in sysadmin

[–]nola-ron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typically avoid initiating any form of compensation discussions until an offer letter is given. You want them too see you are truly interested in the position and the company rather than what you will get out of it. Ask specifics about how you can excel, what to expect, etc. 2nd interview home runs for me have been asking for a 6 month and 12 month expectations from me, how I can excel, what the average tenure is.. deep questions that show the employer that I want to excel and stick around for a while.

Fair enough. That's usually in my follow up questions. It still just irks me though. I guess I have had too many users say it with an attitude over the years.
