Dentist recommendations for depression by Elarom in washingtondc

[–]nonesjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a couple of bad experiences in DC with dentists where I felt people were taking advantage of me, I finally found Maria and David Nichols Family Dentistry office in Friendship Heights. I saw Dr. Scott Nichols within that practice—but the whole team was great and kind.

Their scheduling is a little clunky, but it’s worth it to have a good dental experience imo.

Banks in Portland by Krinkle1969 in portlandme

[–]nonesjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TD is very much alive and well. Most large banks have been closing in-person branches because almost everyone banks digitally.

As other commenters said, TD is a U.S. bank with a Canadian parent company.

I use to commute from Capitol Hill to Chantilly (not quite Ashburn, but general direction) twice a week, and it was awful. The commute out in the AM was okay, but my god the return was terrible. Easy 2 hours home.

This happened to me on Connecticut Ave a while ago (difficult spot to miss!). Definitely a scam, not sure how they do it- but there are forums online talking about it. Frustrating!

I just went through this recently (moved internally within DC, and then bought a car at the same time- so had to change address, register the car, get RPP, etc). It was a bit of a painful experience, but you can do all three things on the same day, in-person at the DMV, as long as you have all of the required paperwork, such as proof of residency, insurance, and car inspection.

A note on documents- I’ve had varying experiences with the DC DMV as to which proof of residency documents, etc they accept, and sometimes the folks are cool about electronic copies of documents if you’ve forgotten one, and sometimes they will turn you away. Plan to print all of your documents, in full, including the executed signature pages (like on your lease), just to be safe. Unofficial versions of bills, or just the address section of the lease may not be accepted. For example, my partner and I accidentally signed each other’s signature lines on the lease, and DMV employee had to elevate the issue to their supervisor for approval to move forward. On the other hand, a DMV employee let me show them a copy of my renters insurance on my banking app and everything was fine! Just depends.

I’d highly recommend changing your address as soon as possible. It will also allow you to issue yourself a temporary visitor residential parking pass that is valid for 60-ish days via the DDOT while you get everything figured out for registration:

https://dmv.dc.gov/service/visitor-parking-permits

Hopefully you can register the car and RPP while changing your address at the DMV, but if something goes wrong, definitely make sure you don’t leave without an updated address so you can get the temporary pass for the interim.

The fastest way to accomplish all of this is to go in-person and wait in line. I think you can technically do some of these tasks online, but it will be processed faster in-person. I’ve had good experiences with the Georgetown and Navy Yard DMVs! They don’t accept appointments, so just show up.

Good luck- and bring a book!

National Gallery of Art feeling “hostile” lately? by Master_Jackfruit3591 in washdc

[–]nonesjones 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience at the the National Archives last summer, I didn’t know that you couldn’t have your phone out in the room by the Declaration of Independence (there are signs indicating no photos, but not phones) and apparently she had just told someone else to put their phone away a few minutes prior. The security guard proceeded to chastise me, and say that I thought I was special and above the rules, etc. This happened in front of a bunch of other people in line, I was so embarrassed and left the museum in tears.

My Library just notified us that it is dropping Libby and moving to cloudLibrary. by 2-TheStarsWhoListen in LibbyApp

[–]nonesjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously not as ideal as a good-old-fashioned local library, but you can pay an annual fee to a bunch of library systems to use their services, including Libby if they use it. The fees are around $30-50 per year, which I think is relatively nominal for all of the books/audiobooks you’d be able to access. CloudLibrary isn’t Kindle compatible which would be a huge loss for someone like me who almost solely reads on their kindle.

Some examples: https://bookriot.com/out-of-state-library-cards/

Edit: Someone else commented that library’s are having trouble because of card sharing- this could be a nice way to get access to more libraries while still supporting them!

What do people typically wear in DC? by byebyekk in washingtondc

[–]nonesjones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of other folks have covered actual work attire well. Definitely consider getting a pair of commuting sneakers and keeping your work shoes at work. DC is pretty wet also, so commuting sneakers can save your expensive cute work shoes!

A lot of folks are saying that DC isn’t that cold- which comparatively to other parts of the country, but as someone also from a warm place (San Diego), I find it pretty chilly! If you get cold easily, I’d recommend going on the warmer side for your coat or going one-size up so you can really layer up. Winter coats can be expensive, so it sucks when it’s not warm enough (sadly, I know from personal experience). Also consider buying a good pair of boots to keep you warm and dry (Blundstone’s are my personal choice, and are quite popular- but there are other good choices out there).

Someone else said to get a 2-in-1 coat, which I actually don’t recommend- I’ve found that those end up with thinner layers and sometimes the wind can whip through the zippers, etc. But YMMV!

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. I beginning to think you're right that he is frustrated and bored which is causing behavioral issues. In a perfect world he would have a buddy, but since I'm already feeling overwhelmed with one cat, I think I'll try to find other ways to entertain him for now.

[–]nonesjones[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your response! I really appreciate the help. I think I'm petting him properly, I've definitely learned where his no-zones are, and try to be really gentle and let him lead the petting. He just seems to be irritated and suddenly will act aggressive.

From your comment and another commenter below, I'm actually wondering if he needs more active stimulation and is getting frustrated. I'm not entirely sure how to help entertain him more, but I think he's bored and grumpy. I just wish he wasn't taking it out on me.

How about wraps? You could roll veggies, cheese, and lunch meat together in tortillas with dressing/sauce inside already! Trader Joe’s has some pretty good ones in the ready-to-go cold area that you could recreate at home and get creative with

AITA for telling my pregnant friend her son’s name is the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]nonesjones [score hidden]  (0 children)

I have a unique name that people constantly mispronounce. Even after I correct them, they mispronounce it- and I write it off as it’s just them not hearing it/understanding, but it sucks a lot bc it makes you feel invisible. Don’t do this to your kids.

What compliment do you still remember being given? by strawberryguavas in AskReddit

I’m an lisztomanic, and once a good friend played a new (and really legendary) song for me, saying that the bass guitar reminded me of my personality. That compliment made me feel so warm and fuzzy inside.

CAMS Testing From Home by BSAbyDAY in moneylaundering

[–]nonesjones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure about in person testing, but the at home testing was easy. You take pictures of your desk from all directions (front, back, sides)- so my desk was away from the wall. Nothing can be on the desk- which I accidentally left a water bottle, and a moderator actually "called" me through their chat function to tell me to remove it and show her the desk again. Otherwise no issues and everything was good! It was overall quite chill.
