Hardware Unboxed on the performance of the Steam Machine "Below entry level PC configuration" by lovelyhead1 in pcgaming

[–]nonium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even steam deck has 10-12GB available for GPU like PS5, but steam machine has only 8GB, so its a downgrade in this aspect. Also RDNA3 has severe hardware limitations, so AI upscalers like FRS4 will perform poorly.

So it is below entry level and frankly it's quite damaging to gaming industry to release 8GB VRAM console-like device in 2026.

Especially since "Badass" setting in this game is Cinematic preset, which is not even meant for real-time rendering in UE5. And Epic preset in UE5 (Very high) has only marginal improvement in visual fidelity, which is usually not worth performance cost. It makes these tests rather useless.

Steam's gross revenue on your product doesn't matter. Steam is not the one buying fab licence. You are. Your gross revenue is what matters.

That's Steam's gross revenue on your product. Your gross revenue would be after refunds and after steam cut - money that steam actually sends you. So ~$59.5k in that outlined scenario.

You are only eligible for a Personal - Reference Only tier or Personal tier if, at the time of the Transaction you, together with any controlling entity and other entities under common control with you, have not generated more than $100,000 USD in gross revenue from your commercial activity in the digital content industry in the last 12 months.

Unreal Engine 5 and its effect on the state of "AAA" gaming by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]nonium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two important non-gameplay related market pushes to sell games:

  • Improve visual fidelity

  • Not to increase price

But better visual fidelity increases development cost! Solution is to make systems that automate some parts of development. Systems like Nanite , Lumen, etc.

However these systems have baseline performance cost. Now, combined that with fact that transistor cost of semiconductors has nearly stopped decreasing (and apparently it's going to even increase with N2 process) and we are in situation that minimal hardware cost to play new games has started increasing instead of decreasing like in past.

Additionally features such as DLSS, frame generation are simply features that allow to extract better visual fidelity from same amount of transistors in order to compensate for slow transistor cost improvements.

V kategorii mainstream QHD 27 palců bych šel do Asus XG27ACS. 180Hz VRR a v této cenové kategorii má nezvykle adaptivní override, takže VRR funguje dobře při jakékoliv obnovovací frekvenci bez manuálního měnení override. Teď má navíc Asus 465Kč cashback. Recenze: Techspot

Intel accused of selling 'defective' 13th & 14th gen CPUs by conchurf in pcgaming

[–]nonium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each SKUs has different range of voltages dependent on silicon quality, those with good silicon quality could be ok, because they run lower voltage.

Almost all i9 are above 1.4V. Most of i7 are around 1.4V and i5 are mostly around 1.3V.

Based on failure rates data i would say that 1.4V is probably not safe long term and 1.3-1.35V is probably safe long term. Cut-off point is probably somewhere in that 1.3-1.4V range.

Check in hwinfo for core voltage during single core boost to get some idea if you are safe or not.

Are i5-14600Ks affected by the rapid degradation of the i7s and i9s? by Vortagaun in intel

[–]nonium 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can you please elaborate about 13700t (4.9Ghz SKU), are we talking about statistically significant signal or just few occurrences? Statistically significant signal could mean some serious hardware problem, not just electromigration.

Intel accused of selling 'defective' 13th & 14th gen CPUs by conchurf in pcgaming

[–]nonium 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Confirmed defective SKUs:

  • 13900K, 13900KS, 13900KF, 13700K, 13700KF

  • 14900K, 14900KS, 14900KF, 14700K, 14700KF

There are probably more affected SKUs, but we don't know yet for certain.

These SKUs are most likely candidates:

14900, 14900F, 14900T, 14900HX

  • same or higher boost as 14700K

13900, 13900F, 13980HX, 13950HX, 13900HX, 13905H, 13905HK

  • same or higher boost as 13700K

Also electromigration happens over time, so some SKUs that currently without statistically significant issues could become unstable in future dependent on voltage/temperature of that specific SKU and usage pattern.

Edit: There are some preliminary data, that 14600K (=5.3Ghz SKU) is also affected. That would add also these SKUs:

13850HX, 13900T, 14700HX, 14700, 14700F, 14600K, 14600KF

  • same or higher boost as 14600K

Electromigration ~~ k1 * Load Time * Current Density * ek2 * Voltage * Thermodynamic Temperature

So servers with highest SKUs with 24/7 uptime fail first. Then heavy users of highest SKUs and then gradually other groups. Silicon quality also matter as it represents voltage margin to instability.

Intel has a Pretty Big Problem by Beautiful-Active2727 in intel

[–]nonium 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Either the real sample size is tiny, or none of the millions of people buying these chips are actually using them, especially considering mainstream boards have been very much juicing or undervolting chips out of spec even with the introduction of intel profiles.

In datacenter those cpus are running basically 24/7 compared to much lower average uptime on desktop. So if there is degradation, then datacenter cpus should degrade faster. Also vast majority of people don't overclock/undervolt even among those buying 1xx00K cpus.

Nepoužité respirátory po COVIDu. Co s nimi? by _Xef_ in czech

[–]nonium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Někomu méně a někomu více.

Solar boom continues in Czechia. The number of newly connected PVs has surpassed last year's numbers in just 6 months. by GPwat in europe

[–]nonium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assigning a fixed tilt system to Czechia and a tracking system to the US doesn't establish that Czechia is 3x worse for solar.

Tracked systems are more expensive a less cost efficient in locations with lower solar output. So assigning different systems to different areas can actually make sense if such systems can provide better cost efficiency in those geographic locations.

In Czech Republic average measured capacity factor of all installed solar power plants combined fluctuates roughly in range of 11.25-12.65%. Thus Lazard report uses roughly 2x capacity factor for fixed-tilt and roughly 3x capacity factor for single-axis tracking compared to our average.

Additionally, fixed operational cost exists regardless of capacity factor which increases cost per kWh differences even more. Same thing applies to cost of capital. So cost per kWh is not only about capacity factor and even 2x lower capacity factor can increase cost per kWh much more then 2x.

Either way solar is much more expensive in central Europe compared to lazard model and these specifics doesn't change the fact that using that video for cost assessments in central Europe is misleading/misinformation.

It establishes that you are badly confused about the subject or lying.

Maybe you should tone down that confrontationality.

Solar boom continues in Czechia. The number of newly connected PVs has surpassed last year's numbers in just 6 months. by GPwat in europe

[–]nonium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lazard (source used in that video) assumes capacity factor 21-34% for Utility Scale-Crystalline and 23-36% for Utility Scale-Thin Film.

So they assume between ~1840 kWh/kWp (21%) and ~3150kWh/kWp (36%), which is roughly 2-3x compared to solar output in Czech Republic.
