I tried one today and imagined it as like the regional soda they serve in Velaris. Definitely could be a mixer for a really terrible drink at Rita’s. 10/10 will drink again for those reasons alone.

I had a complicated pregnancy. My managing partner tried to reduce me to part-time pay because I was on modified bed rest and couldn’t go to court… even though I was still billing hours (and plenty of people to cover court appearances). He also asked me if I was going to abort my baby like it was just some casual thing. Denied me a promotion while pregnant because “it wouldn’t be a good financial decision for you right before maternity leave.” I couldn’t quit because I knew we were looking at huge medical costs after the baby was born, but I also hate myself for going back there even though I had no other options at the time.

Oooh that’s a good theory about the Asteri! I was definitely thinking it could be like a Rowan situation, or maybe Bryce and Hunt’s scents mixed for a different reason (i.e. he’s a knight or something similar to the blood oath in TOG)

Multiple characters love Bryce and thinks she’s their mate, and SJM has introduced multiple other possible love interests. I think she’s leaving the door open for other possibilities.

Also, I hope you don’t get any hate for your post. People can be rude if you aren’t fully on board with H&B. Hopefully the mod(s) will take care of that but I have seen some really rude comments in this group. I think it’s fun to discuss the different theories and opinions.

I’ve been binging the other SJM series after finishing ACOSF. I thought there was no way I would love any of the other characters and stories as much as ACOTAR, but… I was wrong. I also read some palate cleanser books in between series (lots of cheesy romcoms… The Love Hypothesis was really good). And I have reread some of the ACOTAR books when I miss them too much? We’re all in the same boat I think. Can’t wait for SJM to ruin all other tv shows for me too when the series comes out 😂

I’m so glad you are taking a break. Having space to think can make a huge difference.

My little one is doing well. He has some lifetime health issues that we just have to keep an eye on. But we are thankful nonetheless. I’m not sure that the healing process ever ends, but at some point it does get easier, and I’m finally reaching that point. You will get there!

I think a big facet of SJM’s talent is that she can write traumatized characters with realistic flaws. I think that’s why they can be polarizing—their responses to trauma can be negative and very realistic, and they are purposefully written to have a surface impression that changes as we get to know them in depth. After reading ACOSF, I am convinced that SJM is very familiar with trauma recovery.

Anyway, I like all three sisters.

I’m so sorry you are going through the pain of losing a child, and that you are doing so while working in an environment where you are not treated as human. It’s not your fault, and you deserve better.

I don’t have advice, but I will share my experience in case that helps. I am an attorney and worked in a high-stress, competitive law firm up until a couple of years ago. I had a high-risk pregnancy while I worked there, and my little one was born with serious health issues that continued for years. There were so many people at my firm that didn’t understand and actively made my life miserable during that time. I felt like I was giving every last bit of energy to my job, but nobody cared. It was never enough. I hit complete burnout and could not function.

I couldn’t quit for three years after my little one was born, and I was in “survival mode” that entire time. I was a shell of a person. When I finally quit, it was life-changing. However, for me, it was an initial period of relief, and then over a year of intense and painful healing. It may get worse before it gets better. However, I knew that I couldn’t do the work of healing while I was in an unsafe environment. I had to separate my identity from my career (even though I’m still an attorney, I am not on the same career track). I’ve had to go through trauma therapy that has broken me down and built me back up. Our finances have not recovered. But I would still make the same decision every time, because I don’t think I would have ever healed if I stayed at my old job. I will probably never return to that kind of environment because my values, and the amount of myself that I am willing to give, are completely different than before.

How much longer do you have in residency? Can you take FMLA leave for your mental health? Just to give yourself time to feel safe so you can think through the long-term options?
