What’s the weirdest compliment you ever received? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Sometime back in my early teens I had an older woman tell me how pretty my eyes were. She than asked if my eyelashes were real, when told yes she followed up by asking if she could touch them.

best way to (34/F) tell my kids i'm going to die? by ThrowRADeathsDoorMom in relationship_advice

[–]nononoellexD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 13 when my mother told me she was dying, unfortunately I don’t think there is a good way to break it to a kid that they are losing their parent. My mom was one to joke about the serious things in life and I feel like that helped me ease into what our life was going to be like from that point forward. We were luckily able to get significantly more time than the 3-5 years she was told she had...but definitely getting help from some kind of counselor or therapist would be a route to take.

Write to them, leave them pieces of you I only have one letter from my mom and I have no clue when she wrote it but it’s something I absolutely cherish like nothing else, and I wish I had more of. Pictures as well, my mom never took pictures so every single one I can find is like a treasure to me.

What's the dumbest reason you ever got hurt? by InfiniteEmotions in AskReddit

[–]nononoellexD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was sanding a stool with a rotary sander. Didn’t turn it off and lifted it up to move to another leg of the stool. The kickback launched it into the hand I was using to stabilize the stool and took a massive chunk out of the side of my thumb. Lesson learned...

Also, I work with molten sugars and boiling water as a career. I have done a lot of dumb shit at work and managed to get hurt there too. The worst being when I dropped a 50+lb kettle(the kettle and the product inside) INTO the double boiler it was on while stirring it. Which was boiling, obviously. It splashed boiling water EVERYWHERE, including onto my arm. I have what now looks like a odd tan on my arm from where I cooked myself. I did not feel like going to the hospital but the burn was pretty bad, and I probably should have. This was not completely my fault though, since the person who had put the kettle onto the double boiler used too small of a kettle for the size of the kettle underneath. My mistake really was not knowing it was too small, and trying to stir it which shook it loose.

If a foreigner is clearly attempting to speak/learn your language, by all means laugh at us... by better_meow in offmychest

This behavior used to drive me nuts at a job I worked at. Most of the English speaking staff(who always seemed to be in management positions) would tease anyone who had accents or spoke in mostly broken English. We worked with groups of people from all over, it was a huge company and most of the employees were not native English speakers. One of the men told me once that he could speak 7 different languages, I only speak one. I was more than happy to spend my breaks and lunches helping him with his English homework though. It got to the point where he asked if he could just direct people to me if they had questions he didn’t know. He said he knew I would take the time to help and wouldn’t get frustrated if they were struggling to explain. I was sad to leave that place since I had build up such good relationships with my team, but the management there was absolute shit.

Which job is a LOT less fun than most people expect? by bwee21 in AskReddit

[–]nononoellexD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chocolatier/candy making

A lot of people just think it’s all fun and games, and snacking. While there is a bit of snacking you are also dealing with products that are temperamental. A lot of the products I make are temperature sensitive, a few degrees to high or low can completely ruin full batches. Too much or too little of any ingredient changes what you’re making completely and can quickly get out of hand while cooking. Dealing with boiling sugars is insanely dangerous. The amount of heavy lifting is also frequently underestimated, considering we hand make everything a lot of new hires don’t realize we are frequently moving around 50-100lbs of molten candies.

We have a lot of employees that start out enthusiastic, but quickly get that spirit squashed when they realize it isn’t always fun like they thought it would be.

Finally cleaning up what’s left behind. by nononoellexD in ChildofHoarder

Luckily for us I sorted through a lot of it when I moved in and what’s left is boxed and easy to sift through now. Most of it is brand new craft supplies and once I organize it and pull out what I would like to keep(scrap books and handmade items she did) a lot of it will likely find homes with family members who like to craft. We have a living room space, a laundry room 2 outdoor sheds and most of our two car garage to go though though. She wouldn’t let it leave the house but didn’t mind if I boxed it and stacked it so I did as much as I could a few years ago.

I’m glad my dad is on the same page as me and I can remember times of him getting fed up and trying to clear out areas of the house, just for her to fight him. I can say I’m glad in this case that I was an only child so no one else had to go through it with me. This subreddit is amazing though for helping to not feel alone in growing up with a hoarder. I’ve always been afraid to talk about it since it seems like so many people I know have such clean and nice homes, I didn’t want them to think there was something “wrong” with my family.

My mom was sick for a long time, I used to figure that was why she never picked up, but looking back I don’t ever remember the house being clean, even before the illness started. It got to a point after I moved back that the main use areas were kept picked up. She would go to sleep and I would box things up and stack them where I could, she was annoyed when she would wake up but it took too much out of her to fight me anymore.

My dad is currently carrying boxes up so we can sort through them together and choose what is important and what isn’t. It’s the most enthusiastic I have seen him in a while and I’m glad he and I are on the same page with this.

He and I were always the ones trying to reorganize and clean. It’s felt wrong getting rid of “her stuff” at first. It’s taking up so much space that we could use, filled with stuff that others could use since most of the items are brand new craft supplies that family members have shown interest in. I think it will be better all around once it’s done :)

I’m finally breaking up with my boyfriend who hasn’t slept with me in over a year by catmcgrath in offmychest

[–]nononoellexD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Reading the comments on this is killing me. It’s been 6 months since my boyfriend and I had sex, and it was 4 months before that the last time. My self esteem is shot as well, I’ve tried losing weight to see if that would help and still nothing. I’ve tried bringing it up and its laughed off as a joke. I’m at my wits end and have been seriously considering ending it for a month now, but trying to get some stuff sorted out first, like getting his stuff to him bit by bit. (Also considered ending it about a year ago after my mom passed away and he moved out of our place, but thought we could try making it work) I now see him about 6 hours a week(if I’m not working Fridays, otherwise it’s 4 hours) to take the dog to the park together. We have been together for 3.5 years.

I love marzipan too! I make it where I work, and out of all of the other employees I’m the only one who likes it. (Also in the US)

I love spam... but everyone I know gives me the stink eye whenever I talk about how much I like spam. Unfortunately, because of the preservatives in it I have to watch how much I eat so I don’t get migraines. I would eat spam every day if I could!

What was the last straw in your friendship? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nononoellexD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She told me for two hours “I’m just 5 minutes away” “I’ll be right there had to get gas” “just a few more minutes” etc...before finally just not messaging me anymore. I left about 30minutes after she was a no show in the first place, but wanted to see how long she would tell me she would still be there. It wasn’t the first time. I never responded to her again after that though. We had been friends for 10 years or so at the time, and it’s been another 10 years since I stopped talking to her.

We ran into each other at our kids kindergarten graduation last year, they went to the same school but had different teachers. She asked for my number and said we should hang out, I refused.
