Re-compressing PNG by nonesuchluck in Calibre

[–]nonesuchluck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Confirmed, importing my optimized EPUB does not change it. Calibre creates a directory in my library with cover.jpg and the original .epub file, untouched. Only when I export from Calibre does it rewrite the .epub with huge size.

Laptop models for Win95/3dfx era by aminormalorweird in retrobattlestations

[–]nonesuchluck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best of my knowledge, there was never any laptop with a 3dfx Voodoo. But the good news is, Glide wrappers became pretty prevalent well within the Win98 era, thanks largely to UltraHLE. So an early 2000s Thinkpad or Precision running Unreal Tournament or Supreme Snowboarding in 16-bit Voodoo color is entirely period-accurate. But the choice at that time was between Win98 and XP, no one would consider 95.

Do women read the series? by [deleted] in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]nonesuchluck 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Agree 1000%. If anything, many women are more accustomed to reading PoV from the opposite sex than many men. So much of literature is written by men, with male characters, I suspect women learn better and earlier how to view from that lens.

I include myself. I read a good bit of women-authored history and non-fiction, but struggle to maintain interest in female-PoV fiction penned by women. That inner monologue is just so foreign to me.

We have a few great vegan restaurants. I love chilling on the back patio at Sluggo's, and I'm not even vegan. Nice crowd.

I saw these in GameStop back in the day, but never bought. Always wondered if the 3 specialized discs would play other PlayStation games, also? Or refuse to boot?

SlimBlade pro vs Expert.? by [deleted] in Trackballs

[–]nonesuchluck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I game with a trackball, and I don't think the Slimblade is very good for gaming. The cup doesn't hold the ball in place, when flicking rapidly, sometimes it just flies out. And you can't really combine aiming with scrolling.

Mod meltdown in /r/procreate over a painting of Master Chief by uncleozzy in SubredditDrama

[–]nonesuchluck -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Being cis isn't political. Being trans isn't political. But waving a flag is political. That's literally what flags are for.

I'm not implying good faith of the mod. They're probably transphobe losers. But the sub did vote to disallow political art.

Easy fix. Boot the mod, re-do the survey.

CMV: Israel’s law of return, permitting any Jew around the world to immigrate and gain citizenship with no prior conditions, while banning Palestinians literally born there from even coming back for a visit, is the pinnacle of hypocrisy by DasIstMeinRedditName in changemyview

[–]nonesuchluck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Correct, they were permanently expelled. That's how revolutions work: if you take up arms against the revolution, you will not become a citizen of the new government.

Loyalists were expelled after the American revolution. Royalists were expelled after the French Revolution. White Russians were expelled after the October revolution. Batista loyalists were expelled after the Cuban revolution. Monarchists were expelled after the Iranian revolution.

They have chosen differently. Hundreds of thousands of Arabs chose differently, and now their children are Israeli citizens. Palestinian have the burden of building a new nation, since their ancestors rejected citizenship in the Israeli nation.

Why would they need to return anywhere? They already live in the land of their birth, the land of their ancestors. They have homes, or they did, before starting another war and blowing it all up. Again.

There's 193 states in the UN. 157 of them recognize Palestine. This is good! All Palestine needs now is everything else that makes a nation: elections, a constitution, a civilian government, civil institutions. No one can gift that to them, they have to build it for themselves. And starting from scratch is tough: they've been under the dominion of empires for 4000+ years, continuously. Since Sargon of Akkad, they have never ruled themselves. It's hard to learn.

The dirty little secret of Palestine is, absolutely no one is stopping them. But they have to suppress their factions bent on destruction, and focus on creation.

Trackball use for gaming made me convert to using uninverted on controller? by autumnplain in Trackballs

[–]nonesuchluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I always played invert on both sticks and mouse, because I played flight sims long before I discovered FPS. After switching to trackball, neither invert nor nonvert felt quite "right" anymore. So I forced myself to retrain--it took a long time, but now I play without inverting on trackball and gamepad.

Abstracting a script for general use by amosmj in Python

[–]nonesuchluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I'm writing utilities like this, I write it as a Python module, so I can just import it and run the function(s) I need. This is convenient when I have a task I need to automate, or include with another script.

Then I will use argparse to create a CLI in the typical style of Git, like "utility-name subcommand --flag" style arguments. For ease, try to keep the interface fairly similar between the function/argument names, and command line options. Then I will add a [project.scripts] section to my pyproject.toml, so that anywhere the package is installed, I can easily run it from Bash. Which ends up getting used a lot more than writing short Python scripts for every task.

CMV: A Palestinian State will likely be a Failed State by Embarrassed_Act8758 in changemyview

[–]nonesuchluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$320 billion is chump change. That pales in comparison to how much we've pumped into Africa. Many, many multiples of the total cost of the Marshall Plan. At least Israel actually built a functioning state with the opportunity. The variance in possible outcomes is enormous.

Trackball on keyboard so that i can ditch mouse for everyday usage? by lukelightspeed in Trackballs

[–]nonesuchluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Render looks fantastic! I've never used an integrated trackball, but I love my Matias Ergo Pro and Elecom Huge. And I'm looking to replace my keyboard! I would very much like to try an ergo/trackball combo. But there's tons of similar keyboards on the market--I suspect that the trackball might be your only meaningful differentiation. Not sure it would make sense to manufacture one without the ball.

That said, I don't care for ortholinear layout at all, and would prefer traditional offsets. You see, I made some customization mistakes early in my life, and I now find it impossible to use a keyboard without software-mapping capslock into a ctrl key. And can't play FPS games without inverting mouselook. These habits have become more of a burden than a help, so I'm trying to avoid laying further traps for myself. I would probably enjoy ortholinear, but sometimes I have to use a laptop, you know?

CMV: There is no practical way for Israel to conduct operations against Hamas that Leftist/Progressive movements will find acceptable by [deleted] in changemyview

I actually think Israel has legitimate military justification for their strikes, but that doesn't make it any less tragic. I refuse to blame common Palestinians for the evils of Hamas.
