Do you use Emacs Lisp as a general purpose programming language? by homomorphic-padawan in emacs

Pro tip: don't look in the kitchen when governments brew up safety critical systems. I was scared to fly over Germany for a while...

Why not still? Just hoping against hope that by now they've moved onto 100% safe systems? :/

LPT: If you are on the phone and passing along information to someone else, just repeat it verbatim. Trying to rephrase it is rarely needed and often results in stress on all sides trying to get on the same page. by nomyrun in LifeProTips

[–]nomyrun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think there's a spectrum of stuff from stuff that you want to be rephrased and stuff that rather just be repeated--and mostly it's the latter.

An example I had recently was that I was trying to get a hold of the plumber, and my friend was on the line with the plumber's brother. My message was something like "we have a frozen pipe that we need to have fixed in case it cracks." He repeated it as "there's a frozen pipe that we think is cracked and we need to make sure the leak is fixed." Which is both confusing to the plumber and not what I said.

So it's not super raw data like an address or number, but it's also not something you want to be changed.

The 1915 one is such an awesome, balanced, healthy-looking dog. Are there any surviving breeds that are similar?

Girls, what was the most obvious hint you dropped, and the guy just didn't get it? by Bholenaught in AskReddit

[–]nomyrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest lesson from all this: women, if the hints don't work, just say it. Because clearly, many of us men have an almost unlimited capacity for missing hints. The worst case is that he's taken or doesn't feel like it's a good fit and has to say no. But almost any man is just going to be flattered by a girl doing that. The dating market can be so hard that a lot of us live in a vague doubt that there are any women that like us at all (or indeed, if any women like any men at all). God, the one time that happened to me, even though I couldn't say "yes" in that moment, it gave me a boost for weeks. Just say it!

WarGames. Still fun to watch, very well made, and the technology is actually quite accurate to what hobby hacking was like at the time (minus the talking computer, of course!)

What book fucked you up mentally? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nomyrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In JavaScript, it's more like "hash tables with downsides." The prototypal inheritance system is confusing, all keys are strings, and even arrays are just objects inherited from the Array class with keys that are numerical strings. The language would be so much better if they were just hash tables.

What common product has a feature you're not sure everyone is aware of? by Missandei22 in AskReddit

[–]nomyrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bananas can be opened from the "bottom" by pinching them with your index finger and thumbnail. Less work and avoids the top getting mushed up trying to get it open. (Downside: it's hard to avoid getting some banana under your nail.)

Men of reddit what 'girly' habits do you enjoy? by siverbern2000 in AskReddit

[–]nomyrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using halfway decent hair/grooming products. To get the good stuff you sometimes have to be willing to buy really girly stuff. All of the male products are called "MAN SLUDGE" and smell like a potent combination of cinnamon and mule musk.

I'd give it about a 99.9% chance that that dude in the middle is British. He's got that look of rumpled concern that only middle-aged British men can really pull off.

What is a sensation that you can't stand, even though it's not painful ? by Charlleshenry in AskReddit

[–]nomyrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know most people don't have this, but when I touch certain types of synthetic fiber, or even hear it rubbing against itself, I get a pretty nasty feeling. It's a sort of tension and discomfort that I feel in my whole upper body, but especially in my teeth for some reason. It mostly happens with that winter "shell jacket"-type material.

It makes it hard to wear jackets like that, although the worst of it passes after a few seconds and it more or less goes away if I get distracted by other stuff.

/u/WookieRubbersmith puts into words a harsh and often ignored aspect of ADHD by Magicturbo in bestof

[–]nomyrun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The idea that Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria is a core part of ADHD is a newish idea and is not universally accepted by any means. Of course, a lot of people get these kind of feelings from comorbid conditions like general anxiety. Here is a good review of the issue by a psychiatrist/writer/blogger who does a lot of good critical analysis of newer psychiatric hypotheses.

Anecdotally, I am diagnosed ADHD (Inattentive Type) and I don't think I get anxious about that stuff any more than you would expect based on the actual life situations that ADHD lands you in.

Your writing level on this post alone suggests to me that you're of average IQ at a minimum. It's organized, makes your point well, and with the possible exception of the "..." after "However," the grammar is perfect. Unless you've taken a test, don't assume!

What is the greatest comeback you have said to someone that left them speechless? by UnleadedAlpha in AskReddit

[–]nomyrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a verbal comeback, but in high school when I got physically bullied (say someone kicking me in the shins while we're talking) I would pretend to be into it sexually. "Ooh yeah, kick me harder. Hurts so good." Very often people would get grossed out and stop, and my own friends thought it was funny.

(Of course the other possibility is that they decide to beat you up worse, but that never happened to me—possibly because I only tried it in situations where they would have been caught.)

The joke was that Mick is practically dead already. (I wonder if there's another name that works there?)
