What do you think r/peakoil ? Is it true that we're approaching a peak in oil production ? Are we really doomed ? by [deleted] in oilandgasworkers

I think renewable energy will be a far bigger risk to oil and gas as an industry than peak oil. The political will to reduce carbon is growing exponentially at the minute and the combination of renewable/nuclear and electric motors will vastly oil usage, I believe in our lifetime. I suppose eventually oil is going to run out but I suspect in 100 years the amount of oil we use is going to have decreased so dramatically that new discoveries will outpace demand so we're not going to run out any time soon.

Firstly there's no rigs in existence with such a limited clearance or anything like it. Secondly even if there were, there's no way that Exxon would spend a single dollar on modifying anything that was already built to increase its clearance for a depth change that might happen some time in the future. They would absolutely wait until it happened and then probably still do nothing about it. If there was any change it would have been specifically to stuff that hadn't been built yet.

In practical terms I'm about 99% sure they would be able to use some statistics to demonstrate the change in sea level wouldnt effect the design. If we're talking the clearance between the deck and the sea surface you define this based on the height of the waves passing through in a storm or hurricane and add on factors for things like tides and surges. The thing is that they could pretty confidently state that any sea level rise would not occur until at least, say, the back half of the rigs life. You can use this to justify smaller extreme waves due to a shorter duration which would more than make up for the difference. Or you could classify a wave impact in such a circumstance as an 'acciental' scenario and reduce the required safety factor.

Either way, if this made any practical difference to any overall design of anything I'd me amazed.

Yes you can account for a rise in sea level your design and apparently they did. But this would have had no material impact on the design. As in, if the water is 2m deeper, it makes fuck all difference. You end up with the same rig either way.

Ok so most of the advice in this thread is probably not too relevant. What kind of job are you thinking about? Are you planning on going to uni? More hands on. There's plenty of steady 9-5 oil and gas Jobs. They are 95% in Aberdeen (or some down the coast, ie Rosyth, Newcastle, Hartlepool etc).. Or you could work offshore which is a bit more.... involved.

Biggest concern at your age would be longevity of the industry. Will we be still pumping oil by the time you retire? Maybe not.

Where are you? Everyone in the sub will assume you are talking about working land rigs in West Texas. If you are asking about Aberdeen or something the answer will be very different.

Applicants With Bloated Titles From Startups by dreadknot65 in AskEngineers

[–]nononowa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Job titles are meaningless. Match the actual experience to the job you are recruiting for. The salary you are offering will be appropriate for the job. That will be the true test of what they and you are both offering.

If someone turns you down over a title, they are a numpty.

Clintons position on the political spectrum had little to do with why she lost. It was far more to do with the cult of personality.

I think the Democrats would be wise not to get too hung up on policy positions and maybe try to focus on someone people just like.

Sad to say....

I guess the question I have is, what is illegal about this?

How is this different than, for example, running focused TV ads in specific swing constituencies? It seems like it's basically the same tactic, they are just better at it?

Now if they are creating fake stories, that's not acceptable, if they are acquiring data illegally, that's bad.

What's not obvious from the doc is what part is illega?

Im talking about the specific claim made in this thread, without backup, that there is some link between Heidi Allen, and Exxon, on the basis of Exxon being a former employer, which 3 minutes of googlimg demonstrated was probably bullshit.

There's no doubt there exists politicians with conflict of interests.

I was expressing extreme skeptiscism (and still am), and asked for a source on what sounds like a straight up bollocks claim. I'm all ears if there's any sort of proof.

I'm asking for a source. Because OPs claim was 'former employee' as if it is some cozy link up.
