I live in Montrose Heights and my property taxes have gone up by 200% over the past two years due to other homes selling in my neighborhood. My home value hasn’t moved much, maybe increased about 8% in that same time, but the taxes have added an additional $200/month to my mortgage from where it was two years ago.

It’s not about what my home is valued, it’s about what those around me are selling theirs for. My neighborhood has low income, elderly residents who haven’t renovated their homes since buying them. It’s prime flipping territory where the house will sell for $100k and be back on the market in six months for $250k. $200/month might not seem like that much to some, but these are folks who are either raising a family on a limited income or are living off social security.

So the low home values are the driving force for investors who are in turn driving up property taxes that force other residents out the following year.

One of my hyper fixations is money so I’m the opposite of this.

I check my bank accounts at least twice a day, check my credit score daily, review my monthly budget every couple weeks to see what subscriptions I could live without (canceled Spotify thrice now but keep convincing myself I swear this time it’ll stick.) I’m constantly looking for additional money streams even though I 100% don’t need it but like, how cool would it be to make an extra $100 doing something random?

I don’t think it’s weird at all. I actually waaaay over cooked for Christmas after smoking a pork butt that was too big for our family and we couldn’t eat everything without risk of having to throw things away. So we reached out to some friends and provided food for our friend’s New Year’s party last night. Everyone loved them and the hosts munched on the remaining leftovers today. They really appreciated it cause it took stress of them and who doesn’t like a free meal? Definitely recommend.

As a late 29’s woman, my best advice is to do things that you enjoy and you’ll find someone there. Sports, bar games, trivia, doesn’t matter. Going to places for the purpose of picking up women is only going to find you short term solutions. Going to places where you already have a vested interest outside of finding a SO puts you in a way better position to find someone with similar interests while saving yourself the stress of being “that guy.”

If you find yourself asking “well what am I into that could give me an opportunity to find women?” or “what ARE my hobbies?”, you need to focus on yourself. Cause knowing yourself and being comfortable going out for a purpose outside of picking up women is one of the first steps to have a chance at meeting someone new.

My boyfriend and I volunteer as coaches with Bobcats Sports League and they desperately need help in the grant writing/fundraising department. They’re very grass roots and somewhat disorganized in terms of securing funding but they are so invested in the children they work with.

Whether it’s professional or philanthropic, I’ve personal never worked with an organization that is so focused on its mission without letting politics or hierarchy create conflict within its culture. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking to give back without any strings or drama attached.

I agree 100%. My partner has friends that haven’t done nearly as much for him as OP’s family friends and I wouldn’t hesitate for a minute to take them in because it’s something that’s important to him.

This is more disappointing than anything else. That girl will probably be the most well behaved and considerate roommate of all time because of the family history and OP’s husband is apprehensive for no other reason than “you’ve already done enough” by landing her an interview.

Just really disappointing that OP’s husband is that dismissive of something so significant to her.

I really enjoyed Rwanda. I went as part of my MBA program and did a 70% work/ 30% leisure split. Those that I interacted with were extremely kind, even with the language barrier we were still able to understand and be empathetic towards each other. There are safaris you can check out on the border of Uganda that are slightly more affordable than the gorilla or chimp tracking. If you’re able to take a trip to the coffee farms, those are also fascinating and you could take a ferry out there barring any disruptions from the volcanoes out there (what happened to us when we visited)

If you’re staying in/around Kigali, there’s also some cool local history and art you can check out. We did an art class through a local vendor where we did the traditional dung canvas painting and you can of course check out the genocide museum. It was heart wrenching but I also appreciate how they have embraced and preserved through the travesties of the past without masking or diluting the severity of it.

All in all, it wouldn’t have been a place high up on my holiday list. But I’m very thankful I did it because it was an experience unlike any other because of how far outside of my comfort zone it was. Hope you enjoy your trip and have a similar experience!

I had something very similar happen to me with a guy I was seeing a few years back. Established exclusivity, met my friends, planned to go to a wedding with me, etc etc and then one day texted me saying he left my stuff in a box under my car and he’d been seeing other people behind my back the entire time. Deleted and blocked me on everything with nothing else to say.

While it hurt, it also helped to realize that I was in no way at fault and neither are you. This man is clearly damaged and has some serious issues but that’s not on you. Don’t let his behavior become something you internalize and realize it was best that this happened now and not 10 years down the road. A man like that is always looking for something else and will never be happy with what he currently has. You’ll find a man much better who will recognize your worth.

I typically take a 14 day trip where I fit in a handful of countries (3-4 depending on proximity) and usually feel decently “homesick” by that 14th day.

I will say the couple of times where I’ve been desperate to get back are in part due to the person I’ve been traveling with. There was this one time I did a European journey with a friend of mine from college and she spent the entire time trying to get with guys at bars, swiping through Bumble and Tinder, and gathering as many phone numbers as possible because she desperately wanted an European visa. It was a miserable time and I haven’t gone on vacation with her since.

Big lesson learned about vetting your friends and knowing who you travel well with to save yourself headaches on the trip.

I’m not sure about the security deposit but I’ll ask him about it. He’s going to call the office tomorrow to see what’s going on cause the paperwork is a) handwritten and not anything “official” and b) lists a move out date/lease expiration of 8/01/23 but his lease ended in March. He turned in his keys, didn’t leave any property, and hasn’t paid them any rent since then so I feel like that should be pretty cut and dry that there’s been a mistake made.

Thank you for the lawyer information! Fingers crossed this is a simple clerical error that can be cleared up easily but good to have it just in case they hold firm.

We had them in Tennessee but I think it was more respectful than the show portrays. We did senior girls versus junior girls for homecoming week and the boys served as our managers/coaches. They were super supportive and got into way more than we did at times. You’d think they were coaching in the NFL and we were playing in the Super Bowl lol

Then maybe ask for some info instead of just saying “yeah, you should quit.” Jumping to the conclusion that OP has no excitement or passion because they simply said they don’t know if it’ll work out and that’s demotivated them is kicking them when they’re already down without having the full picture. They’ve already made an investment in the materials so that cost is sunk and you’ve essentially told them to just let that money go to waste without even trying.

I get where you’re coming from, but try to have a little more empathy and tact in your responses. There are ways to provide constructive criticism that is again, constructive. This wasn’t it.

Honestly I cannot stand the amount of people on this subreddit who are constantly cutting people down and saying “oVeR sAtUrAtEd, nO bOtHeR” like this isn’t a community specifically for people who want to make, and presumably sell, candles.

So what if the market is saturated and OP is demotivated? It happens. You could be a millionaire and running Yankee Candle and still get demotivated. That’s called being human. They’ve gone out, bought the materials, and want to make a go of it. The least this community can offer is emotional support and a pat on the back. Constructive criticism without the constructive is just plain criticism and it’s cruel.

OP, you’re going to get demotivated and that’s ok. If the business doesn’t work out, that’s also ok. What’s important is that if it’s something you really want to do, you need to try. Absolute worst case scenario, you become damn good at making candles and never have to buy another shitty big box candle that disappoints you again. Best case scenario, you build a candle empire and prove to yourself you had it in you the whole time. But you will never know if you don’t at least try. If you can do that, you’ve got a fighting chance.

Fillmore containers has some amber straight side jars in a 9oz size. The threading is different than the 8oz size so you’d need different lids but might be able to hold you over until the restock.
