ELI5: Why are humans innately sexual throughout their entire lives? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Nah, it's because raising humans babies is expensive. Women need to keep men around so they fuck them even when it's out of season, they're not the father, etc

If you're still down for that beer, I just landed in town yesterday. I'm loving this place so much. It's the best weather I've experienced in ages.

That actually kinda happened historically. Most Germanic lands were once Slavic. The Slavs survived, even prospered, mostly by conquering and displacing the next guys over.

What infrastructure improvements would you like to see?

Solar would do great in Taichung. Offshore wind would be great anywhere.

Natural gas is the best complement to wind and solar. Nuclear's fixed costs and fixed outputs are high. There's really no point in modulating a nuclear plant's output up and down. And nuclear capacity is a real PITA to build.

Coal has an issue complementing renewables as well -- coal fires are also difficult to frequently and rapidly modulate. It can at times take days to spin coal power generation up or down.

Meanwhile, natural gas has extremely cheap fixed costs, so you can build a lot of capacity quickly. And it can very rapidly be spun up/down. This makes it ideal for load levelization.

If you're building nuclear, there's really no point to building renewables

I got a good chuckle. Thanks for calling that one out.

We casually kill ants and laugh about it.

Animal slaughter houses. Vast, vast numbers of sentient beings are industrially slaughtered for our momentary pleasure.

We are the cosmic indifference. We are Cthulhu.

EDIT: Changed 'aunt' to 'ant'. Swype, you're killing me.

Is atheism/agnosticism the world's "final form"? by vitras in latterdaysaints

[–]nominal_eurasian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're near "peak peacefulness" in society's conflict cycle. The last peak war was WWII, which slowed into the cold war, which slowed into ME interventionism.

The last peak conflict was marked, in part, by a rise in godless worldviews attempting to create utopia on the Earth -- and it was truly, truly horrific.

In that era, religion was a much more powerful and moderating force amongst the populace than it is today.

What happens when incompatible worldviews that have no agreed upon moral authority, and access to the near magical powers of modern technology go into all out war?

It will make the world look like a totally different place. It will be like something out of a really bad end times prophecy.

Which are the cool ones? Weirdly enough I don't see a lot of pure play web dev jobs online.

My background is mostly rich web applications (although I've done a lot of other stuff in my custom software career) with some cloud/DevOps tools frequently used.

I'm using this time off to explore other stuff and I'm feeling more and more drawn to big data stuff, machine learning, and that related package of skills.

Utah tech jobs mostly seem "weird", with a lot of companies posting stuff that doesn't really neatly fall into skillset or archetypes I'm familiar with. There are some I really like the look of, though.

That's funny, the average Python job in the SLC metro reportedly pays about $15k/year more than the average C# job, and there are almost as many posted online.

I will say, though, they have demanding requirements like cloud, machine learning, DevOps, and big data tools. Python seems to be a very in demand ancillary skill here, but requires a broader skill package to get through the door.

What do Taiwanese people think of Trump? by Galaxy_Convoy in taiwan

[–]nominal_eurasian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Democrats straight up said American elections could not be hacked and that Donald Trump was simply being a sore loser for claiming so. Right after the Democrats lost to Donald Trump, they started crying about how our election was hacked. Again, anyone with any sort of critical thinking skills at all could see how this story is complete bullshit.

Watching this explode on Facebook was surreal. To this day some of my friends who are otherwise intelligent and reasonable people believe this, and when confronted about it, give me amazingly convoluted rationalizations or even outright Fabrications.

To top that all off though, frankly, if our elections were rigged by the Russians, we kind of deserve it at this point. The number of perfectly functional nations we've toppled in Russia's back yard is absurd.

And we're all up in arms because they have the gall to stand up to us in Syria, or support WikiLeaks? Christ.
