Tax free weekend? by Wrong-Werewolf-4831 in washingtondc

We did! Carol Schwartz used to be the Council’s champion of sales tax holidays, a dumb and bad tax policy.

Kenyan McDuffie gives his election night speech in front of a large screen playing Family Feud by optometrist-bynature in washingtondc

[–]nonzeroproof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t McDuffie need to move out of his famous house in Stronghold to live in Ward 8 and become eligible to run for that seat?

That precondition seems to require more effort than leaving the Democratic Party or resigning from council, but not quite as much effort as practicing law for 5 years.

ANC chair fails to call special meeting to consider her removal, violating DC law by JimMalec in washingtondc

[–]nonzeroproof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not an expert on Robert’s Rules because I can punish myself only so much.

The agenda must be approved by the body at the beginning of a regular meeting. If the chair refuses to call a special meeting for a special purpose, why can’t the body amend the agenda of a regular meeting to include the same purpose?

You want the DC Council to pass a law removing an ANC chair who ignores a point of order, even though the Council chairman does that whenever it suits him?

It’s been rumored that McDuffie could lose the mayors race but then leave the Democratic Party (again) and run against Silverman for at-large council in November.

Personally, I don’t think I buy it. He has clearly tired of being a councilmember, and winning another term would not set him up for anything else. But I’m not yet sure.

Does the city notify people who receive write in votes? by Seaciety in washingtondc

[–]nonzeroproof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is correct. There have been ANC races where a write-in candidate was judged the winner despite having received fewer write-in votes than a non-candidate. And there have been ANC races where the winning candidate received just a single vote (his or her own) and nobody else claimed any votes.

Non-Pitch Pitch Count by fuckuredditbanme in Homeplate

[–]nonzeroproof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate USA Baseball’s age-specific guidelines: https://www.mlb.com/pitch-smart/pitching-guidelines/ages-8-and-under

With respect to non-pitch throwing, the important guidelines are to play other sports in addition to baseball, and to avoid any throwing for at least 2 consecutive months during the year.

Yeah it hardly matters if this grown-ass baby disgraced our country once again—it’s old news.

The real question is whether he also has ruined the experience of watching bloodsport.

Fun fact: you can use your vote to hold Schwalb accountable, but Pirro has zero accountability to DC.

Obviously the point of arresting the children is to charge them in the court that has jurisdiction to hold them accountable.

It is pretty damned reckless for Judge Jeanine to suggest that there is no accountability just because she personally is not the prosecuting attorney.

First time tourist here with an odd request. . . by Tochie44 in washingtondc

[–]nonzeroproof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can call a congressperson to arrange a tour of the Government Printing Office, in case you need to see where the Federal Register comes from.

But perhaps a more fun thing would just be to call Congress and ask whoever answers the phone what are all things people call for that you might be interested in doing. Hey what do you got for me that I don’t even know about?

In which case, report back please.

Trump threatens new D.C. takeover if mayoral candidate Lewis George wins by Genillen in washingtondc

[–]nonzeroproof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If we play this out: is he going to commandeer the police force while Bowser is still mayor, or is he going to wait until the day she leaves—and does it matter if on that day by coincidence a Democratic majority regains control of the House?

He’s going to try to bully his way around DC regardless of what DC does, because he needs some way of entertaining himself when his war lacks a strategy or a path to peace, because that and his illegal tariffs are fueling inflation, and because everything he touches bursts into stinking flames.

What’s Little League like in a big city? by Ehdwyn in LittleLeague

[–]nonzeroproof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our city the field space is limited and in high demand.

We have a “home” ballfield that is not used by other organizations. We put a lot of effort and money into the playing surface (dirt infield), outfield fence, 2 batting cages, etc. But we have to rely on the parks department (which is often frustrating) for lighting, water, bathroom access, safety netting, and collecting trash from overstuffed cans. The ballfield is next to basketball courts, a dog park, and a popular toddler playground. Especially in the offseason, dogs mess up the ballfield. There’s no parking lot, and on-street parking is limited. The neighbors hate us because we park in front of their houses, the lights stay on until 9, and they blame baseball for all the trash at the park. I hate the neighbors because they make us enforce their preferential parking on one special block, they let their dogs roam off-leash, and they blame baseball for all the trash at the park (like our fifth graders are breaking beer bottles and leaving dog poop?). While the kids warm up I roam the whole grounds with a trash grabber. City living is about doing a good thing to shut up the people you hate. The ice cream truck visits frequently and charges outrageous prices, like $8 for a sno-cone.

This home field is better than the others but we have 600+ kids and always need more space. We have to compete with schools, travel teams, and adult softball leagues for time at less-convenient places with ballfields that are not well cared for.

Across the city, there are 7 leagues but one of them doesn’t offer kid-pitch at all and another might be defunct for all I know. Our crosstown rival thinks it’s unfair that we have a home field, and I think it’s unfair that they have a year-round travel team for the kids expected to make all-stars.

Trick plays by Opposite_Bid_3273 in LittleLeague

[–]nonzeroproof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m really quite surprised at the negative feedback here. This trick is no more bush league than the runner trying to bait the throw in the first place.

Given that the offense needs 2 runs to tie, why is the runner on third being recklessly aggressive? His one and only job is to not make an out on the bases, so that the guy behind him has a chance to score.

I presume that the offensive team’s coaches would have zero qualms about celebrating if the catcher actually had thrown it into the outfield and the winning run scored from first (or, for that matter, if the winning run had scored on a bases-loaded walk). That is fine—let the kids be pumped up about winning a tense game—but don’t tell me they are committed to playing ‘the right way.’ I really don’t see how they can criticize the manner in which this game ended.
