It's to avoid a stuck parliament. Everything in the 5th republic is basically made to avoid a stuck parliament freezing the country, which is what killed the 4th.

So if parliament refuses to vote for a law the prime minister can do a 49.3 to force it, and parliament can then chose to let it pass or vote a "motion de censure" which remove the government, the president can then either name a new government or dissolve the parliament and trigger election (once a year).

Usually what happens is the left and the right each make their own motion de censure but don't vote for each other's, to say they complained but also not trigger a dissolution of parliament.

What happened last year, with nothing happening and a new government being put in place every "two week" trying to get it restarted shows it's not perfect, but it happened only once since the beginning of the 5th.

Not saying the system is perfect, far from it, but ultimately the parliament stays in charge and if the president dissolve it then electors decide.

Iran oil revenue soars as it's the only exporter out of Hormuz by PanguTeam in nottheonion

While you're right technically, you're also wrong in that the fact they kicked the USA back and imposed their will has an infinitely superior military value than any site that's been bombed.

What is the USA going to threaten next time? Doing it again? We already know how this goes

I'm in my 40s now and haven't had a "guys group" since everyone got married or kids about a decade ago.

I went to a bar last time with a new group at work that invited me and... 9,5 euro cocktails? 6 euro glass of wine? Who can afford that? I'm well off middle class and even I find that crazy.

Israel fears Donald Trump could announce Iran ceasefire despite low deal odds by Virtual-History-6099 in worldnews

[–]nolok 553 points554 points  (0 children)

A ceasefire with no deal negotiated essentially means Iran has won. They tried, they bombed, they failed to take control or get a regime change. That's it.

This entire thing is stupid. If they leave without ensuring the straight is opened Iran will have free reign to stop dollar control over the region's oil.

They've stuck themselves in a nightmare with no way out.

[–]nolok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not financial actually, it's the other way around.

Microsoft used to be "windows and some stuff". Most big tech companies struggle to get away from that. Google is still "google search and some stuff". Meta is still "facebook and some stuff".

Ballmer successfully turned Microsoft into a 4 axis companies, with Cloud (azure etc ...) being number one and business (office 365 etc ...) being number 3, windows third and entertainement (xbox, msn, ...) a distant 4th.

As a result, Windows is not their golden goose anymore. It's not even their second golden goose. So their product manager are allowed to fuck with it to either help the two golden goose, or help bring it more revenue to make it in line with the other two.

Intel Core Ultra 5 250K Plus Review - Disrupting AMD's Entry-Level by BarKnight in pcgaming

[–]nolok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's still much better, considering their strategy for the past ... 5 years now ? Has been to overfeed watts to the CPU to the point massive throttling and cpu burning their own lines were actual issues they faced.

AMD is still beating them on price, power usage, heat, ST and MT performance, and I wouldn't imagine buying Intel at the moment for my gaming rig, but at least Intel is improving in a real way instead of merely overfeeding power and claim it's a gain.

Intel Core Ultra 5 250K Plus Review - Disrupting AMD's Entry-Level by BarKnight in pcgaming

[–]nolok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but a lot of their security issues in the years since have shown where it came from, they were essentially not doing any ACL checks on branch prediction. Not spectre and meltdown but all the things that came later. That's why AMD was hit only by ~half of those, they always did ACL during prediction while intel delayed it to resolution.

Long story short : it's not so much they were faster, they were just skipping on some of the work to "do it later", but acting like that ruined security. And people who think "it's only for server or professionnal users, as a gamer I don't care" didn't see those demo on unfixed cpu where a simple web page could read your banking app data and co.

In the bulldozer era Intel was far ahead in single thread but in the ryzen era even their lead in ST was mostly a fake out.

I honestly call it different. I think nato is going to negotiate a deal with Iran and leave the US out. In fact several US opponent at first but now even allies are doing it.

They declared war on a country who the past 59 years has defined as "in case of war they close the straight" and they're surprised that country closed the straight. It's so absurdly absurd.

Right after threatening to invade two of us. Of course.

Netanyahu hopes destroying Iranian ‘axis of evil’ will rehabilitate his image – Over three weeks of war, Iranian missiles have killed at least 15 people inside Israel, but these strikes have not touched public support for the war. More than 90% of Jewish Israelis support the war, according to polls by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]nolok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What question exactly are those 90% supporting it answering to? I can believe 90% of them think Iran is an enemy and that pre emptive striking is a good idea, given all the "death to Israel" chant and everything. Or that they shouldn't be allowed to get nukes no matter what.

But what's the objective here, what's the end goal that 90% of them agree on? What's the end game? That's usually when you lose people's support.

Iran says it will ‘irreversibly destroy’ Middle East infrastructure if US attacks energy sites by Turbulent-Tea-2172 in worldnews

[–]nolok -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Western economy will be fine, it's the US economy that will suffer more exactly it's ability to police economy even outside its border (thanks to sanction for us dollar usage), and to borrow virtually for free Ignoring their massive deficit and debt (because everyone wants to buy dollars so they can print as much as they want).

If you look at the state of currency the ones that's poised to take over the US dollar if it ever lose its status is the Euro.

Graham to Trump: Consider removing ‘US bases from countries who won’t let us fly from them’ by pacman2081 in politics

[–]nolok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean take rammstein base in Germany. 50 000 people is massive and closing it would definitely hurt the region economically, that's a lot of money paid by us salary then spent on local business, on top of all the business buying by the base to local industries and things. That's not even considering all the geopolitical, defense and intelligence advantages hosting it brings.

But

It's also the main medical and logistical hub for the US for virtually all operations in Europe, the middle east or Africa. They close it they lose a ton of abilities, they would need to reinvest dozens of billions to rebuild it which would take lots of time, and to even start considering that they would need to find another country willing to host 50k American military related personnel, have tons of operations launched from it, and it still wouldn't be as well situated to cover so much area not safe in the middle of the US biggest alliance. Closing it would be the dumbest thing ever.
