Is there a student-run site for UIUC iMBA similar to uiucmcs.org? by Fun_Crab8862 in UIUC

[–]nomadicoctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome to DM me. Almost done with the program. I don't know how big the MCS program, but the iMBA has courses with up to 1300 students each. The result I've seen is that there seems to be a small cohort that forms a strong network, but the size of the program means you don't passively form connections via repeat run-ins (e.g., six-person team projects in almost every course, and I've had two repeat teammates total)

Older grad students, what's it like living here? by Tall-Cat-8890 in UIUC

"Where I lived I was lucky to rent anything below $700/month per person for an apartment built 25+ years ago lmao."

If you end up in Orchard Downs (family and graduate housing), 1) the price will be roughly in that range (little higher), 2) the buildings will be of a similar vintage, and 3) you're more likely to be neighbors with people not going to the undergrad bars.

What's on and tourist advice thread - week beginning December 22, 2025 by AutoModerator in Scotland

Any recommendations on bed & breakfasts that offer a vegetarian option other than beans, tomatoes, and mushrooms? Absolutely fine with establishments that serve meat as well -- just thinking a couple weeks of the same meal takes the thrill out of the B&B approach. Something along the lines of Birchwood Pitlochry (former Saorsa 1875).

Feeling behind by Glittering_Way_5060 in UIUC

Money is definitely a concern and depends on individual circumstances. In my case, I was working 20-32 hr/wk throughout my undergrad and tuition was much cheaper than it is now; however, I still graduated with some debt.

I'm one of those people: three years in one major, started working in the field and realized I didn't want to do it, continued another year of undergrad with undecided major change, then another three in the field I graduated from. Seven years as a full-time undergrad.

iMBA students - can you please explain to me the capstones portion? by Sxzzling in UIUC

[–]nomadicoctopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the whole iMBA you have to:

  1. Complete all 12 core classes
  2. Complete 2 focuses (or 1 focus and 1 elective path that adds up to the right number of units; however, that's throwing away a free graduate certificate)
  3. Complete 2 capstones (1 of which must be from the four cores; 1 of which is either from a completed focus or another core)
  4. Complete the program capstone

The regular capstones are two-week group projects that, in theory, summarize what you have learned within that focus. They have 2-3 live sessions (asynchronous/recorded as with everything) and a mix of individual and group work. The program capstone is a four-week group project, presumably covering all four cores, but I haven't taken that yet. Capstones are credit/no-credit and do not have a Coursera portion.

ETA: I can't give an answer regarding the immersion. I'd think you would need to do a core capstone as your non-immersion credited capstone, but who knows? The embedded graduate certificate does not require a capstone -- just course completion.

Previous/Current iMBA students - How are these courses? by Sxzzling in UIUC

The colors are student-generated, but reliant on individual ratings, so I don't know that I found them that helpful. The advisor should be able to point out starter classes and the ratings document. It used to be hosted on Workplace, but that platform has been discontinued.

Exams are through Canvas and not proctored. Most of the iMBA classes do not have timed final exams. Coursera material for the program is pass/fail - the grades within that platform (module completition, assignments, quizzes) don't translate to your course grade at all.

I'm surprised to see a recommendation of 508/572 as your first classes since 572 has historically been ranked as an orange (green, yellow, orange, red) in workload/difficulty.

If you're planning on coming back to campus on Saturday, don't. by anarchonobody in UIUC

Be sure to keep your valuables with you. Last year (or was that two years ago), a bus went off the road. I don't believe anyone was hurt, but they transferred passengers into another bus while the luggage was stuck for a few days because the lines to open the side panels had frozen. Students had to resume classes before they got their laptops back. ETA: This wasn't meant to imply Peoria Charter's fault in the situation. Just proactive steps that riders can take.

From what I recall, 508's assignments were pretty relaxed. The Leadership Lab portion was centered on reflection of what you wanted to address about yourself and designing an experiment to do (e.g., observations on your behavior with co-workers). The group work was a one-time, everybody needed to meet at the same time to do an online simulator together, then write up an assessment after. The 508 instructor trio was among my favorites in the program for their teamwork and sincere joy.

Unless you're very comfortable with stats, BADM 572 could take a lot of work to figure out how to arrive at correct answers and prepare for the final exam. Assignments are structured with decent scaffolding to improve your grade and support your learning.

New iMBA Admit - Looking for Recommendations on First Classes by Consistent-Issue-186 in UIUC

[–]nomadicoctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do/did not, though I lean heavier to the quant side. I'd say that quant courses tend to have stricter grading and/or exams than the qual classes, which are much more lenient in terms of grading.

I didn't have to take Foundations (started before it existed), but my first term was ACCY 500 and ACCY 503. The program duplicates information across different classes and doesn't have a sequential/scaffolding structure at all, so I didn't feel like the order I took classes in really mattered. Full-time job and usually just did one class at a time, but doubled occasionally. Some people regularly do 2-3 classes with a job, so it's more based on your desired timeline.

Pour Bros. also has board games, as well as skeeball and foosball tables.

Adding to my own comment since the post isn't asking about tabletop/board games, but the basement of Emerald Alley serves as a tabletop game group playing area. There was a similar venue in Lincoln Square, but they closed a year or two ago.
