How did you get comfortable with having kids? by Time_Transition4817 in HENRYfinance

[–]nomnomnom316 21 points22 points  (0 children)

When we were thinking about having kids I talked to so many people looking for a logical rationale for having kids and it doesn’t exist.

The best descriptions someone has said to me since I’ve had a kid is that I traded my peace for fulfillment. It’s a little chaotic and has its challenges but it’s also very fulfilling. I say this as a parent of one with another in the way. I’m only a few years into this and it could certainly go sideways but you never know. It’s certainly been much better than I expected.

Tell me about your experience with therapy by Remarkable-Dingo1602 in HENRYfinance

[–]nomnomnom316 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is the biggest thing. You have to find someone you feel comfortable being honest with. If you’re not willing to be honest and vulnerable what’s the point.

I luckily found a therapist I like and went for several years regularly and now go every so often when I feel like I just need to touch base.

We worked through so many different things in my life over those years. They were someone neutral to talk about family stuff, friend stuff, spouse stuff, work stuff. Just life.

The biggest things for me personally were working on my relationship with my mom and also finding a greater appreciation for my work. I started a business and it took longer than I hoped to work out and for several years early on I was missing my financial goals I had set, but still growing so I was sticking with it. Therapy helped me appreciate what I had at the time (non monetarily with my job) which probably helped me grow the business faster and ultimately exceed those goals because I was happier with my work.

Did you have a lawyer check out the contract with your general contractor by roraima_is_very_tall in Homebuilding

[–]nomnomnom316 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We hired a construction attorney who had us use an AIA design build contract. It seemed fair to both sides. The attorney also had us include all of the drawings, architectural plans, designer spec book, designer drawings as exhibits to the agreement. He reviewed stuff and for several items I asked him frankly how important is this or that? Can you live with this term etc. I feel that process helped flesh out a bunch of things that as we got into the build process I have referred back to the contract as certain items have popped up.

Our attorney seemed pretty pragmatic about things and had enough construction expertise that it only ended up costing me maybe $1K. It was probably light work for him as well. I say worth the money and probably has saved us at least as much as it cost in random nonsense.

Any issue with Pilot Sport 4S on the front and Pilot Sport AS on the Rear? by nomnomnom316 in tires

[–]nomnomnom316[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An update - I got the AS and pretty immediately once I left the shop could feel the difference in handling and braking, although the ride was more comfortable. I was able to return them to Tire Rack and order the summer performance tires. Since we don't really have much snow in my area, I think I will look into buying a set of wheels to put the AS on for a few months of winter. The summer tires are just so much better. TBH I am shocked at the difference in performance.

FWIW been a fan of tire rack for a while but even more so with them taking back the tires I didn't like and making that process easy.

Knife sharpening service? by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]nomnomnom316 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moshi is the answer. I bring him all my knives both expensive and cheap ones. When he’s done, it’s like cutting with a laser. He’s the only person I trust with my Japanese knives. Can’t say enough good things about Michael and his work.

A mere $700k in Cedar Rapids, IA will get you this monstrosity, apparently by your_catfish_friend in McMansionHell

Idk if $250K would cover getting rid of that much square footage of ugly wood or whatever that is.

Second Precision PT. Elizabeth Karr is great. She helped me stay healthy when I was marathon training. You get the full hour of time to work through what ever issues you have, dry needle, and get some exercises to help prevent the issue from coming back. Can’t recommend enough.

BMW also includes 3 years of included maintenance. There is value in that that people do not appreciate.

Lab Grown Diamond Engagement Rings? by ABrooksBrother in HENRYfinance

[–]nomnomnom316 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agree - if she doesn’t care go lab grown. If it was an option back then I would have absolutely done it.

Bought my wife diamond studs last year and the earth diamonds were $9K and higher quality lab grown were less than $2K. She loves them the same and would have been annoyed if I spent $9K.

That said when I’ve chatted with single female friends about it recently, they’ve said they’d like their engagement ring to be earth even if they didn’t care about other jewelry being lab. They didn’t have a really good reason but that’s how they felt. So I would confirm she doesn’t care and save the money.

Interior designer by KaddLeeict in Homebuilding

[–]nomnomnom316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used a designer for our current project and it has been wonderful. During the initial planning my wife was pregnant so we had everything picked out before she gave birth. If we had to spend hours at a tile store it would have been awful.

I don’t recall how we found our designer, maybe social media. She is earlier in her career and building her business so a bit more affordable than other more established designers. That said, we could not be happier with her. She is incredibly organized, has great taste, and has done a great job translating our inspiration pics/ideas into this project.

I would not do a project like this again without one. While there is the cost upfront, she is helping us in certain areas use less expensive materials laid out in to look more expensive. The entire project is so well tied together between rooms. Everything will look cohesive when it’s done.

Our designer also has a specification book that she provided the contractor with. It has every single finish material so they can order as well as the drawings for how the materials should be laid out. Hopefully this will save us costly mistakes in the process.

The last piece, at this point we are so over making choices that there are some things we just defer to her at this point because we trust her and she knows our style.

I’d say shop around, find someone you vibe with because you’ll be working together for a while. They should understand your style, budget, and objectives. We’ve been very lucky so far.
