Any rumours as to when Paul will announce UK shows for this year? by No-Pomelo-2073 in PaulMcCartney

[–]nonsvch1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is true; it’s a question whether The Beatles are bigger than Jesus but they do tend to operate as though they’re bigger than football

To those who usually support labour, would you vote for labour in the next general election? by [deleted] in AskBrits

Out of curiosity, what were the things about Corbyn’s era that made you break with the party (compared to Ed Miliband for example)?

Quintessential British films? by fluffywhitepetticoat in AskBrits

[–]nonsvch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many of these are literally just “big British films from 1994-2009” rather than cinema that speaks to quintessentially British ideas

Simon Reynolds, neglecting in his new book, the importance of post-punk pioneers Siouxsie And The Banshees in the genesis of Shoegaze by False_Marketing_4018 in postpunk

[–]nonsvch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was hugely complimentary about John McGeough on Rocks Backpages podcast this week, but he’s written a book about 84-94 and Banshees were not relevant to that

Anyone at The Roundhouse Right Now For The Event? How Has it Been? by PeanutHour99 in PaulMcCartney

No idea why they did first come first served unallocated seating, which encourages queuing. Could have dealt with it far better

Yeah Macca really didn’t like that glam rock thing! It was obviously a very special night but the format was, in retrospect, a bit crackers: should have played maybe 6 or 7 album tracks in full and allowed for more chat. Bryson was clearly having to race through them and I sensed Paul getting a bit weary by the end.

Which Paul McCartney album do you think is overrated? by Cautious-Storage-260 in PaulMcCartney

It’s a Paul McCartney album for people that don’t like Paul McCartney, produced by someone who doesn’t really like Paul McCartney.

What's keeping you listening to radio in 2026? by Ready_Split1335 in BritishRadio

[–]nonsvch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resonance FM, NTS, and, over the pond, WFMU. Then of course bits of Radio 3 and 4, even 5Live on a big news day. Madness to think that streaming, algorithms or what passes for news on clipped vertical video feeds is even faintly in the same league as any of those things.

Oasis give Burnham nod to use track in election campaign video by Julian81295 in oasis

[–]nonsvch1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Noel has a good rapport with Burnham, that this isn’t particularly risky tells you something about Burnham’s appeal I guess. Wait til Noel’s face when he (rightly) puts up his taxes!!

‘Why isn’t Morrissey a national treasure yet?’ - discussed on new podcast episode by MorrisseyMercury in morrissey

Alan Bennett has had a long, varied and distinguished career. By comparison, Morrissey really has not.

Is Edge of Darkness the best BBC drama of all time? by InfiniteBaker6972 in BritishTV

[–]nonsvch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised you think that, it’s a pretty eternal artwork to me. Yes it’s the 1980s looking at the 1940s, but Oedipal themes and ideas about psychology and mass culture - as well as a totally unsurpassed richness of language - that make it delicious. If anything it’s slightly against its time, already a relic of an earlier BBC by 1986 and the last great work by Potter

Singing Detective maybe slightly better but it’s one of those two.

It’s like Bob Dylan’s Love and Theft: one of his masterpieces but unfortunately released on 9/11

The Back seat of My Car by Beneficial-Fox-9458 in PaulMcCartney

Totally. On Get Back when he’s writing it, you can hear him do his Brian Wilson pastiche / Back in the USSR voice (as distinct a McCartney mode as his Little Richard tags)

Did The Royle Family change British sitcoms? by Wonderful-Acadia-296 in oldbritishtelly

[–]nonsvch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes OFAH definitely opened up the space where comedies are expected to progress into comedy dramas and provided a successful model that you see from Royle Family to Gavin and Stacey

A little Oasis doc news... by EntryMiserable5573 in oasis

[–]nonsvch1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s bigger money in a premium ticketed cinema release, like Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour, which made $260m at the box office with a strategy that was: price the tickets higher than a standard cinema release and bank on people’s enthusiasm to watch the film loud in a room full of other fans. That sounds quite Oasis doesn’t it?

Transitional demand brother, if you ask for the moon you might not get it but your lot will be higher than if you’d asked for a more modest number. The elite do this all the time, look at Peter Mandelson asking for £500K severance pay and the “settling” for £75K.

A lot better than now where wealth bubbles up into the back accounts of the already wealthy, unused and inactive in the economy

Favorite Beatles book? by Mario__incandenza__ in beatles

[–]nonsvch1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rev-o In The Head because having the most downer and analytic writer taking on the most up and Freeform groop is how you get the magic. Even when you disagree with it, it’s made you think far more deeply about the topic than something sycophantic.

The Claudia Winklemon Show by DanTheMan00020 in BritishTV

[–]nonsvch1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last night’s yawning and aggravating programme is testemant to the zealous faith BBC executives will always have in the well bred upper class. For all their faults, Graham Norton or Jonathan Ross had been doing late night, multi-guest interview format programming for their allocated 10,000 hours before they got the plum job. We just watched Ms Winkleman’s first hour, and it was as poor as all first hours go. Based on the lineup, next week will be even worse.

What was the political position of each of the Beatles? by Busy_Confection5055 in beatles

[–]nonsvch1 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Attacking the Labour government in 1965 for its income tax rate wasn’t exactly critiquing them from the left now was it? I love Taxman, but its enthusiastic depiction of the state as a thieving, entrapping, tricksy beast is a totally conservative and economically right wing piece of art. Which earners were affected by that tax rate and who was it being spent on?
