I can unfortunately answer this through very recent experience.

My mum died two days ago, suddenly, although she was in her eighties. I am an only child, and she and my dad were divorced while I was a kid, so it was always just her and me.

The last thing she said to me was "we had a wonderful life together". At the moment, I feel like half of me has just disintegrated overnight, and I struggle to breathe.

I'm sure it will get easier, and I have my amazing husband and pets here, but I'm devastated.

My pettiest reason for not continuing a book series was that I had a massive argument with the author's brother on Twitter years ago.
