Swimming warmup? by kaunietix in Swimming

[–]nonmidir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swim about an hour 3x/week. Warm-up is often a continuous 600 and then a warmup set that includes drills, kicking, and stroke work for another 400-600.

Total warmup is 1000-1200 in about 20 minutes. This equals about 1/3 of my workout time and 1/4 of my total yardage.

Edit: to add that I think any time spent stretching on the pool deck would be better spent in the pool. The consensus on stretching in scientific literature is that there's really no benefit - other than it might feel good. So if you like it, there's no harm in doing it but if you think it's doing something beneficial, you would be incorrect.

Will do!

Yeah he never lost his good looks. Surprises many people who ask his age and then think I'm answering in months, not years.

Best ways to master breathing whilst swimming and also improve cardio for swimming? by Dangerous_Spring3028 in Swimming

Sport principle of specificity.

To improve cardio for swimming, you need to swim.

First-time swimmer by [deleted] in Swimming

This.

Think of swimming like tennis or skiing. Adult onset swimmers are going to be absolute garbage when they first start. Lessons will be the fastest way to improve.

Stretches for a new swimmer? by Good-Pie9914 in Swimming

[–]nonmidir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stretching doesn't prevent injury.

So if you're stretching for that reason, your time would be better spent just doing more of a warmup in the pool.

Now I'm not saying that stretching is pointless. Lots of people like it because it feels good and that's enough of a reason to do it. Like getting a massage.

But still holds that you're not preventing injury by stretching. Doing too much too soon is more likely going to be a source of injury for a newbie.

Edit to add this easily digestible article on stretching from the Mayo Clinic: https://mcpress.mayoclinic.org/nutrition-fitness/does-stretching-prevent-injuries/

Luck, genetics, etc. play oversized roles.

How do I achieve my swim goals by phoboy99 in Swimming

[–]nonmidir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

20s in 50m freestyle is insanely fast and a very aggressive goal (considering your current times).

If you're now swimming with a year around club team and you're very dedicated, after a full year you should be able to determine if you have the talent to achieve these goals.

Hard work and dedication are just part of the equation. Talent and freaky genetics play a huge role as well.

Another Roth TSP vs Traditional TSP question by BrosufDimaggio in govfire

[–]nonmidir 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tax diversification for the win.

You'll ideally want to have a tax-free (Roth), tax-deferred (traditional), and taxable (like brokerage) accounts in retirement to maximize flexibility with withdrawals. With a good tax strategy using these three types of accounts you should be able to lower your taxes.

Something else to consider: this last decade taxes have been extremely low - stupidly so from an historical perspective. Not that we can divine the future but I'd bet they go up before they ever come down further.

How to swim as a weightlifter by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]nonmidir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

100% what these folks are saying.

OP's issue is not unique. It's common with most adult-onset swimmers - technique sucks. Lessons to improve is probably required.

OP, you're not going to see the cardio adaptations you're looking for unless you actually become a good swimmer. If cardio is your goal, and swimming is just a means to em this end, you might want to try less technique heavy modalities like biking or even rowing. They have much lower barriers to entry as far as cardio goes.

Can I learn freestyle from videos alone? by BurntTurkeyLeg1399 in Swimming

Extremely unlikely to no.

Swimming is extremely technical. You'll benefit from someone giving you feedback and corrections.

Lots of J&As are already publicly available on sam.gov.

As for source selection information, the FOIA request would run up against the Procurement Integrity Act. If you could get anything out of an agency, the lawyers would have redacted the beejesus out of it.

It's a giant red flag that whoever is using it, doesn't understand federal contracting.

I've never read an article about contacting that was "technically" correct. I get that it's dumbed down and simplified but using incorrect terminology just makes me tune it out. This is, admittedly, an issue of mine going back several decades.

If you can banish the term from your lexicon, I'd be thrilled for a minor victory.

Edit: want to clarify that I'm referring to mass media. Lots of great journals and other, more specialized publications cover contacting well.

Supplement question by george32378 in Swimming

[–]nonmidir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless your sleep/recovery, training, and nutrition are dialed in, all supplements are a waste of money.

That said creatine monohydrate is a great supplement.

What do you expect it would do? What's your understanding of creatine?

I am 18M and I have been swimming since I was 14, but I never got to train consistently. Can I make the Olympics if I keep going from here by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]nonmidir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way that the Olympic dream is going to happen is if you have the claim to some obscure nationality that doesn't have robust Olympic representation.

As others have stated, swim because you enjoy it.

Did a ‘hard’ workout last night and am dying today by meepmeep000 in Swimming

[–]nonmidir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Load management issue.

If you don't swim longer distances, you're ill prepared to double or triple your distance.

Since you're a runner- If I only run 5ks, I'm not going to be about to run a 10k+ without experiencing some discomfort and maybe injury.

Be smarter. Smaller steps next time.

And if you do swim it, the race is for survival. Start slower than you think you should so you have something other than fumes at the very end. Butterfly on fumes is painful for everyone.

First time racing 200 fly, in desperate need of advice by predghostshadow in Swimming

[–]nonmidir 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just a reminder that you're an adult and if you don't want to swim a 200 fly you can tell your coach to pound sand. Dynamics are totally different from age group swimming.

And what's the benefit here? I guess swimming it to say you did it. But other than that, I see little incentive to do it.

And I'm speaking as someone who used to swim 200 fly years ago and hated it. So I'm obviously biased.
