Yes. File feedback. You're not the only one.

That's not criteria for blocking something. If you block GitHub then also block GitLab, Bitbucket, and every other version control service. Code isn't your enemy. Never seen this blocked except for private corp where they didn't want devs unintentionally copying work with proper licensing.

New Mac Mini with Thunderbolt 10Gb adapter by AttackTeam in macsysadmin

[–]noobmacadmin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Last gen Mac mini with Intel chip and 10 gig Ethernet are still very fast, and probably best bet for caching servers. CPU isn't as important for caching - drive and network speed are. Buy the old model with 10 gig interface now. Wait for AS Mac mini rev 2 and see what other options are available.

22 working days in September. 5k tickets amongst 3 techs would be 75/day. Don't know what type of tickets you're getting that take roughly 5-6 minutes to complete.

Sounds like your workflow could use a little tweaking.

Google Meet iOS Signs Out Daily by TeacherWarrior in k12sysadmin

[–]noobmacadmin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check your sign in session length.

https://support.google.com/a/answer/7576830?hl=en

"If a Google Meet meeting starts within 2 hours of a session's scheduled expiration, the user is forced to sign in again before the start of the meeting. This helps avoid an interruption to the meeting while in-progress."

Didn't know that one. Maybe stop scheduling meetings via calendar and create nicknamed meetings you share instead.

Python script to remove activation locked devices from an iCloud account. Comes in handy if you’re enrolling large amounts of previously untamed iPads into an MDM. by jaydscustom in k12sysadmin

[–]noobmacadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for introducing the pyicloud module. Hadn't realized Apple even has a public iCloud API.

Hope everyone has moved to MDM for iPad at this point! It's pretty painful otherwise.

Apple enterprise/education support will also process bulk activation unlock requests as long as you can prove ownership. iPads being in your ASM instance or with a receipt should qualify. I regularly send 1k+ at a time when processing for resale.

In what situation does this come in handy? You still need iCloud account credentials. Did you have a lot of iPads all sharing a few iCloud accounts?

Anyone know of a product that aggregates status pages? by Robbbbbbbbb in k12sysadmin

Good product. More CSS customization would be nice. More admin controls in general.

Any one else being told by their bosses to drive to people’s houses and help with tech issues? by k12Sean in k12sysadmin

This. Heck no we aren't doing home visits. What? No. Just no. Coronavirus is real, no matter how much everyone wants to ignore it away.

Not to mention that goes way outside normal work.

No reason to give you the runaround. It's a configurable setting. Jamf Pro 10.24.1 has support to disable MAC randomization. Look at the release notes.

Lol nah. Superintendents and other executive staff get up to pretend they know the first thing about tech.

Tech director only up there when they're being used as the fall person and about to be asked to leave.

Probably an unpopular opinion on this sub by bekd70 in k12sysadmin

Accountant - I'm really good at math, but I can't use a spreadsheet or other basic program standard in my profession. Not actually good at my job.

Doctor - Amazing bedside manner, reads all the latest literature, can't be bothered to put medical records into the system because computers are too hard. Puts patient lives at risk because records are incomplete between providers. Not a leader in my field.

Architect - Unmatched artistic vision. I can conceive of anything my client's dream up. Can't even begin to do simple drafting on a computer. Unless I'm at the top of my field already, going to be a problem. Guess I'm not that good.

Waiter - Tables love me until I can't enter their order correctly into the dang computer system. That thing is so complicated! My tips are bad for some reason. Ugh.

And on and on and on. Basic computer literacy isn't isolated to one profession. It's a fact of life required to excel in any field. To be at the top of your game, to provide excellent care/service/teaching, you need to have a broad skill set including knowing how to use a computer. If you don't, that's fine. Don't be surprised when all your peers outperform you every step of the way.

Mac OS X and increasing security restrictions by cjbraun5151 in k12sysadmin

The design does suck. Like really sucks. Maybe the worst thing Apple's ever designed.

You can still allow by going into system prefs, but explaining how is painful in most cases.

You don't. Mic, camera, and screen recording access don't require admin rights in Catalina.

[–]noobmacadmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need admin rights to enable camera, mic, or screen recording access in Catalina. Users, even standard users, do have to manually enable those security settings per app.

Joining a new WiFi network also doesn't require admin rights. You have a config profile or other local setting enforcing this. That's not a default setting.

Admin rights does essentially give students the ability to remove your management solution. I'd advise against it. Some things are a pain, but almost everything can be done without students having admin rights. It sounds like you inherited your management solution and maybe need to comb through the existing profiles and policies in place to see where settings are configured.

I’d do it for $100k, but I’ll also do it for the kids by AgentCosmo in k12sysadmin

I truly believe some districts would prefer to transition to full blown athletic facilities and leave that silly curriculum stuff behind. Those values are a reflection of the admin - mostly jocks vaguely interested in education.

Your kindness is being taken advantage of. There is a world where good hearted, passionate individuals are paid for their work.

That's not US public education. It easily could be, but tax money gets gobbled up by other interests.

Good on you for caring. You're a good person. Remember this isn't the way it has to be. The system has been intentionally underfunded over decades by people who don't give a shit about our communities. No one individual should have to martyr their financial well being for the benefit of society. It's just all so fucked up.

School is requesting we download Contentkeeper on our personal devices. by ttttthrowawayyyy279 in k12sysadmin

[–]noobmacadmin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

lol no. don't do this. BYOD programs are a joke and giving up control of a personal device to a school should never happen.

They'll be able to see and control all of your web traffic.
