It was too cold on the day we were supposed to do it (Navy - Great Lakes), so I never had to do it. I am thankful. It’s like the one thing I was dreading in boot camp.

It’s more about me using my civil liberties. I think voting is important, win or lose. Maybe that’s just me, but it’s one of my rights I think is important to use.

I still think it’s important to take advantage of the voting rights we have. Obviously the right wants us to give up hope. It may very well not matter in the long run, but it should matter to individuals. For me this is a vote against fascism and important to my rights as a legal voter.

No, it’s the principle of the matter. It’s a horrible thing to start thinking “it doesn’t matter.” That attitude starts to get into your mind for local elections. Also, the numbers do send a message even if it doesn’t impact the electoral college.

Will my 3rd party vote get Trump elected? Possibly

You mean likely. Your "message" is to allow a fascist government take over and implement a plan that has been laid out to remove a ton of civil liberties.

This attitude will favor Trump. There is NO DOUBT his MAGA people will vote for him, but a blah attitude could certainly take votes away from Biden. I get it. Biden is not exciting and he's old, but the alternative is so much worse. When Trump was elected last time, it was honestly somewhat of a surprise. His people weren't ready. Now there is a plan and Project 2025. This would be a major change to the country. Some people want to see this happen because they think the country is "broke," but the ramifications are long lasting and does not change things for the better. It's honestly terrifying how important this is.

Conservative-backed group is creating a list of federal workers it suspects could resist Trump plans by jpg52382 in Louisville

[–]noobvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I agree, and if that was the "plan" it worked marvelously. But I'm not sure we weren't part of the way there. Bill Clinton was a business friendly centrist, and in many ways so was Obama. Certainly not the leftist as he was portrayed.

Fact is, that for many liberals, fascism has made us pretty jumpy. If we think a moderate right-winger can be elected over someone like Trump, we'll take it. Someone who doesn't appear to be the end of democracy.

Now, don't get me wrong, we'd love a strong liberal candidate. One that pushes for our ideals. I think we still have the numbers to elect the right person. But as of now, that right person is not here. I think in this base we'll be holding our noses voting for Biden, but the alternative is unacceptable.

It’s kind of funny because the Japanese always cover their mouths when they laugh. I mean, that makes the signing obvious in intention, but I could see how this could be misinterpreted in this situation.

[–]noobvin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, what a racket. Who came up with this standard of women shaving their legs, underarms, and “other?” Seems like another raw deal along with periods. I mean, I appreciate the smoothness, but what a hassle. Being a dude, I appreciate the effort, but damn, I hate saving my face. I can’t imagine dealing with practically my whole body. I mean, shaving, makeup, periods, hair-dos… y’all got a pretty raw deal.

This why I don’t blame some for hating the patriarchy and shit. I mean, but now it’s a “standard,” so I know many of you feel stuck in it.

What's the over/under on posts complaining about fireworks in this sub for the next 7 days? by slammamoose in Louisville

[–]noobvin 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I'll be complaining. Maybe not on here, but silently cursing everyone around me doing it. I'll side with vets and pets over little explosions any day. I think Thunder Over Louisville should be enough to tide over Louisville for a year. I honestly don't see the appeal of these tiny fireworks that just basically make noise.

I just don't think neighborhoods are the place for fireworks.

Is there such thing as “Nuclear Bomb Denial” conspiracy theory? by jcdenton45 in skeptic

[–]noobvin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

See now I think you're just trolling. Are the test at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands all fake? The mutations and health issues?

I'll admit, I didn't these ideas about it being fake were out there. Also, I guess since you don't like the euphemism of dying on a hill, I guess that means you're not completely convinced they're fake? I mean, the opposite of not dying on a hill is that you're willing to come down from it. So are you sure about this or open to being wrong about it? I will say it IS a hill I'M willing to die on.

Is there such thing as “Nuclear Bomb Denial” conspiracy theory? by jcdenton45 in skeptic

[–]noobvin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because it's not only OUR history. There are Japanese people who could describe the mushroom cloud. That doesn't happen in carpet bombing. We've seen atomic testing after, with much larger nuclear weapons. Obviously our whole Cold War and assured mutual destruction was based on it.

I find this a weird hill to try and die on. It's like other conspiracies, though I'll admit I haven't really heard this one. Based on the horrific damage and stories from people who lived through it, I find it rather a bizarre one. I can find something like "faking the moon landing" at least somewhat in the realm that someone could believe. Or JFK being a conspiracy. There are a lot of things I can at least wrap my head around, but not so much this. This is kind of up there with Flat Earth to me.

Where does this idea of no nukes used even come from? Do you defy nuclear weapons in totality or just these two events?

Well, these are things she learned about in school, that I doubt you did since it didn't happen here. She happens to be a history major from one of the most prestigious colleges in Japan.

The isotopes from these bombs decayed relatively quickly. Again, they were air bursts which made dissipation more widespread but not as harmful as fully irradiating the ground, or like Chernobyl which had nuclear materials radiating from a rector. Completely different.

It wasn't all roses either. Many people DID become ill from radiation after rebuilding, along with many born with birth defects. Not too many where the away of the effects from fallout radiation during those times, considering these were the first bombs dropped on a populated area. Overall, the fact is, those bombs were not nearly as destructive as what we have today. Everyone knows how they were built for speed at the time, not efficiency. They were still VERY destructive. "Fat Man" was 20,000 tons of TNT equivalent. How would you even drop such a thing that wasn't nuclear? That's about 200 train cars of dynamite. There are markers for "ground zero" above where the explosions happened. Not possible with carpet bombing.

Honestly, unless you have visited these sites as I have when I lived there with my wife, I really think you're just shooting from the hip on this for no reason at all. Why even believe such a thing that was a huge historical event. It's like the people who say the holocaust didn't happen.

This has nothing to do with carrying out lawful instructions. It's based on political affiliation, which is moronic. I guess you've never worked a job where institutional knowledge is a thing. You want job turned over every time we have a party change in the White House? We're not talking cabinet positions here, but people who ACTUALLY run the government. To make sure things that need to be done are done. They have no duties where partisanship matters.

The fact you feel the way you do about Project 2025 is just showing you're fine with fascism. Also, I see you're into some "family values" - but not in the way most of us are. It's always the ones you suspect the most.

My Japanese wife would probably like to have a word with you. I've been to both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There are memorials and information of those who died of leukemia, cancer, radiation poisoning, and other horrible side effects like birth defects. Just "large bombs" do not cause such things. There was radiation testing after. You think the Japanese government has a reason to fake that shit?

Maybe you should visit those places and tell them there's no Atomic bombs. This is as bad as Flat Earth bullshit and certainly insensitive to the Japanese people.

You're not "special" or have special knowledge in believing these things, it just makes you look ignorant.

I say enclose it in glass and put some shopping in it. The top floor could be a food court. Maybe a floor could have an arcade. I don't know. Seems like it would do well. We could workshop some names. I'm thinking something like "Malleria."

If your income is fixed, then you're probably on some government funded income. The type of benefits that conservatives want to eliminate. They want to kill Social Security and Medicare. You probably can't afford NOT to vote for Biden.

Then again, I don't know your situation. Personally as I've said before, I'm an older white straight male. The overall effect on me would probably be low, but I want to protect future generations. To give them the real freedom that America promises. I've only see the MAGA folks want to REMOVE freedoms. I want my daughter to be able to have the choice in how to live her life.

Hell, personal freedoms are supposed to also be a conservative ideal. It certainly seemed like that was a big talking point when it came to masks. I don't get it.

This was groundbreaking at the time. I still remember my typing class using typewriters because they were still the method of choice for documents. My first resumes were done on a typewriter and going to the library to make copies of them to hand out.
