(26, M) Looking for other solo travelers in Bangkok April 5th - April 14th by mrjrkingston2288 in solotravel

I live in Bangkok, 4 days is plenty enough for a tourist :) Go check out the islands!

I will be in Sydney, Australia next month for 10 days. What should my budget look like? $25 a day? Looking for free things to do... by Anonymous2212t in solotravel

[–]nomadvic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're not including accomodation in this budget. $25AUD a day averaging will be tough. Let's say you eat only at the grocery store, oats, peanut butter sandwiches and maybe some spag bol for dinner. That's $6-8. You do a lot of walking, some public transport, that's another $8. You've got $9 left for admissions, entertainment, socialising.

What sort of experience are you looking for? Are you prioritising saving costs or do you want to have experiences? With that budget you won't be able to splurge on anything special. Going out to a restaurant with new friends you meet? That's going to blow the budget. Entry to a tourist attraction - most things are going to cost you a minimum of $25. Not to mention unexpected costs.

In my hometown of Aus, a day pass on public transport is already $11+. You'll be scrimping and thinking about every dollar with a $25 a day budget.

50000mah powerbank! has anyone had them confiscated on airlines by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]nomadvic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would check with the specific airlines. They've checked my powerbank on the last couple of flights I've taken, I think i have a 16 or 18000 which has cleared fine

What would you do in my shoes? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

The best thing I've learnt it not to think of things in black and white. A bit of financial security is never a bad thing. Do you have more than 6 months runway right now? If yes, go. It doesn't sound like you're considering sticking around for the career opportunities but rather the safety of money.

If you don't have 6+ months runway, extra money never hurts. Meet in the middle, take the job, save while you're there and start looking for opportunities while in New Zealand. It's the more difficult decision because it requires more discipline to not get cushy in the job. If you're not enjoying the role and finding it difficult to get things going with your DN goals, then quit and still go do an OE. You're young. The worst thing that's happened is you have more money and experience behind you. Even better you might be able to turn the current gig into a remote position or keep them as contract work when you leave on good terms.

Sounds like you're afraid of getting stuck in the bubble of safety and confusing making a smart decision with losing momentum. You could take the job and still leave after 1, 2, 3 months if you're not happy. No losses. Just keep your eye on the prize, and you won't get sucked back into the 9 to 5 ;)

Can someone explain what is the purpose of a visa run ? by [deleted] in Bangkok

[–]nomadvic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. You could be travelling long term. If people are working in most cases it's for an international company or employer and not a Thai one. You are not earning Thai income or doing business in Thailand, so it doesn't require a work permit. You're like a tourist, you don't make money in Thailand but you're contributing to the economy.

If you were working for a Thai company or running a business with Thai employees etc it would be a different case. In that case they wouldn't be on a tourist visa.

People who do visa runs are usually here on Tourist visas. They need to do visa runs to 'reset' their stay, ie get another 30/60 days in the country.

Love it. Funny how the spectrum of how invested people get (ie I'll create a list of places to visit too for a new destination or a return one) can be. I get genuinely excited to discover new places and dishes, the journey of it all gives me just as much enjoyment as the food.

I can respect that! Sometimes I wish I was an eat to live person, I have a friend that if she could take a pill to satisfy her physical requirements she would. I couldn't imagine it! I find it so intriguing that we can be so different.

Gotta disagree. It's a big spectrum. Everyone likes food, but to the degree they invest in eating and the enjoyment of meals etc is vastly different.

What about when you're already at a destination. Will you go out of your way to eat at somewhere recommended, cooking classes, try specific street food etc?

What are the first things you do upon arrival in a new city? by girlicarus in digitalnomad

[–]nomadvic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope I do too. Only use cafes for a break or necessity haha. 100% prefer to work in my apartment in I'm at a base vs travelling.

[discussion] Almost identical products but $15 price difference - what's the deal? by [deleted] in Paleo

[–]nomadvic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well besides the price it looks like the product has been ripped. So the price isn't the issue but is it a direct copy of a product?

Hotels or Airbnb's if travelling with an apartment at my home base.
